Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

OMG! This trail ride through the mountains and streams was absolutely amazing!! I can’t love this ride enough!! Our group of 8 rode for an hour through the most beautiful mountain landscape and we didn’t want it to end. Horses had the best temperament. Prices were very reasonable and we are so grateful that our big group was able to go experience this ride with Specimen Creek! It was the highlight of our trip! Go ride with them!!

Just went riding with my two daughters who are 13 & 16 years old. The horses were incredibly confident and assuring in their ability to travel the trail sure footed. We do have some riding experience, but not in the mountains. It was extremely peaceful, serene and enjoyable. It did not feel commercialized, but family-oriented and cozy. Would absolutely recommend Specimen Creek for your horseback ride.

Two friends and I enjoyed a 2-hour ride in mid-June 2022. We were led by JR and he was awesome. One of our riders was a complete novice and he felt comfortable in no time at all. The horses were great. In shape. Well-cared for. The scenery was beautiful. We will be recommending Specimen Creek Outfitters to anyone who asks for a great place to ride in the mountains.

We took several trail rides while in MT and WY, and our 4-hour ride with Specimen Creek was far and away the best experience. Ralph & his crew took their time getting us comfortable with the horses; the ride was spectacular and we really enjoyed talking with Ralph about the area and what we saw along the way. Felt like spending an afternoon with a friend, rather than the rushed, large-group feel of some other outfitters. Cannot recommend highly enough!

We went to Specimen Creek Outfitters to give our 6.5 yr old daughter her first riding experience. Spoke to them on the phone to ask some questions & make the reservation. We were staying in Gardiner, so getting to their ranch was easy.
Once there, the guides took care of everything, and were especially nice with our daughter. She was hesistant at first, but by the end, she loved it.
The actual ride was an out-and-back. We were going fairly slowly, for my daughter's benefit, so we didn't go out that far, distance-wise, before turning back. But for this ride, that wasn't the point. We weren't looking for an exhilarating ride, just to let my daughter try something new. To that end, our ride was perfect. If you're experienced, I imagine they would tailor the route to go on more advanced trails or go faster.
Note that as of our visit at the end June 2024, other places I had checked out had a minimum age of 7+ to ride, apparently related to insurance policies.

This was our 5th horseback riding experience around YNP, and this was one of the most beautiful trail. Expect driving 5 miles up on the mountain on a gravel road to get to Specimen Creek Outfitters. Drive itself was so thrilling for us, but the owner said this is one of better roads. Everything went smoothly and we made another great memory! Thanks Ralph!

My 2 kids and I arrived 15 minutes early for our scheduled ride, no one was there. I'd confirmed this ride multiple times before the day of. I tried to email and call and text all of the numbers I had. Awhile later, someone called back and when I explained, I was told that someone had go be there. No one was there. There wasn't a note or anything. They called back and said the ride before us was late, and they were on the trail and an hour behind. We decided to wait an hour. We waited over an hour and a half, no one ever came. I finally left with 2 very disappointed kids. We wasted over 3 hours, including drive time. Do yourself a favor and book with another outfitter so you don't end up wasting hours of your trip waiting around on a mountain alone to never get to ride.

We rearranged our vacation in order to go on a full day ride with this outfit. When we arrived no one acknowledged us. The people working were complaining about how busy and over booked they were. When we finally sought out help they denied having us on the books. Told us the ride had left and that they had no more horses.
We are totally disgusted and disappointed.

Not only did we book this trip by email and phone conversation over a month ago we called early this morning to confirm our reservation. They told our hotel manager that they were expecting us and had our lunch ready.

I WOULD NOT recommend this outfit. HONESTY is most important in doing business. EVERYONE makes mistakes.
One star is generous in the rating if this outfit.
And their horses looked very tired.
Thumbs down for specimen creek

Hi Kathleen, We here at Specimen Creek Outfitters sincerely apologize for the way you were treated. This was an honest miscommunication between our staff. Lloyd left for the backcountry and did not receive your confirmation message in time. We take full responsibility for the way your reservation was handled, and we are sorry we could not accommodate you. Our business has been around for decades, and we pride ourselves in being honest, doing right by people, and showing them a good time on horseback. It saddens us that this is not the experience you received. We appreciate your feedback, and we will take this into account in the future so this does not happen again. I assure you this was a rare occurrence. I would like to add that our horses are our coworkers and we do our very best to make sure they are treated well. They often sleep at the hitch rail before they go out on a ride, so they likely looked tired because they were half asleep in the morning. This is common behavior for horses everywhere. Lloyd is writing you an email and hopes to catch you with a phone call later to sort this out. If you are ever in the area again, we would love for you to give us a second chance and come on up for a ride free of charge. Best wishes, Becca

Great 4-day Back Country trip! My husband and I were not experienced riders (ar all!) but with the patience of our guides, Ralph Johnson, Chance Hall and Ralph's trusty companion and highly protective dog, Cotton, we learned quickly and enjoyed every minute. It was a real wild life adventure with beautiful scenery. We highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for high mountain horseback riding adventure.

We did the two-hour trail ride as part of a paddle and saddle package with river rafting. The rafting was really fun but the trail ride with Specimen Creek was truly an exceptional experience. The trail offered stunning views of wildflowers, valleys, Mammoth hot springs, meadows, pines and deer. The horses were easy to ride and plodding along in the quiet serenity and beauty was the best.

Ralph and his staff were so kind and friendly, making everyone feel right at home. They took our pictures in a beautiful meadow, with our own devices/cameras, unlike the rafting company who used a professional photographer and wanted $25 for just one picture.

Ralph has lived in Jardine his whole life and said, "why would I go anywhere else?" This epitomizes the down-home, genuine feel of the business. This is not a contrived, wild-west cowboy setting, which can be fun sometimes, but use Specimen Creek Outfitters; you won't regret it.
