- Natalie Starling-BoothBirmingham, United Kingdom1,201 contributionsWonderful work they are providing to Sea TurtlesIt's no surprise this is No.1 top attraction on Marathon. This is a really lovely service they are providing to the Sea Turtles, their work is excellent and you can really see what a difference they are making to Turtles who are in need. The lady who took us along our tour was great, very knowledgable and it was so clear her love for these Turtles, we had a great tour and loved every minute. Even if you are just passing by the area, find an hour to visit here, they are doing amazing work and need our support.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 October 2023
- AJNNJ44New Jersey451 contributionsFin… noggin… dude! This is a must-stop experience while visiting (or just passing through) Marathon. The passion and dedication of the staff shines through and the mission is important. We did this early in our Keys trip and it gave us a deeper appreciation for the turtles we were able to spot in the wild during our vacation.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 October 2023
- Travelforfun2019Manitowoc, Wisconsin29 contributionsSuper Fun and EducationalWhile on a family vacation we decided to take a tour of the turtle hospital. I feel it is a responsibility of all humans to help our environment, however we can. This was an awesome opportunity and highly recommend. They are a nonprofit and survive on donations. Please go and make a difference!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 October 2023
- DDShullNorth Royalton, Ohio4 contributionsMarathon Key experienceInteresting and well worth the minimal entrance fee. Tour guide Melissa held our interest for the full 90 minute tour. Definitely recommend this visit in Marathon KeyVisited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 9 November 2023
- MP9898Manchester, United Kingdom3 contributionsInformative, interesting and worthwhileIf you’re passing through Marathon you need to go. They tell you the tour starts with a 25 minute PowerPoint presentation, which put us off initially with two under 10’s…. But it was far more interesting than they made it sound. Kids were engaged, the story of the hospital is interesting and the work they do is magical. Go and give them some of your dollars.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 November 2023
- Dave EMilford, Michigan16 contributionsMy favorite place to visitThe Turtle Hospital’s mission is to rescue, rehab, and release sea turtles. You will start with a very informative educational session about the different species found in the Florida Keys and the threats facing them today, especially the human impact. The guide will explain some of the treatments offered to the patients and then walk you through an area where you can see the ER and surgical suite. Next, you’ll be guided outside to visit some of the patients and permanent residents. The tour is capped off with the opportunity to feed some “turtle chow” to the non-releasable turtles. Melissa did a great job and I cannot recommend enough that you make a stop here on your Keys trip.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 November 2023
- 907blakedTampa, Florida1,456 contributionsEnjoyable timeWe enjoyed our tour here. We made our reservations same-day, and we were even able to move our time up by 30 minutes that afternoon since we were ahead of schedule. The staff was very nice, and the turtles were interesting. Our tour guide wasn’t the best, but it was fine. The tour lasted about 60 minutes (1 hour).Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 November 2023
- J B11 contributionsLearned so much!Paige was a wonderful guide. She had so much info to share that we couldn’t take it all in. She was great at answering questions and at repeating parts we missed. We loved seeing the named turtles in large pools of water and how much care they got. Children should be able to sit and listen to half hour talk beforehand. Our hotel manager said her 3 and 4 year couldn’t sit that long. But wonderful, wonderful tour. Sadly our photos are on our camera.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 December 2023
- Katelyn D3 contributionsAMAZING EXPERIENCEINCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE!! Our tour guide, Carla, was so so informative. She was entertaining and easy to follow, but it didn’t feel like it was performative or campy. Tons of views of the turtles. Really felt like you got a great experience. 10/10 recommend.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 December 2023

Excellent experience and learned so much! Sharon our guide was knowledge and passionate about educating on this endangered species. The facility and work is so impressive. Would recommend booking online or calling to reserve a spot in advance-tours seemed to be booked.

This has to beone of the best experiences anyone can have. You don't have to be a turtle lover when you go in but you will be when you leave and more importantly you will have a deeper understanding of the damage we are doing to our waterways and how plastics in particular are killing sea turtle life. Our ten year old grandson loved the tour from beginning to end of the 90 minute tour it flew by in no time (you need every bit of the 2 hours but not 3). In fact he left the Turtle Hospital quoting Tammy (our guide) the rest of the car ride down to Kew West. Speaking of Tammy-wow! She is entertaining, knowledgeable and informative. Tammy kept the audience, young and old alike, riveted to their seats while we watched a intoductory video in a well cooled room. Tammy answered questions from the audience with much patience.
Most Important-Make a reservation in advance-this place books up very quickly because it is that good. so my advice is book it in advance!

Reservations are required to limit group sizes. The staff is very helpful, considerate and knowledgeable. We had seniors down to teenagers and everyone enjoyed their visit. They even helped Grandma get around on the tour, it’s not a lot of walking but enough that they really helped her feel comfortable.

My fiancé and I came here as a unique outing to get away from the busyness that is Key West. The experience was wonderful and so informative. The tours are offered hourly (they last about an hr and half) and with a 38 person max per group. Although there were young children there and a few babies, it seemed smarter to bring older children as it was an hour and a half of education. We did see far more turtles than I anticipated and feeding them at the end was entertaining. The tour guide was very informative and was able to easily keep everyone entertained. Highly recommend, especially if you are an animal lover.

We visited The Turtle Hospital after searching for things to do on a rainy day in the Keys. What a neat place! Your visit requires a reservation for the guided tour, so call early; otherwise you might be disappointed. Our guide, Carlie, was excellent. She first did an orientation talk for 30 minutes all about sea turtles and how the hospital treats rescued turtles. We then toured the hospital, observed rescued turtles being treated for various injuries and diseases, and finally fed some. Total tour time was 90 minutes. Take the time to visit this place and appreciate the good work they are doing!

We were able to get reservations via phone just 20 minutes before the presentation, and staff was very efficient checking us in and having us sign the consent form electronically. Our guide Marry was very knowledgeable and passionate about all the information she provided and the turtles themselves, explaining the work the hospital is doing with the turtles, with the ultimate goal to release them back into nature, IF they are healthy enough that they should be able to survive. If they are not able to be released, they make sure the turtles will be well taken care either there or in a zoo. Marry wore a microphone, making sure everyone could hear. The group also only had 22 participants, making it easier to have some social distancing.

this turtle hospital is awesome, you'll learn much about sea turtles and diseases that affect them and why the turtle in this place cannot go back to the ocean, The fee per adult is $27 but it goes back to support this hospital. please make appointment if you have a party more of five people, they give a tour every hour.
They'll do so much for this turtles her that 27 dollars seems nothing for the great cause. you get to see a lot of them and feed them.

We had a tour with Sharon. Because Tropical Storm Eta was coming in later that evening, the tour was just my boyfriend and I. Sharon was so sweet, funny and passionate! She taught us so much about turtles, and you can tell she really loves each of them. She took time tell us each of the turtles’ stories, point out aspects that we would have missed, and just was so cute when talking about them. The tour was totally worth the price! Especially knowing that the money goes towards the hospital’s rescuing, ER/operating and rehabilitation needs. It was the perfect length, with up close interaction with the turtles (ie not behind glass like at a zoo or aquarium).

Awesome little program at the Turtle Hospital in Marathon. This is a real turtle hospital and we even saw a turtle name Pistachio being operated on. He did wonderful and it was amazing to hear the background stories of each turtle as to why they were there. The educator Sara was very knowledgeable and answered any questions you had above and beyond the presentation. Highly recommend this program - lasted about 1 1/2 hours and water is provided which was great on a hot day.

Today, we rented a car in Key West and drove an hour to visit our adopted sea turtle, Bender, at The Turtle Hospital in Marathon. We started in the extensive gift shop and bought all of our souvenirs and gifts for our dog sitters back home. All of the proceeds from the gift shop support the hospital, it’s rescue, rehabilitation, and research programs, and permanent resident sea turtles whose injuries prevent them from being rereleased. There, we also signed up for the $27.00 tour of the facility. The entire fee goes to support the non-profit hospital. Christine, a former teacher and most excellent tour guide, started with a short but fact-packed presentation of the different species of sea turtles, all of them threatened or endangered, and the various injuries and diseases from which they need rescuing (most caused by human carelessness or waste). Then, she introduced us to the hospital itself, where we could watch turtles being treated for their problems. Finally, Christine took us to the tanks to view the many residents of the hospital, both temporary and permanent residents. We were happy to see “our” Bender was doing very well, even though she had lost a front flipper to fishing line and a boat strike caused a permanent injury so she could not be rereleased. It costs only $35.00 a year to adopt a sea turtle at The Turtle Hospital, we get regular updates via email and letters, and it is one of our most satisfying yearly contributions.

Can you just go there or do we need to make reservations?
Written 8 February 2023
Hi, you have to make reservations. I think you can do that on line or call. They limit the number of people in a group.
Well worth going to see the work they do.

When is a good time to go? Do you get to see turtle surgery? My daughter is very interested in learning about this a a career.
Written 25 May 2021
I saw no surgery, but lots of information. I saw many turtles with items on their backs to keep them balanced.

Hi, How can we make a booking ? Phone, mail, on your website ?? Is it necessary to book a long time in advance ? (we come for christmas holidays).
Written 20 November 2019
So how long does a tour last? Do we leave the Turtle Hospital then? Not encouraged to continue the visit?
Written 10 August 2019
The tour is about 90 minutes. You start with a video and presentation, then walk the ER treatment area. Then it's outside to the tanks to see recovering turtles and those in continuing care.

Hi! We want to stop at the Turtle hospital on our way to Big Pine key. We will be pulling a 28ft camper, is there a place to park it while we visit? Thank you!
Written 17 July 2019
Thank you for planning to visit the Turtle Hospital. We have limited parking at the hospital and there is not room for a 28 ft. camper. There is a bank next to us on the south side. I recommend you asking the manager, but they are usually accommodating and most of the time there is space in the bank parking lot parallel to the Turtle Hospital. I hope this is helpful. Safe travels!

Are reservations required to visit the Turtle Hospital?
Written 4 April 2019
Best to make a reservation. No deposit required. We arrived half hour before an 11:00 am tour. We were lucky. Only four spots were left.
