Neighbourhood: Downtown / The Loop
Often visitors' first stop in Chicago, The Loop is a good starting point to sample the city's energy and flavor. This central business district boasts Michelin-rated restaurants, upscale hotels, premier shopping, and enough arresting architecture to keep your camera busy for hours. You won’t find too many photo galleries of downtown Chicago without a shot of Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (“The Bean”), one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. A stunning skyline coupled with cultural attractions like the Art Institute of Chicago present a Downtown where work and play peacefully coexist.

Macy's Chicago - Great Place to Shop
From high-end fashion brands to household essentials, Macy's Chicago has something for everyone. One cool thing about Macy's Chicago is they have fancy clothes from famous designers. They also have special events and sales sometimes. Must Visit at the time of thanksgiving.

Beautiful store and building. Tiffany glass dome.
We parked in a parking garage across the street on a Wednesday morning. It was $17 for 3 hours, but you must reserve online on an app. We wanted to see the Tiffany Dome in the Macy’s store. It is gorgeous. Just ask an employee if you need help finding it. You can see it from the fragrance department on the main floor. We went up to the 6th floor to see the dome at a closer view. It is really beautiful! We also looked at the Walnut Room. It was not yet open for the day. It is lovely. We read about the history of Marshall Fields. There is a display on one of the floors. It is nicely done. There is a pedway in the lower level that connects to some of the office buildings, hotels and other stores in the Loop. We did not even know it existed. It is open 9-5. A friendly employee told us about the stained glass art in the pedway just outside of Macy’s. It is recovered from a Stained Glass museum that used to be on Navy Pier. Macy’s is a lovely store. We enjoyed our time there. It is historic and has beautiful architecture. There is also a skylight with a huge American flag hanging in that space. It is an impressive sight.

    Great building
We visited Macy's in NYC so I was delighted to see the department store is also in this city. The Marshall Field and Company Building, Beaux-Arts and Commercial style complex was built in two stages—north end in 1901–02 (including columned entrance) and south end in 1905–06. You should made a stop and explore it.

We went as a family group, our 2 daughters , ages 38 and 43 my husband and I. We have gone to Marshall Fields in the past when our children were young. We always enjoyed the Christmas tree and having hot chocolate or a snack by the tree in the Walnut room. This trip is the first one we have been able to make in 7 years. The store looked dirty and run down and Macy’s has sold the upper floors so the viewing area for the tree is no longer there. You can stand outside the walnut room and view but it is not the same! We went to the Christmas clearance section downstairs and found only one associate working and she was extremely rude! We observed her being rude to a couple of ladies that were probably in their early 80’s. Having worked retail myself, I offered to help them as they were trying to scan an item for a price check. The associate told them to scan but did not offer to help. Had she offered she would have found that the scanner wasn’t operational at the time. I took the item in question and found a different scanner and got the price for them. It upset me so that these ladies were treated so poorly that I called the store offices from my cell phone and informed the woman that answered as to what was going on and that they needed to get a manager to that area. She did ask for the associate’s name but she had already high tailed it out of that area. When asked if there were any other employees in the area, I told her no employees just shoppers. She said she would send someone. Unfortunately I was not able to hang around until someone showed up but did inform one of the ladies that I helped that someone from management team was coming! Macy’s, you have completely ruined Marshall fields.

Prepare to be overwhelmed and lost. If you go, don’t go tired. So many departments with no seeming rhyme or reason to them. Hard to find what you’re looking for. Signs clearly marked the way to the bathrooms, but bathrooms were only accessible by lock codes, but no information given on how to get the code. The building could be really cool, but looks like some of the old architecture is in desperate need of updates.

The last stop of our Chicago Architecture Center walking tour was at the Macy’s on State Street, which occupies historical Marshall Field and Company Building. You can see its stunning Tiffany main hall ceiling from the first floor and then go to the 5th floor to admire its beautiful details. The glass ceiling looks like blue sky crowning the temple of marble columns and brass decorations. So lavish and elegant! There is not a bit of redundancy or overwhelming opulence in the majestic interior of the Marshall Field and Company Building, just elegance and grace.

There were no customers at the Macys, not a single soul, and that’s for two days in a row. I doubt there is any future for large department stores - we buy everything online these days… it would be such a pity to lose magnificent historic Marshall Field and Company Building.

Awful. We traveled all the way from Minneapolis to see Santa land. What a sad disappointment. We got stuck standing in line to see Santa for an hour when we kept telling them we didn’t want to see him and just wanted out. No one would let us out. Store was hot and sparse for goods. Bathrooms were atrocious and window displays left a lot to be desired. An overall disappointment.

I go to State Street Macys every year to see the holidays windows. To say they were underwhelming this year is being polite. It really was a waste of time. They need to make them great or skip all together because this year was not worth the drive, parking and time.

My favorite stop while visiting Chicago. The decorations are so beautiful. The windows this year are so heart-felt. Give Joy, Give Back, Give Surprise, Give Love, Give Wonder. Thank you Macy's for bringing the Christmas season to life!

I was shopping at Macy's State street store on 6/29/22. I spent over $600 dollars. i had to use the restroom and found out that i needed a code to access. Good luck finding someone to give you the code. As a person of a certain age,76, I have less control of my bladders than a younger person. This is the only Macy that I have been to that have this system. I will not return to this store and will be contacting the corporate office.

Having last visited when it was the traditional Marshall Fields, I was disappointed at the bland decor. We looked in on the Walnut Room but that had been sectioned off. I specifically wanted to buy a Christmas Tree decoration but could find these only on a floor where the were no tills, then when I did locate a till, the member of staff suggested I tip her (for what, standing behind her till being a bit surly?). Such a shame and not what I would expect from either MF or Macy's
