We did an overnight stay in the Wall Tents as a family in July 2020, during the height of COVID-19. First, the positives. The views from the ranch and during the rides are incredible, the staff was extremely nice, the dinner was great, and the horses and dogs are friendly. You can get very close to the horses, and enjoy most any part of the ranch. Unfortunately, there were also some significant negatives. The staff that you interact with is all teens or college students there for the summer, and they aren't formally trained in hospitality. The Wall tents have no heat, though they do have full electric service. The night we stayed the temperature dropped into the low 40s F / 5.5 C, and we were very cold. When we checked in at around 4 the temperature was in the upper 70s, and the tent was hot, but by 2AM we were all freezing, including my young kids. It would be a simple fix for them to add a space heater.

Secondly, and this may be specific to 2020, but the team did not practice any COVID-19 safety precautions. The dinner was served buffet style, with all guests filing through a shared indoor space, and using the same utensils to serve themselves. We had called and asked about bathrooms ahead of time to understand the cleaning procedures, and were led to believe that we would have a dedicated bathroom for our family/tent. Unfortunately, that bathroom was directly outside the eating area, and we found that all of the families there for dinner were using it. We had to wipe down the entire thing ourselves with bleach wipes after everyone had left. None of the staff were wearing masks or practicing social distancing. While the local staff is likely not a threat from COVID, the guests were driving in from all over (based on the license plates in the parking lot), and the ranch could do significantly better on this front.

Three of us did their trip by horseback up to Knox Lake to fish. It was a great ride through a quiet and very green forest to the high lake. Our wrangler did a great job of getting us there and back. The fishing in the lake was quite fun with lots of Brook Trout of various sizes as indicated in the guide books. The smoke from fires was a bit annoying but that’s Mother Nature. It may have made the fishing better although it seems it’s very good any time.

If you are considering this trip be aware of a few things. As clearly indicated on their web site the wrangler will get you to the lake and back, and will have bag lunches and plenty of liquids along. He is not a fishing guide and in our case not a fisherman. Also note the trail is rough, narrow and with snags and some trees down across it. It’s not an easy ride on the body and you need to pay attention to what’s coming up and is along the trail. Also be aware you are on your own when you get to the lake. Our wrangler napped for most of the four hours we were there. So keep track of others in your party. There really aren’t any cliffs or very dangerous places around the lake but don’t expect the wrangler to baby sit you.

All in all a great trip through some beautiful country to a quiet lake with great fishing where we were the only ones there all day. And our rear ends are recovering.

This was an amazing experience, BEST MENORIES of our trip!!! My two kids (6 and 10 years old) absolutely loved it!! I was shocked how quickly my 6 year old learned to navigate horse.
The cowboys/guides were very professional, they really look after your safety and especially that of small children riders.
After this experience I’ve realized how much I love horses!!

This was one of my favorite excursions on our trip. We booked through Flying Pig Adventure Company and this was the ranch that facilitated our horseback riding adventure. We initially booked the 2 hours ride, but some of us chickened out and changed us to the 1 hour ride (we were all novices). It was absolutely wonderful. I was nervous about how independent we were on the horses and I wasn't sure if I had received enough "training." In actuality, the horse "know what they are doing!" Our guides Charlie and Matt were fantastic in keeping us and the horses all on track and talking us through any "hick-ups." The views were breathtaking! I am ready for the 2 hour next time! It's a bumpy car ride getting there, but so worth it.

I'm not sure why this is rated so high. Maybe I'm just not a horse person, but a 45 minute ride would have been plenty if you just want to ride a horse. We were traveling with five of us that did the 2 hour trail ride. These are the things that were wrong - they had at least 20-25 horses with riders and a trail guide at the front and one at the back. Because there were so many riders, the pace was gruelingly slow on a very warm day. There was no commentary from the guides at all. It would have been bearable if they had less riders/horses and we stopped for commentary about the history of the area, the wildlife, some interesting stories, etc. Also, while the scenery was beautiful, the large loop we did offered the same scenery through the whole ride. If you want to go horseback riding, go with an outfitter that does smaller groups and actually provides commentary. They do have these type shorter rides out of Gardiner with other outfitters because our lodging proprieter told us after we got back to our lodging. Out of our group of five, everyone said this was the worse thing we did on our 9 day trip, and one of the persons use to regularly ride horses. We did a 2 hour horseback ride a few years back in Zion NP that was excellent with 8 persons and 2 guides and we stopped for commentary. Do not waste your time with this outfitter.

Fantastic experience! We booked a cowboy cookout with a one hour horse trail ride. The scenery was absolutely amazing and the staff was knowledgeable, friendly and professional. My family and I enjoyed everything from the moment we arrived until we left. We also loved the four dogs that were roaming around. The dinner was excellent and the chat around the fire pit was very charming (loved the songs performed by our host and wranglers).
Thank you for a great time!

Oh my gosh- this is a must do if you are staying in Gardiner. We (2 adults, 2 kids ages 5&8) went and did the paddle saddle express this morning. Our guides at the Ranch (Graham and Aiden) were awesome. Graham led the expedition and held a lead rope to my sons horse the whole time. Amazing. Then we went for the rafting portion. Mike was our guide. He was super fun and knowledgeable. We had a blast. I would def do again if we come back- highly recommended from someone who normally doesn’t write a lot of reviews! Everyone at Flying pig and Hells a Roaring was super nice and helpful. They even had a couple of cute and friendly pups my kids loved petted on (they are missing ours in this trip!).

We did the half day ride and then dinner at the ranch, and it was STUNNING. Roland and Peter were fun, laid-back guides that showed us a great time. The weather was comfortable even in mid-July, which was great, but there are mosquitos, so wear bug spray. If you book the multiple hour vs. one hour dinner ride, you will end up killing about an hour on the ranch between rides, which is fine because the ranch is gorgeous and fun to explore!

We had a DELICIOUS steak dinner with a variety of homemade sides and desserts that were possibly the best meal of our trip. We wish we would have slotted more time to explore the town of Gardiner, since it seemed really cute as well and is just outside the north entrance to Yellowstone. The road to get up to the ranch isn't for the faint of heart, but it certainly adds to the adventure of a great afternoon excursion we won't soon forget!

Staying at Hell's A-Roarin' was the experience of a lifetime and one I will never forget. Our reason for visiting was to experience the ranch, I have been following on Facebook, for quite some time. People may not know this, but the ranch owner, Warren Johnson, holds a massive fundraiser and horse drive each Memorial Day weekend in Gardiner and Jardine. All of the net proceeds go to purchasing Action Trackchairs for those with disabilities to reclaim their freedom, independence, and mobility in the outdoors. During our visit, we got to meet the man, the myth, and the legend himself and to hear about, "Hannibal" the grizzly bear, that he has followed and admired for over 22 years. Stories like that, coming from one of the most respected Cowboys of our era, really bring you home to the Old West. Additionally, the views were breathtaking, the BBQ was delicious, his team of employees were amazing, and listening to the sounds of nature all night will never be forgotten. Happy trails.

What a wonderful way to see the mountains! The views were amazing and we came upon an elk while we were riding. The horses were well-behaved. I was impressed by how efficient the crew was when we arrived. We had minimal wait time and they had us on the horses and riding in no time. I’d highly recommend the 1/2 day trip (about 2.5 hours) if you want a nice way to view a lot of mountains. Our guide was very friendly. Overall great experience!
