There are many pieces of art that adorn the Last Chance Gulch area in downtown Helena. While the Bullwhacker statue does not really stand out among the installations in the area, it is a suitable testament to the early settlers of Helena. Ox carts were used to conduct a good deal of commerce with outside cities, especially during the gold rush times and it is nice to see that the role of a bullwhacker is acknowledged. It is aptly noted on the statue that "Driven by noise, the oxen responded to the crack of the whip over their heads and the constant curses of the bullwhacker." There are benches on either side of the status to take photos with the statue in the background.

This statue honors the contribution made by hard working laborer’s who built this city. Without the contribution made by teamsters and other common men and women, Helena would never have survived after the gold ran out.

While we were walking we saw a statue named : The Bull Whacker. It is a statue with a bullwhacker. It is a part of the past.

This started during Helena's Gold Rush days.

The oxen reacted to the crack of the whip above their heads and curses as well.

It is a reminder from the past.

Worthwhile to see!

This statue was very interesting because it honored, not a man of wealth or politics, but everyday men who served the city of Helena. Bullwhackers were men who accompanied wagon trains that delivered food and supplies to the city of Helena. It was their job to walk along and crack whips in order to keep the oxen moving along . Very impressive with the long whip trailing off high into the air. Sculpted by John B. Weaver. Located in the Last Chance Gulch.

Sculpted by John B.Weaver, this statue depicts the men who walked alongside the teams of oxen, cracking their whips to keep the animals moving in order to deliver goods to Helena that could not be made locally. One might consider them the 19th century equivalent of the modern day truck driver. It "is a distinctive memorial to one of the common and ordinary people who made the city of Helena possible."
