About
Built in 1371, Dundonald Castle is a splendid example of a medieval tower house, with a fine barrel-vaulted ceiling in the lower hall. Sitting on a prominent hilltop in Dundonald village, Dundonald Castle commands fine views over the Firth of Clyde. The castle was built on the site of earlier castles belonging to the High Stewards of Scotland and can be regarded as the cradle of the Stewart Dynasty. Explore the high-vaulted halls and gloomy dungeons of this splendid stronghold, perched on a hill above the village. The main tower was built in the 1370s by King Robert II to mark his succession to the throne. The Castle Visitor Centre includes an exhibition illustrating the history of the site and a display of some of the artefacts found during archaeological excavations on the hill. There is also a souvenir shop and a small coffee shop which also sells cakes, soup and sandwiches. The Castle and Visitor Centre are open all year round.

- Simon M1 contributionGreat visitLovely little trip! Our guide (June) was very knowledgable, engaging and really brought the tour to life. She gave great advice about other sites of interest nearby which added to our experience of the area overall. Fantastic cafe and gift shop too.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 November 2023
- Peter GGlasgow, United Kingdom57 contributionsHidden Gem: Anyone visiting Ayrshire should add this to their itinerary.Didn't know anything about this castle until I saw the brown sign for it on the A77, and took a punt. This is looked after by the Friends of Dundonald Castle, and they do a wonderful job. A tour guide comes with the entry fee, and my guide Dave was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic and enhanced my visit so much more than would have been the case if I was left to just wonder around myself (although there are interpretation boards throughout the site). There is also a small visitor centre with a cafe, a gift shop, and an excellent exhibition. Recommended!Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 January 2024
- Reb_MTFamagusta, Cyprus11 contributionsLittle GemThe castle was situated in a beautiful landscape towering over the local town. The tour guide was very knowledgeable & provided information in a delightful anecdotal style. The castle had a steep spiral staircase, from the lower Laigh Hall to the Great Upper Hall, which added a sense of adventure to the tour. Unobstructed views, from the Great Hall, allowed for wonderful photo opportunities. There was a small museum, below the castle in the visitor centre, which also housed a great coffee shop. Top Tip: Definitely try a large Cappuccino & Lemon Cannoli... Both delicious!!Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 28 January 2024
- Colinanne1991Inverkeithing, United Kingdom30 contributionsNot to be missed!Visited here today and what an experience. Despite the website saying it is a ruined 14C castle it is much much more. The first two levels are fully covered with a vaulted ceiling and the third floor, although open to the skies still shows the pillars of its own vaulted ceiling which is so atmospheric. The views are incredible. Would recommend to all my friends although it is on the top of a very steep hill!. The tour guide (Dave) was very knowledgeable and informative and went out of his way to take us around rather than wait for an afternoon tour. Above and beyond Dave, thank you so much!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 February 2024
- Laird OGlasgow, United Kingdom37 contributionsA great place to visit.Great cafe in the visitor centre next to the castle. Good food and friendly service. Lots of really nice items in the shop. Outside seating for the better weather. Dog Friendly. The castle itself is well worth a visit (fee payable) with lots to see and great views.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 March 2024
- Mike7 contributionsDundonald castle well worth a visitWe really enjoyed our visit to the castle. We are Historic Scotland members, so we have visited a lot of properties, but we enjoyed our visit today, which was greatly enhanced by our tour guide Johns knowledge and enthusiasm and not just being given a set of headphones. Having the personal touch of a tour guide definitely enhances the visit.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 March 2024
- Tom MUnited Kingdom7 contributionsAbsolutely fantastic! On the 25/04/2024 we paid for the tour with the fantastic June! She was incredibly informative and a fantastic host. Not only informing us of the history of Castle Dundonald, but recommended a few other places. We certainly took her up on the suggestion of Stirling Castle too 😃😍 I would highly recommend paying this place a visit and taking the tour, if you're into your history and are a fan of Robert the Bruce 😉 Thank you very much June, we appreciated our time with you very much!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2024
- Clan AAyrshire, United Kingdom33 contributionsHistory Abounds!Considering the age of the castle there's still lots to see. The building itself is beautiful and a feat of engineering. Our guide Nairn was amazing, full of energy and an obvious love for history and the castle itself. Really informative and knowledgeable. You felt the history just ooze from the stone. Not for people with limitedly mobility though. You can climb stairs onto an open gallery and then you have the option to climb a metal spiral staircase to the top floor, worth it for the views alone! Will definitely be back. There's also a lovely wee cafe and visitor centre on site.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 3 May 2024
- Rosemary C5 contributionsDundonald Castle tourReally enjoyed our tour of Dundonald Castle. We were a family party of 3 generations, aged from 3 to 70! Our guide was knowledgeable and held our interest throughout. The tour lasted about an hour, and we were then able to enjoy an ice cream from the cafe on what was a beautiful sunny day ( for a colder day, you can get coffee or hot chocolate too)! Beware though - the road from th cafe up to the castle is quite steep !Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 May 2024
- Chris TWakefield, United Kingdom3 contributionsMake the effort to visitWe visited the castle on the way back from Troon just because we were driving close by. How pleased we were that we did. We timed our visit just in time to catch June , a lovely lady who was doing a tour and her knowledge of the castle was amazing, people like her leave you wanting to know more. If you are anywhere near make sure to visit.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 May 2024

A staycation this year, noseying around in Ayrshire. The Visitor Centre has recently reopened after Covid restrictions. Although the castle is still closed to visitors (scheduled to reopen in August) it's possible to climb up the hill and wander around and the little museum area gives lots of useful information. Friendly staff in the cafe, social distancing guidelines maintained, hand sanitiser widely available, scrupulously clean toilets. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

I decided to return to the Dundonald Castle Visitors Centre after having popped in for lunch a few months ago. Just like the first time this was a really pleasant experience. The staff were wonderful and very welcoming, and the coffee and scone were delicious.
It was great to see the castle tour guide engaging with his customers even as they were walking up the hill to start the tour. I will definitely be back for a tour soon as the guides have an excellent reputation, based on other reviews.

A small castle but with very interesting history. Dave the tour guide was fab. Knowledgable, informative and could answer any questions. He followed all social distancing guidance even wiping down hand rails etc before each person had to use them.
The visitor centre was staffed by Ann & Megan. Two lovely ladies who served with a smile. Both were also informative and knowledgable about the castle and the local area.
I had a really lovely experience today and beneath these three staff members’ smiles and professionalism I could see the extra efforts they went to, to ensure all covid distancing and sanitising was in place.
A big thank you for my coffee and my husbands take away sandwich, served again with a smile and about 10 minutes before closing time. He thoroughly enjoyed it.
Lovely and I’ll definitely be back 👍🏻

Our tour guide Marisha was very knowledgeable about the castle's history and links to local families and towns. She answered all of our questions and made the tour personal to what we wanted to know. She brought everything to life and got us invested in the story!
There was scaffolding on the castle due to repairs which Marisha described in detail, this was very interesting. The scaffolding didn't stop us from touring the whole inside of the castle.

Awe it was a lovely way to spend an hour, the tour guide was young but very knowledgeable and answered all our questions posed from adults and children alike.
The interior of the castle is actually in amazing condition given the age of the structure. It’s a very simplistic design and interior but as I love local history and architecture I found it really interesting.
There’s a nice little visitors centre with lots of info and a cafe which is there to draw extra funds for the upkeep of the castle and grounds. All guides and workers are volunteers so please be generous if you can as it is run on a voluntary/donation basis.
The walk up to the castle is quite steep so anyone with limitations or disabilities would need to give themselves extra time to get to the top. Lots of stairs inside so maybe not suitable for wheelchair users.
The views are stunning; Loudon Hill, Isle of Arran and Goatfell, The Mennock and Crosshouse Hospital all within easy view.
The were people just relaxing, having picnics in the castle grounds so it’s obviously a well loved part of the local area.

The visitors centre has a small but well served cafe with every you’d want for family snacks , lunch or an afternoon cuppa.
There is a small museum telling the story of the famous castle and the staff are very helpful and friendly.
If you take a tour of the castle the guides are knowledgeable and helpful but just be aware that the castle is up a steep path.

My friend and I live local to the castle, but had never actually been on a tour. We both found it thoroughly interesting and really enjoyed learning about the history, which goes back to the 12th century. The building itself is beautifully and well preserved and the views well worth climbing the stairs to the top, even on a wet autumnal day as we had. Excellent tour and a great wee lunch back at the Cafe after.

Dundonald Castle
Dundonald, United Kingdom
Hi Vicky, many thanks for your message. The castle is situated at the top of quite a steep hill. A new path was recently installed which has improved surface grip and a number of mobility scooters have used it to access the castle. The ground floor of the castle is paved with flagstones and the double doors open to allow access. Unfortunately the upper floors are not accessible, being accessed via steep stairs. However, there are information boards on the ground floor which detail the layout of the upper floors and our guides are very good at providing tours from the ground floor.
We also have a lowered kerb from the car park to assist with access when you arrive.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Best wishes, Kirsteen

We will be visiting there in September. Can you suggest a vegan restaurant nearby, or restaurants with vegan options?
Written 15 April 2018
Yeah there aren't many options nearby. Possibly check out in Ayr? I managed to get vegan ice cream from there the other day, the ice cream shop right in the town centre, Renaldo's.

Written 15 April 2018
There are no vegan restaurants nearby or in the local area. There's Chef's World Buffet in the village so it might be worth checking if they offer any vegan options although I've been there and as a vegetarian there were plenty of options, but for vegan I'm not so sure.
