As a group of 3 couples, we recently biked the Clyde Gold Bike Trail. Shebikeshebikes worked with us to prepare our itinerary, and we couldn't have been happier with the experience we received. Being an inexperienced biker, the first leg of the journey from Clyde to Roxburgh was pretty tough (for myself) - even on the ebike, however our more experienced riders really enjoyed the challenge it offered. With steep downward slopes and switchbacks, it kept everyone on their toes :) This leg also saw us crossing the Clyde River by Jetboat supplied by Clutha River Cruises, and the information shared about the Gold Mining era was incredibly informative. The next two days of biking (day 2 from Roxburgh Hydro to Beamount, and day 3 Beaumont Lawrence) were a lot easier than day 1, however the scenery on all 3 days was just stunning! Accommodation booked for us by Shebikeshebikes was second to none, and we only wished that we had a week, not just one night at Mata-Au Lodge. A really fun experience with wonderful friends that simply flowed due to the organisation of Shebikeshebikes.

We have just completed the Clutha Gold bike trail in 2 days and enjoyed every minute. The gold mining history is fascinating and we loved going through and staying at some great places in the Teviot Valley. The motorcamp at Miller's Flat has great cabins and the Tavern there was great for an evening meal. Jude from Absolutely Lawrence took us up to the start at Roxborough Dam and we can't fault the track. The Clutha river is stunning;we loved everything about the trip and thoroughly recommend it. You can buy a tag before or after you do the ride at the Lawrence Information centre; 10 $ a day per person is recommended so that the Trust can keep up the high standard of track maintenance.

My wife and i did this trail as part of a two week cycling holiday all organised by Central Cycle trails Ltd. They are brilliant!!
We did the trail over two days, Lake Roxburgh to Millers Flat the first day and then Millers Flat to Lawrence the second.
The first day was absolutely lovely, vert easy with plenty of time to enjoy the journey. the weather turned a bit chilly but we had lovely warm overnight accommodation so were well prepared for day 2. This section was 44kms long and the first part to Beaumont was great. It was the ride from Beaumont to Lawrence that was perhaps a little disappointing as much of the ride was longside the main highway with nowhere to stop and eat our lunch away from the traffic.
However, that shouldn't distract from what was an overall enjoyable couple of days
What was noticeable was the very few riders we met on the trail which might indicate that this trail is underutilised.

This is a fantastic trail. It's very well maintained and is an easy ride with beautiful views of the Clutha River and surrounds, There are only a few hills, and the e-bike option is a good one for anyone who is put off by peddling uphill. The stretch from the Roxburgh Dam to Beaumont is the most beautiful. The leg from Beaumont to Lawrence runs along the state highway, out of necessity, but the tunnel at the top is well worth the climb, and from there the trail pretty much parts company with the highway and heads into farmland for the last few kms into Lawrence.
People seem to do the trail in two days, but super-fit off-road fans could easily do it in one. We were based at the Roxburgh Lodge and did the trail in two days, assisted by Roxburgh Passenger Transport and Highland Bike Hire (fantastic bikes in excellent condition).

Cycled from Roxburgh to Lawrence in about 6-7 hours on conventional bikes. Weather wasn't great, and we thought of cancelling, but it did not distract from the experience at all. Track in excellent condition and stunning colours. Very gentle rise towards tunnel but nothing to be concerned about. Excellent signage.

Rode the Clutha Gold Trail and Roxburgh Gorge Trail, organised through SheBikesHeBikes and as usual they did a stellar job of organising another superb biking adventure for our family of 4, including 2 teens. The trail is beautiful and quite remote in some places, we had one day of sunshine, one day of freezing wind and rain and one day of snow. The organiser was incredibly accommodating of us and any of our requests, and a special mention to Melrose Cottages where we stayed one of the two nights for a very warm welcome and delicious dinner.

This was a great ride, organised by Central Cycle Trauls. Plenty to see and a very nice add-on to the Central Otago Rail Trail.
Our 40-min cruise as a transfer during the Roxburgh Gorge ride was a real blast – both exciting and very interesting, as jet-boat driver Lawrence gave us his insights on the lives of the early gold dredging operations in the area. He took us in very close to many of the ruins of the miner’s dwellings. It was definitely a high point of our Central Otago experience. Thank you, Lawrence and CCT, from 4 grateful Aussies!

We used Shebikeshebikes to organise this wonderful adventure. As usual they delivered excellent service with a perfect itinerary for what we wanted. They helped with the best dates, so as to to enjoy the best of the autumn colours in the area, our accommodation options and return shuttle and e-bikes.
It all went seamlessly, from our first ever ride on e-bikes (which included excellent tuition and practice before we set off).
Day 1 is spectacular, along the mighty Clutha and the autumn colours were glorious. Staying at the Quince Cottage in Millers Flat was an absolute ‘stand out’ hospitality experience. Day 2 and 3 are more rural but lots to see and enjoy learning about relating to the area. We had lovely food at the Beaumont Hotel including their famous whitebait meal. Lawrence was a very interesting place to finish at, so much so I hope to return more and have more time to explore the area.

In February my husband and I and another couple from the UK biked the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold Trails on ebikes organised by Shebikeshebikes who hired us the bikes, arranged all the accommodation and transported our luggage to arrive before we did at every night stop on the way. This was an excellent 3 day trip. Much of the ride is alongside the Clutha River which is fast-flowing and magnificent. The trails are extremely scenic and there is an expensive but fun 13km jet boat trip along part of the river where there is no bike trail on the first day. The trails pass through country with lots of interesting gold mining history. We stayed one night at the Roxburgh Lodge which was very comfortable with a good evening meal. The second night we stayed at Millers Flat at the Quinces which is the most fabulous boutique bed and breakfast right on the Clutha Gold Trail. Our separate dwelling was set in a lovely garden and was beautifully decorated and furnished. The owners produced a stunning dinner of the highest quality. Shebikeshebikes had also organised our ride on the Otago Central Rail Trail the previous year. Shebikeshebikes provided an excellent service. On each trip they took great trouble to provide us with a bespoke itinerary which precisely met our needs in terms of the amount of distance it suited us to travel each day and accommodation which suited our tastes and budget. The organisation worked perfectly. The bikes and other equipment were waiting for us when we turned up, all the accommodation was ready for us and the transfer of our luggage each day went without a hitch. Shebikeshebikes suggested that we hire their ebikes which worked perfectly for us. It meant that we could travel reasonable distances each day while still enjoying the scenery and only being comfortably exercised at the end of each day. The ebikes were excellent machines. They were comfortable and well maintained. All in all it was an excellent trip which we would highly recommend.

I have done both ends of the trail by picking up bikes at Roxburg and cycling back and forth, and then again from Alexandra and going back and forth again. The sections from Roxburgh has considerably more climb. Both sections are equally spectacular and just use an electric bike if the distance or climb is a deterrent. It is an activity not to be missed. This was the second time we cycled from the Alexandra end of it and it only took us 2.5hours, so a half day bike hire is plenty of time with lunch in between by the gorgeous river. My son did some mountain biking at Flat Top conservation area which can be accessed from the trail from Alexandra.

Gidday churpike. My wife is concerned about the jet boat ride up the gorge as she has a sensitive back. Is it rough? Do you get thrown around in the boat, are you stapped in etc. I assured her it won't be too rough but would certainly appreciate your honest assessment. Many thanks, Greg. Sydney. AUS.

Hello, I have not done the jetboat ride myself, but this is a still hydro lake, NO rapids. Would only be rough if the driver made it so or because of weather. Thanks, Xavier xx

Only one question for sxmitch26. My wife (63 old) is concerned about being thrown about whilst in the jet boat. She and some others in our group (12 in total) have slightly dodgy backs and are worried the bouncing about in the 'jet boat' might be a risk. Please advise your experience. I'm sure the driver can tone it done to suit a wide and varied mix of passengers??? Cheers, Greg.

Our experience was also calm with great commentary. It is not a thrill seeking ride. The boat driver also helps getting your bike off and on and securing it to the boat. I think you should be fine, but if in doubt it would not hurt to mention your concerns. Enjoy!
