Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My husband & I have always liked cooking out at Weldon Springs. One of the things we always liked was it doesn't close till 10:00p.m., and no one ever came around to bother us. But now we think the Park Rangers should patrol it more often. We were cooking at one of their sites on November 8, 2013, And the time had already changed, so it got dark earlier. When we first got there- there was already a car parked there. (Could have been a white Ranchero with a topper on the back.) But we didn't see anybody, so we just figured they were walking on the trails & would eventually come back & leave. So we started cooking. It got to be about 7:00p.m. & we were almost done cooking, but it was really dark & getting colder. The only light we had was the campfire & 2 little lanterns. We had gotten in the car to warm up while we waited on the food. Then all of a sudden 2 men- probably in their early twenties- came up out of the woods. They came & leaned against their car, (our car was right next to theirs), and they just stared at us in our car. We couldn't hear what they were talking about. I didn't want him to, but eventually my husband got out to check on the food & put the last thing on the grill. I stayed in the car, I was scared. My husband started bringing our stuff to the car to put it away. Then I turned on the headlights so we could both see what was going on better. Then I noticed one of the men put the bandana around his neck up over his nose & mouth- all I could see was his eyes. My husband went to the back of the car for something, and another older man came out of the woods & they all followed my husband. I couldn't see a thing & was about to panic when I saw my husband beside the car door again. I said, "Get the rest of our stuff & LET"S GO!" He said, "Our food is still up there." I told him I didn't care & they could have it. So he got the last thing- them still watching him the whole time. He got back in the car & I pulled away as fast as I could. I'm sure they thought he would go back after the food. And I think it was smart that I never got back out of the car., I could have had a gun or something. I didn't- but they didn't know that. Anyway, We will not be cooking after dark any more. It really is a nice park to enjoy in the daylight though.

I always enjoy visiting this park because it's so quiet and peaceful. I often kayak on the lake and there is a beautiful hidden spot with tons of lilly pads. There are quite a few playground areas for kids and easy trails that loop around the park. There is camping and tons of picnic tables to enjoy a picnic. One of my favorite go to spots if I want to enjoy a relaxing day.

The park is very nice and clean. Campsites are pretty close together but not too bad. Camp host was nice but when I rode my Segway past her she informed me that electric anythings are not allowed, no electric scooters not even children cars. Not very child/kid friendly. She said it’s the Superintendent’s policy and it is state wide. I have never had anyone say anything to me. By the way, I’m 65 years young. I complied with the rule.

The campground at Weldon Springs is a lovely, heavily shaded venue. Very enjoyable to have the trees and shade on a hot summer day!
The layout seems very tight for large rigs, due not only to the trees, but also the small overall size of the the grounds. I don't claim to be an expert at towing -- far from it -- but I think even the most expert driver would be challenged to get a large trailer in the pull-through sites. The entrances are relatively narrow and are built over culverts, so there is a ditch on both sides -- no room for error. Combine that with narrow roads, challenging post locations and trees, and it's hard to get the turning radius required for a large trailer. If you are comfortable backing into a site, you're probably better off to do so.
The sites offer only electrical service, and not all offer 50 amp -- a fact that was overlooked when I checked in. Fortunately, we had pleasant Fall weather, and did not require both air conditioners.
The host (I'm sorry I don't have his name) was congenial and made the effort to be helpful on multiple occasions. I regret to say his spouse was the opposite. I think she felt the need to play the role of "the enforcer," and simply was not friendly about anything. Enough said.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay. This is a no-frills campground, but a lovely get-away.

Whether you are looking for serenity, to be one with nature or a nice place to play, camp or fish, this park is the perfect little getaway for you. It has many beautiful features, the State employees and local volunteers clearly take pride in this park. There are many educational features to the park. It also has the perfect trail for hiking, a perfect road for walking/exercising, hidden spots for picnics and camping. There are many lots available for rent for affordable parties and even weddings. I would definitely recommend this park for a quick break from your day/week!

We have come here several times. But didn't realize they had such a great hiking trail, where there is a abandoned farm.

I like to go on hiking trips, and Weldon Springs is a great place to train. It's hard to find hills in Central Illinois, but you can experience them around the lake. The park fell into some disrepair at one point when the State cut off funding to their parks, but the Weldon Springs Foundation is doing a good job of getting the trail stairs and bridges back into shape.

According to family circle magazine, this is one of 20 best campgrounds. I have no idea where the reviewers were but this place is no match for Kickapoo state park campground. Not for big rigs, maybe 25 foot motor homes and tents. I would never camp here. The plots are not level and most plots are not suitable for rvs as they are too short and not level. The park is nice though.

We took our kids here 30 years ago and it's still a great place to take your kids. Great place to take them fishing as the lake is full of blue gill. Don't miss the spring water fountain. I wouldn't recommend drinking out of it now but 50 years ago when I was a kid it was superb! Stay all day hike, fish, picnic, play grounds, pavilion.
