Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a great day out. How often do you get to make something special from nothing? Simon is a casual and great guide in the art of knife making. Everyone made such a unique and special knife. It was like giving birth. There were times of intense labour times of joy, times of anticipation, and wonder at the finished product. What a great day.

One of the best, most memorable days! Simon was incredibly kind, helpful and entertaining throughout the day. Our knives are so special and we'll remember the day forever. Knife throwing was so much fun. Thank you for an incredible day. We loved it!

We had so much fun making knives with Simon! The 3 of us went not expecting much more than going back home with a butter knife. But all the knives turned out great in their own styles. The process is super fun - from hammering to polishing and choosing the handle material. We had a great day and it was such an interesting experience.
Also, it's not as hard as we imagined, which means people with not so strong upper body strength (like me) can still do the hammering and all. We were still functional the next morning!
On a side note, lunch (pizza) was good too, and there is plenty of coffee to get a good morning start.

This is our 3rd trip to New Zealand (more than 9 months total) and this is easily in the top 5 activities (including Lord of the Rings tours at Mt Sunday and Hobbiton, Rotorua Canopy Tour, Milford Sound cruise). Simon not only gives you all the tools and supplies to create your very own masterpiece, but he also provides invaluable guidance and hands-on assistance tailored to your specific needs. You definitely get a workout as you beat out your steel heated from the forge. And carving your custom wooden handle is the cherry on top. Having a hand-crafted, working artifact, along with Simon's gracious sharing of knowledge and experience, is what makes this activity a 'CAN'T MISS."

Simon, the instructor did an excellent job at balancing the safety, instruction, fun atmosphere and success of each student. I was very impressed with the set up of the workshop, the instructor and my sons knife.

Been there with my wife, had discovered it on a brochure. This is one of the best experiences I've had in my life. You will make your knife (the shape and finale use is up to you) from a raw steel bar, hammering, cutting, polishing, making the hilt, all by yourself, all in single day. Totally worth it, Simon would deserve the 6th TripAdvisor Star. Try it if you can.

This is a must do if you visit the Abel Tasman - Marlborough region.
Wakefield is not too far from either and this is an experience 100% worth the trip!
Simon is such a great, welcoming and knowledgable guy who is a master of his trade.

We had such a fun day creating our knives from scratch.
Simon guided us well and helped when necessary.

You have real freedom to create something unique which was brilliant and although it’s tough work its well worth every second.

You got tea, coffee and water throughout the day and ample lunch from the local pizzeria which was very good too.

We’d definitely come again to Make a Knife and have recommended to many friends heading Simons way :)

Our knives were the perfect moments from our New Zealand trip.

As a mother of teenage boys, I tagged along on this family outing not expecting that it would be particularly interesting to me. Boy was I wrong! I had a ball, discovering how knives are made, and seeing my own knife materialise before my very eyes. Our whole family enjoyed the experience of designing and crafting our own knives. Hammering the hot steel was quite hard work for me- thankfully Simon added some of his own muscle to my pounding for this stage. Later in the day I was introduced to the world of grinders, sanders and polishers. Even used a blow torch to temper the steel!
All safety gear is provided, including leather aprons and gloves, safety glasses and earplugs.
Simon was friendly, helpful and very talented at sharing his skills.
I am rather proud of my own handcrafted knife, and would recommend this activity to anyone curious to know how knives are made and keen to create their very own masterpiece.
