We stayed for two weeks in Leon, one week in the 'office' of the Isla Fundacion and one week in the 'casa'. Besides, we had a two weeks Spanish course. We had a great stay, felt very welcome and it didnt cost that much! I would definately recommend the isla fundacion!

Hands down best Salsa lessons in town. Great organization, great cause, great work, great people, great accommodations. I can't imagine a better situation for compassionate travelers on a budget.

Great salsa lessons with Jose! My boyfriend and I took two 2 hour private sessions with the foundation. It was fun and the instructions were great! Pricing was very reasonable!

My partner and I took at tour out to the community of La Isla which included an incredible lunch made by a woman in the community and presentation by one of the staff members. We were so humbled by everyone we met associated with La Isla Foundation from their dedication to their enthusiasm to share their work. We definitely plan on going back and volunteering in the future. Also, we spent the night in one of the rooms they rent in their building. The room was very clean and comfortable. HIGHLY RECOMMEND making La Isla Foundation part of anyone's trip (short term or long term) to Leon!!

What a great place this is. I have taken spanish classes here and I am proud to say my spanish has improved thanks to Professor Angel. He is, for lack of better words, "the man". He has been patient with me and taught me the important steps to learning the language. I can see from spending time in the office that La Isla provides a comfortable environment, and I enjoyed my time here.

Excellent Spanish classes!
Nov 2012 • Solo
I took two weeks of Spanish classes (with Teresita, I would highly recommend her) which I found both very good value and really helpful. A total of 40 hours improved my grammar, broadened my vocabulary and when I left León I felt a lot more confident talking. Some weeks later I got a nice compliment saying my teacher should get a medal, cause my Spanish was really good.

The classes are flexible, if you want something specific just ask, there's coffee and water in the office. I also think it's supernice to spend money on Spanish classes in an NGO, so the money goes to Isla's work.

Muchas gracias por todo, Isla!

'Well worth your time' - is an understatement!

There is no doubt in my mind that La Isla Foundation's "raison d'être" is among the noblest of human endeavors. And that is to exist solely to serve others.

In this instance that service is a race against time trying to find a cause and possible solution or cure to the health problem plaguing a small Nicaraguan community.

Young men, in the sugar cane industry, are dying at early ages from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). To say that this is devastating to the community should come as no surprise. Fortunately, La Isla has many dedicated volunteers who are attempting to eliminate this problem.

In addition, others are assisting by donating to the cause. There are several ways to do so. One can simply make a donation, or go there in person and experience a variety of activities suited to the adventurous soul. They include: learning Spanish and/or how to salsa; visiting Leon or other cities; visiting natural reserves or one of the several nearby volcanoes. Do these and assist La Isla and its worthy cause

In doing so, you will step into a world far different from our own. And be sure to savor the friendship of the volunteers, for such as these, saints are made.

Serve yourself and others

Leon is a remarkable city and there are so many ways to experience it. You can stumble through on your own, pay a stranger to show you or become involved in the hospitality and service of La Isla Foundation. They provide clean and comfortable rooms with access to courtyard, kitchen and the company of interesting people. Become familiar with the language, Leon culture and Salsa dance in the capable hands of their workers. Tour the city or hike a volcano with their capable and knowledgable guides. We stayed at La Isla and participated in tours feeling we had the best of Leon. Furthermore, the money they make in this industry helps fund their mission of addressing the epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease in the nearby communities of sugar cane harvesters. Their research, comminity involvement and health fairs are making an important impact in the lives of people afffected by this disease. This is a way to support their work and enjoy Leon!

I love La Isla!
Jan 2012 • Solo
I volunteered with the public health team at La Isla Foundation for two months and had an AMAZING experience. I got to teach classes to kids in the community, and they were so much fun! I also took a couple of Spanish lessons with a brilliant teacher, Angel, who taught me so much about Nicaraguan culture and history, and I took TONS of salsa lessons with Enur, Alberto, and Siril at the foundation. I loved learning salsa, and found plenty of opportunities to practice in Leon, a beautiful and fun city. I also stayed at the hostel at La Isla for a week or so, and was very happy with the room, staff, and other guests! La Isla is a great organization with a lot to offer tourists and the community. If you get a chance to stay there, take classes/tours, or volunteer and learn about the chronic kidney disease I highly recommend this organization!

Salsa and Spanish, the essentials!
Mar 2012 • Solo
I stumbled upon La Isla Foundation when I was passing through Leon looking for a place to volunteer. Right away I got a good vibe from the people and the organization. As I learned more about the CKD epidemic and what La Isla was doing to address this problem, I felt more drawn to them. After traveling around Nicaragua I went back to Leon and joined the La Isla family. I chose to stay in one of the foundation's private rooms - which has all of the essentials including a comfy bed, bathroom and a fan! During my 3 month stay, I took Spanish classes and Salsa lessons. The spanish classes were great, the teachers were knowledgeable and flexible with the scheduling. The salsa classes I took with Eyner were awesome to say the least! Ever so patient, Eyner was the perfect teacher who took the time to make sure that you got the steps right and made learning salsa fun! I highly recommend taking one of the many classes La Isla has to offer. The fact that portions of the proceeds go to help the cause is just the icing on the cake!
