Clutha Gold Magic!
Apr 2021
We used Shebikeshebikes to organise this wonderful adventure. As usual they delivered excellent service with a perfect itinerary for what we wanted. They helped with the best dates, so as to to enjoy the best of the autumn colours in the area, our accommodation options and return shuttle and e-bikes.

It all went seamlessly, from our first ever ride on e-bikes (which included excellent tuition and practice before we set off).

Day 1 is spectacular, along the mighty Clutha and the autumn colours were glorious. Staying at the Quince Cottage in Millers Flat was an absolute ‘stand out’ hospitality experience. Day 2 and 3 are more rural but lots to see and enjoy learning about relating to the area. We had lovely food at the Beaumont Hotel including their famous whitebait meal. Lawrence was a very interesting place to finish at, so much so I hope to return more and have more time to explore the area.

Fantastic trail
Apr 2021
Cycled from Roxburgh to Lawrence in about 6-7 hours on conventional bikes. Weather wasn't great, and we thought of cancelling, but it did not distract from the experience at all. Track in excellent condition and stunning colours. Very gentle rise towards tunnel but nothing to be concerned about. Excellent signage.

Really good bike trail

Not too flat to be boring, not to difficult to be scared. Spectacular views and amazing scenery. Well used and maintained track.

Not as flat as we thought
Jan 2021 • Family
I have done two sections of the trail. Firstly with my family from Lawrence to the tunnel on the bikes and then ran from Roxburgh along the trail heading towards to Dam. Both parts are good for both bikes and running, but there are some sharp turns so be aware that you are experienced as my daughter missed a turn and ended in water, but all safe. The route is definately not flat so be aware that it it is up and down. Take a torch for the tunnel.

Better than the Rail trail from our perspective. Beautiful and varied. 3 days ideal. ‘Bike it now’ was lovely to deal with-good recommendations except we chose our own in Lawrence.

Clutha Gold Trail adventure
Sep 2020
Rode the Clutha Gold Trail and Roxburgh Gorge Trail, organised through SheBikesHeBikes and as usual they did a stellar job of organising another superb biking adventure for our family of 4, including 2 teens. The trail is beautiful and quite remote in some places, we had one day of sunshine, one day of freezing wind and rain and one day of snow. The organiser was incredibly accommodating of us and any of our requests, and a special mention to Melrose Cottages where we stayed one of the two nights for a very warm welcome and delicious dinner.

Clutha Gold is a great extension ride to the Otageo Rail Trail
Mar 2020
My wife and I cycled the rail trail plus the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold trails in early March, in that order. This was part of a broader programme to visit those parts of NZ that we hadn't seen before (e.g. Stewart Island, Taranaki etc. ) and to celebrate the start of our retirement. All three of these packed gravel bike trails were terrific. The gentler Otago Rail Trail (ORT) served as a warm-up/training ride for the more challenging Roburgh and Clutha trails. We were only occasional cyclists and "moderately" fit (i.e. capable of multi-hour, easy bush walks) when we started in Middlemarch. My wife was also recovering from some major medical treatment. Still, we both managed our four day ORT itinerary relatively comfortably, with my wife riding on an e-bike while I used a regular one. This not to suggest that these trails are "a piece of cake". We were definitely in better shape by the time we finished. Middlemarch to Clyde also seemed like the better direction to ride the trail on, even though most go in the opposite direction. Given our limited preparations, seat pads on the bikes were a good investment. All the logistics were organised by Kara Rutherford and her team at Shebikeshebikes. I have no hesitation in recommending them. Theirs is a well-run and responsive business. The cycling equipment provided was good (the gears and electronic guides worked etc.) and the accommodation they recommended was as described. And, while the cost seemed steep when we first looked into this, it was both value-for-money and "reasonable" when we stopped to consider all of the components (meet & greet, a final fitting of the bike to the rider, transfers, as well as coming out on the trail on short notice to fix a fault on one of our bikes etc.). We would gladly do this all again and we would do it with Shebikeshebikes. The only thing we'd perhaps change were our decisions on two of our ORT nights to go to the local pub/bar rather than cook our B&B providers' offered barbeque dinners. When we did cook one of these during the Clutha Gold trail, it was spectacularly good. All in all, we've come away with very warm memories and we're certainly happy to recommend it as a trip.

Great ride
Mar 2020
Five of us from Vic, Australia, rode from Middlemarch to Lawrence in five days, early March 2020. We used Shebikeshebikes. Bikes, accommodation organisation, luggage transfer were all very good. They looked after one of our party who crashed off, and couldn’t ride on the last day. Great ride.

A brilliant ride with history and stunning scenery.
May 2020
We have just completed the Clutha Gold bike trail in 2 days and enjoyed every minute. The gold mining history is fascinating and we loved going through and staying at some great places in the Teviot Valley. The motorcamp at Miller's Flat has great cabins and the Tavern there was great for an evening meal. Jude from Absolutely Lawrence took us up to the start at Roxborough Dam and we can't fault the track. The Clutha river is stunning;we loved everything about the trip and thoroughly recommend it. You can buy a tag before or after you do the ride at the Lawrence Information centre; 10 $ a day per person is recommended so that the Trust can keep up the high standard of track maintenance.
