Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Don't miss this if you're in the area. So unusual and uncurated. The house holds so much history and extraordinary artefacts. An homage to woman collectors and designers

There are three reasons to make a detour to visit the Abbaye de Chaalis. The first is the very peaceful ruins in a lovely setting. The second is the remarkable frescoes by Primaticcio in the still well preserved Chapel (Unfortunately they are currently being restored). The theird is the highly eclectic Museum that was put together by the Jacquemart couple when they bought the property. It includes two very fine Giottos (part of a series). Luckily the museum highlights some of the other key works as one could easily get lost otherwise in a collection that seems haphazard at times.

Beautiful place. Nice rose garden, romantic ruins but incredible collection of art put together by Nelly jacquemart Andre who then gave it to the institut de France.

I visited this place more than a hundred times, and I am not bored yet. Visit the ruins, the Chapel and its ceiling, the Orangerie exhibition, and the Museum in the Castle. The Museum has an incredible collection of busts and a worldwide known series of items from Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Unfortunately, the Museum is only open on Sundays in winter.

We really enjoyed our visit to this former abbey/chateau now a museum. Mdm. Jacquemart-Andre's collection gathered on her many trips all over the world is outstanding and varied. When she willed it to France it was with the stipulation that it cannot be changed. The Chateau is of a manageable size and the extensive grounds are impressive too. There is a rose garden, ruined abby, lovely chapel, free parking, 8 Euros. Free English room guide available for the Museum.

There is a lot here. There are stunning Abbey ruins that are interesting, but especially beautiful. There is a lovely restored chapel. Also really good rose gardens, even in October. Lastly there is the Chateau which is eclectic. The one problem with it is that it was left with a stipulation that things not be changed, so that it is not curated. The good news is that it shows how the owner lived with it. The bad news is that there is not a lot of logic to it and there are some really special pieces that are just lost in the vast amount of art and objets she collected. Definitely worth a visit.

This was the country home of Nelie Jacquemart, an avid collector of eclectic art. Many of the pieces contained in the museum were collected by her on her many forays around the world in the 19th and 20th century. This museum is a hidden gem, even our "arty" French friends were not aware of it. Go!! and be amazed.

Visit this abbey if you like old abbey ruins, and if you know the Jacquemart André Muséum, as this was the residence of Nelly Jacquemart. The two combined made a delightful day out for us, especially in a sunny day.

This was local to where we stayed in Ermenonville and decided to have a look. The building is derelict but there is plenty of it being enjoyed by many nesting swifts. It must have been impressive when complete. The grounds are extensive but marred by some sort of festival with loud music so we didn't stay long. The rose garden was pretty too. It cost €8 for entry which was worth it if you planned a whole day with a picnic.

The abbey at Chaalis, which flourished in the 13th and 14th centuries, subsequently fell into disrepair during the 16th century and later; rather like many English abbeys following Henry 8's dissolution of the monasteries, leaving the ruins that are visible today. In addition to the ruins there is a small chapel with a superb painted ceiling and behind it a rose garden. Still further, there is a large chateau/museum with numerous artefacts and paintings collected by a previous owner and several rooms which are left pretty much as they were during the heady days of the early 20th century. Needless to say the extensive grounds are meticulously cared for. The gift shop is also worth a visit although there are no catering facilities.
