Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We are seeing all 50 state capitals, and Florida was our 46th. The “capital” is actually the former capital building restored as it appeared in 1902. It is now a capital museum. The architecture and design are pretty plain as far as capitals go. There are no murals, art work, sculptures, stained glass windows, or any sort of decoration or interesting architectural features. The current capital building, housing the governor’s office, the house, the senate is a 22-story building built in the 1970s. That is pretty much all I need to say about it. Utilitarian is how I’d describe it. We spent about 30 minutes wandering around the capital museum, which was only mildly interesting. We went up to the observation deck of the new capital building. A very helpful construction worker instructed us on the oh-so-complicated elevator system. I’m not sure we would have figured it out ourselves and the security people were there strictly to collect a paycheck.

Pretty building but sadly the museum is quite boring on the whole. There's some interesting aspects about the State's wildlife, people etc., but the videos about these are quite old, and one didn't even work. I ended up working out how to turn off the tv and video myself and getting it working again, but they definitely need an update. We couldn't get the attention of the person on the main desk as there was a huge school group visiting, so we gave up. Sadly little worth seeing on the inside apart from the Supreme Court Chamber, but the outside is pretty.

Well worth the time to see the Capitol of the state that I have lived in most of my life. It’s a free self guided walk around “tour” with multiple rooms on 2 floors with exhibits covering many decades. For me, it’s a must see!!!
Plan on at least an hour. There’s construction going on currently so we were slightly confused about where to park and how to get into the old Capitol building itself. We figured it out and we ended up parking on a street with a meter(bring coins!) We did not do the observation deck in the current Capitol building but you might want to check it out for the Tallahassee views.

The museum is "text heavy and artifact light." Children and teens may become easily bored.
The current Capitol was interesting but aside from the observation tower, there's not much to see or do there.
It's worth going to say you've been, but we won't be back.

The old and the new state capitols are back to back, so it's easy to visit both and see the contrast in the Senate and House chambers. The old capital has a self guided tour with displays. It's nice but kind of boring. The intro film needs to be updated.

It is amazing how we have grown. The inside of this building is so very small, no way could it accommodate all of the folks in the capital today. But it was a very nice look back at where we were - highly recommend it

Glad you enjoyed your visit. It is amazing to think that this building used to house all three branches of government. Especially when you can look right across the plaza and contrast the size with the new Capitol, which is only home to the Governor and the Legislature. There's an entirely separate building for the Supreme Court.

I've visited a lot of State Capitols in the USA but was slightly disappointed with this one as it's not as grand as many others. Not much at all in Tallahassee so isn't a must visit place.

Great place to visit while in Tallahassee! Florida government history with a few hands-on areas. Nice film outlining the history of our state's government.

A lot of information and history but it was mostly stuff written on presentation boards and a few short videos. It was neat to see the rooms where the house, Senate, and supreme court once met. Seen it, been there, probably wouldn't ever go again. It appears to be being renovated though.

It's hard to wander through the old capital building in Tallahassee without feeling like you're stepping back in time. It's restored to the way it looked in 1902, but the building dates back Florida became a state in 1845 and it doesn't take a great imagination to picture some of the debates that took place in those hallowed halls -- from secession to reconstruction to whether or not to abandon Tallahassee as the state capitol.
What sets the capitol museum apart from many similar historical site is that it is a living, working building: part of the building is still used as office space for business not related to the museum.
Inexplicably, it's also rarely crowded. The serene atmosphere is perfect for wandering at your own pace and letting your imagination run free.

how much time should be scheduled for a visit to the historic capital?
Are there a lot of stairs to climb or are there elevators?

Depending on your level of interest, you view everything in at least 2 hours! This is if you stop and look at the displays and read the stories!
