Sterling was our guide and he made every member of the group feel important and listened to. The tour was informative and entertaining. Loved seeing the casks. My second visit and my husband’s first. The gin and whiskey AMAZING! And absolutely have lunch. We’ll be back.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 November 2023
- Helen ASydney, Australia36 contributionsFun Tour ... Great experienceWe went for a visit as it was close to where we were staying and to be frank, didn't expect too much bit it was great. Paid for the full tour, led by a terrific young man, Callum. He was very knowledgeable and injected some fun onto the group on the way. His knowledge of the different spirits and how to get the most from the tasting was eye opening. The tour is $25 with a very stylish tasting at the end, led by the guide. And you get the $25 back on any purchase. Thoroughly recommend this place for a visit and the tour is a must do!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 November 2023
- Mobile584750084324 contributionsA great tour.We had an excellent experience. The tour was excellent - our tour guide was informative and interesting. We particularly thought the bonus $25. was a great incentive to buy a bottle to take home. Highly recommend!Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 November 2023
- Teresa B9 contributionsDon’t miss this gem of a distillery tour!A really in-depth, behind the scenes look into the workings of a small size but big taste distillery. We’ve recently started visiting distilleries during our travels, and this one was a real gem. Callum was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide who seemed to relish the groups off the wall questions and respected the substantial knowledge within the group. One couple were barley “farmers” from the UK and the other couple were clearly experienced ‘tasters’ As a biochemist myself, it was really fun to learn and teach some of the cool chemistry that happens beginning with the yeast and ending with the barrel aging. 👍👍Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 December 2023
- Tourist391600134651 contributionWedding Gift Win!Had a fantastic time here at Cardrona Distillery. I booked a tour for 4 of us followed by lunch as a wedding gift to my husband. It was a hit! Our tour was led by Dan and was just the 4 of us which made for an intimate experience. Learned so much about distilling and enjoyed a fantastic selection of tasters. Our lunch that followed was just as amazing. Definitely a fine dining atmosphere and menu. We shared 4 plates: ceviche, kumara dip w/ Flatbread, bacon butty, and camambert. Would highly recommend a tour!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 December 2023
- Laura M6 contributionsWe spent the day there and it was fabulous! Distillery tour, tasting, fine dining - do it all!A fabulous visit in every way. A warm welcome awaits you, an excellent tour, a very fine malt whisky indeed and the surprise of the additional liqueurs, the restaurant where we enjoyed fine dining and excellent service, all set in a beautiful location. We’re from Scotland so we have enjoyed many drams and many whisky distillery tours and this was up there with the best! Thank you for a wonderful experience.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 December 2023
- Seaside137423017023 contributionsGreat value-for-money tour. The standard tour and tasting was great value for money. Our guide, Stirling, knew how to make it interesting in the time allowed, by explaining what makes Cardrona Distillery unique whilst staying true to tradition. He was also able to field some fairly complex questions from the tour group, which included a professional distiller, a hobbyist (myself) and a whisky shop owner. Clearly more than just a “professional tour guide”, with a detailed knowledge of all elements of the whole operation. I can’t say I liked all the spirits, but I’m not a regular drinker of all of those styles and the whole point is it’s “each to their own”. The variety made it fun. Nice one guys.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 December 2023

- Julie C1 contributionFor souls whisky born, valor doesn't await the passing of yearsSuch a professional, accurate and relaxing experience! The tour was thorough. Special thanks to Dan, our tour guide. For the restaurant part : always "trust the chef"! It was awesome. The whisky is young and the distillery is definitely worth following. My wife bought me a tour as a Christmas present. We live in Christchurch and I work overseas so I was pretty excited to come for a visit.
The venue is great, and the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. The tour was long enough to show you the process in reasonable detail, but not so long as to become tedious. The spirits were delicious and we bought a bottle of scotch before we left.
Unfortunately I can not give 5 stars, my wife made our booking in December and pre paid. Upon arrival after driving all day to get there on time, we were immediately told that our booking had been cancelled as they were full..... We were told that we had been contacted regarding this, which we had not, and it seemed they expected us to just leave. After a discussion with the staff, my wife was able to negotiate a later tour, and we were given complimentary food and drinks.
This would be fine if not for the fact that the tour guide let slip that another group had decided to book for that day, at the time of our original booking, and had bought a cask, which is expensive.
It would seem that we were cancelled, without even being told, having booked almost 2 months prior, simply because someone else showed up and wanted to spend more money.
Great place place though.

This is a must do in the Lakes district! The quality of the entire operation is just so impressive, and our tour guide Kenny was really informative with
delightful humour to make the tour time fly. And it’s FREE- try finding that in Scotland!
The absolute clincher of course is the quality of the different alcohols they craft. Our clan will be back...

This is a must do if you are passing through the Cardrona Valley. Our guide was knowledgeable about the history of the valley and the story towards how Cardrona Distillery came about. Seeing the inner workings of the distillery was a very cool experience and finishing it off with a tasting was even better!!

What a pleasant and really delightful surprise! This wasn't in our plans but I stopped in at the bar at the Cardrona Hotel and was told there was a tasting for only $25 and I could have a tour too. Shocked, really because it seemed too good to be true, I asked my traveling companions if we could go because were were already headed somewhere near. And guess what? We got a two-for-one. Why? Because we were actually headed to the "Bra Fence" and it was right at the entrance to the Cardrona Distillery. What a treat!
Yes, after leaving my bra behind, we drove down the path and parked our car. A gentle walk up the path led us to a lovely 3 building property with a huge rose garden and some tables outside. As we stepped inside, we were immediately greeted by a young man from Nottingham England. He asked us our interest and we said "we are here for the tour". Right away he introduced us to Ben and off we went with a small group of other visitors. Happy to have made the hourly tour right on time. (Tour time 75 minutes).
Ben's presentation and demeanor could not have been more welcoming. His knowledge and especially his patience with the dozens of questions I asked was both kind and incredible. I asked him at the end if I missed anything. His only remark was about a group of plumbers that had come in and asked some rather detailed questions that put him to the real test, lol! Ben shared the history of the owner, Desiree Reid and then guided us toward the beginning steps of whisky making. His delivery had an easy tempo and his voice was effortless to hear, as his storytelling details topped the overall experience.
I am a beginner in whiskey drinking yet there were visitors with me that were well seasoned and completely enamored by the tour. This is for anyone interested in whisky, distilling and the spirit of entrepreneurialism. Just do it! You will be happy you did, especially topping off your moment with a tasting at the end.
Have fun! We sure did! And... we will be back to taste the coming years and world champion winners. We are routing for you!

We planned a visit and could only go on a Monday. I wanted to go on the Family Special tour but sadly this does not run on Mondays. We attended the basic tour which includes a tour of the distillery and some samples of whiskey, gin, vodka and liqueurs at the end. It would be fair to say i have been on better tours with a more informative guides. The Gin and liquers appealed to us. The jewel in this this visit was Linda the duty manager of the day who offered me a chance to complete a tasting of the special casks and in the end i purchased and bottled my own whiskey. I also got to meet one of the owners who was working on the tools out back. Hats off to Cadrona and Linda, thanks for a great day.
I now have a special bottle with my own label.

A must do during a stay in Wanaka. Lunch is superb and exceeded everyone's expectations. 'Trust the chef' is the very best - sit back and enjoy the view whilst the most amazing dishes arrive to surprise you.. and more! Follow up lunch with a Tour of the distillery with fascinating insights and stories. and saving the best to last... you have the privilege to taste samples of the best whisky, gin and liquers... who wouldn't want to buy some to take home. Would recommend booking lunch in advance (and we allowed 2 hours to enjoy lunch at leisure before joining a Distillery Tour.

My sisters and my husband and I visited Cardrona on Monday 19th September. We spoke with the duty manager when we arrived and told her we were driving through to Queenstown from Wanaka and were interested in grabbing coffee and trying some of their liqueur. I think she judged us as not being the spending type and was immediately quite aloof and cold. We were not told there were complimentary tastings or offered one. We ended up ordering one coffee and three double shots of the butterscotch liqueur. The total came to $95. The manager left us as soon as she’d served us and didn’t come back at any point. While we really enjoyed the liqueur, we were a bit taken aback by the price and already felt unwelcome in the way we had been treated.
The only redeeming factor for us (and the reason for the stars) was an absolutely lovely chef who came over and had a chat with us and offered us some croissants that had been left over by a previous group. Had this been the experience the whole way through we would’ve have deemed it a five star experience.
All in all, most of the staff seemed really nice but we felt so incredibly uncomfortable with our experience with the duty manager that none of us are eager to go back. We also think it was bad taste allowing us to buy $90 worth of drinks without informing us of the price or mentioning the complimentary tastings.

Spotted the Distillery whilst on route to the Cardrona Hotel and thought we'd pop in for a look. Got to say they've done a great job on the set up and look of the buildings and its a bit of a standout. Similarly impressed with the detail inside and product display and branded gifts etc. (well marketed)
Got some great service on arrival by friendly staff and was advised they'd be a whisky tasting in 10 minutes. That's were it then went downhill.
We browsed around the main building and outside but no tasting materialised and no further interaction or enquiries from any of the staff, bit like shaggs on a rock.
Also not overly impressed by the exorbitant price point of their whiskies for a 500mm size bottle, way too expensive (don't really care if some are branded as cast strength or limited editions). Similar to some of the Ozzy products down in Tasmania - Lark etc too expensive for what they offer.
Can't really comment on the actual products on offer - as didn't get the chance to sample any.
Bit of a whisky nut and i've been to many distilleries, mainly in Australia and lots in Scotland and this one ended up disappointing.
Missed chance by the staff at Cardrona to gain some fans and get some potentially positive feedback

Thanks for your review. Glad you were impressed with our buildings, display and initial welcome from staff. Our cellar door team endeavour to provide all our visitors with a great experience from the moment they arrive right up until they depart. I'm sorry to hear that yours fell short in this instance with the unfilled tasting and you left feeling disappointed. Visited here, very professional tour run by Pam who gave a full history and explanation of the history and functionality of the distillery. Takes about an hour with tasting as well
the liquors vodka and gin were all excellent, not being a whisky drinker cannot comment on that.
We had some small plates in the attached cafe, salmon was excellent and also had the clams. Really good food.
Recommend this to anyone visiting As a must do experience
They also send product home free of charge

Our group of 6 made a spur of the moment decision to drive out from Wānaka to the distillery. We were lucky enough to be greeted by Clive who is very knowledgeable and passionate about their products. We could’ve waited an hour and taken a guided tour but opted for the complimentary tastings instead. Clive is a true master at describing what the products are, how to savour and enjoy and pointing out subtle differences between similar drinks. Absolutely loved his presentation. We bought several bottles of different products and left feeling we had just been on an adventure. Great atmosphere. Highly recommended.
