Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Empire Arts Expresso has a new owner and name change. Coffee is still very good. Their hot fresh-made cinnamon brioche rolls are to die for! They also have fresh NZ traditional cheese rolls - delicious! Make sure you stop on your way thru Paparoa next time!

If you want a place to stop and have a coffee and a snack on the way to Dargaville, this is the place to stop. The staff are friendly, and I recommend their carrot cake (just make sure you leave a slice for me, please). It does seem these guys are only open on the weekend, which is my only negative :(

Love this wee gem on the kauri coast trail going up the kaipara harbour. It’s a must stop off for great food, coffee and ambiance. I challenge you to come out without a lovely piece of ceramics, some stunning jewellery or a gift for a friend. Authentic local kiwi artists producing very original pieces.

Trixie Delicious no longer stocks her hand painted china creations at Empire. They are mentioned in earlier reviews but are now available only online

Spotted this small cafe across the road when we parked up at the start of the Paparoa walkway.
“That looks interesting, we’ll check it out when we get back.”
On our return to the car, we shed our boots and day packs and headed across to the cafe.
We were greeted with a very friendly “hello “ as we walked in. We said hello back, but our eyes and our senses were too busy taking in the decor and setting style.
Definitely retro with abit of modern eclectic. Most of the art was for sale.
We ordered 2 coffees and a scone and chocolate cheesecake. The food was freshly homemade and beautiful and the coffee delicious. The service was very friendly, timely and unobtrusive.
A great little find.

Jillaine has worked hard to curate a beautiful gallery/shop that brings together people from Paparoa and beyond. You must stop here when driving through.

My friend and I were passing through town on the way to Auckland and decided to stop in and have a look - so happy we did! This store is bursting with beautiful art, trinkets, jewelry, etc. All of it is so unique (I'm from the US and know I won't be able to find any of it back home) and affordable. The owner has curated a collection for her store from local NZ artists which makes buying from her even more rewarding. I went home with a beautiful wall hanging and 3 zines. My friend couldn't resist a little art piece made up of vintage NZ stamps - this is really a must stop place - it will brighten your whole afternoon!

Jillaine Murray aka The Black Pixie opened her delightful little gallery almost a year ago. Beautifully curated with high quality fine art , collectibles and The Black Pixie textile. She also stocks Trixie Delicious Sweary china. Recommended.

Thanks so much for taking the time to review Empire. I'm really proud of the fact that the art and products in store are all made by NZ artists, most of whom live within an hour of the shop. It's easy to curate when you have beautiful goodies to work with!

It is great to see the proliferation of owner operator arts and crafts galleries opening across the country and the Empire is case in point. It has a lovely, well curated selection of bespoke wall art, ornaments and personal adornments made large from upcycled materials that celebrate New Zealand in clever and authentic ways. Owner Jillaine a craftswomen in her own right offers a warm personal service and a backstory for every featured artist in the gallery. Affordable artwork and a great stock of poetry from local legends Sam Hunt and Dave Merritt.

Thanks very much for taking the time to review Empire Jason. One of the best things about my work is chatting with all the wonderful people who pass through the shop and its great when they see and feel the heart and soul that's has gone into the place :-)

OK so I'm from Auckland and used to having all sorts of wonderful places at my fingertips, so finding Empire Art & Collectables hidden away in tiny little Paparoa was a wonderful surprise. What a fantastic quirky little shop! Full of surprising art and well, collectables. All sorts of bits and pieces from local Artists and Artisans; a wide range of prices to suit all budgets and a very varied selection of curios and wotsits to suit all manner of tastes.

I'd come across some of the arty crafty bits (those Trixie Delicious cups and the Black Pixie dollies!) at various craft shows and unlike standing at the shows didn't feel pressured to buy with the artist sat uncomfortably in front of me.

A lovely little shop, it's all laid out so you can browse comfortably. Not to mention there's EFTPOS so you don't have to have cash on you. The proprietress is friendly and clearly has a strong artistic bent as the whole place is soothing and pleasing to the eye.

Conveniently placed across from the green with lots of parking, we've found Paparoa a great place to break the journey and grab a bite or drink at one of the local shops and pat the lovely old lab next door, who wanders slowly past Empire.
