Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This has been my favourite part of my travels around New Zealand. The team were amazing at everything! They were very informative and supportive and fun. And the horses were BEAUTIFUL and so gentle, each of them had their own personality which was nice. We were given the opportunity to ride faster if we wanted and got to experience different types of terrain, whilst learning about the surrounding area and the history. It was authentic and such good value for money! I hope to come back again soon as I had the most wonderful day and would seriously recommend this to anyone visiting new zealand :-)

Amazing ride up through the hills, gullies and streams. Thanks to Frenchie for an enjoyable ride and the awesome tour, we had a few laughs along the way. Thanks also to Deb for the six amazing appolosa horses.

I’ve been on many trail rides before - this one was a stand out. From the beginning they made it interesting with some trotting, going over small rivers and up and down hills. The scenery was stunning and Fran was an amazing teacher. We got to see the small cows and go on a good 2 hour trip. Thank you for an unforgettable experience!!

My teenage daughters and I rode here this afternoon and it was wonderful. We are all riders and this was the first commercial trekking I’ve ever done where the presence of beginners has not hampered the more experienced people’s ride. There were several stretches where we were able to canter along the trails through the tussocks, without disturbing the beginners. Our guide was fantastic, the horses were well matched to the riders and the scenery was beyond compare. Highly recommended!

We booked this having been walking for most of the holiday and wanted to do something different. Neither of us are experienced riders, in fact, quite the opposite! However this didn’t deter Wendy or any of her team. On arrival we couldn’t have been welcomed in a more friendly manner. Everyone was helpful and keen to ensure we had a great day. We thoroughly enjoyed the ride. The horses were expertly selected and we were able to ride comfortably whilst enjoying the most amazing countryside. Thank you Jo for being a fantastic leader and giving us such wonderful information about the different flowers and bushes around. This experience has so made our trip for us. Highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to experience something different.

Our family with 7 and 10 year old girls had an absolute blast with Deb and her fantastic team. We are all extreme novices when it comes to riding and everyone was very patient with us. The horses are so gentle, the scenery is to die for and its so incredibly peaceful. We cannot recommend this adventure highly enough.

Escaped crowded Cardrona pistes to Cardrona peak east ridge for morning ski tour and then moved on to the lower slopes for an afternoon horse trek. Highly recommend the ski/ horse riding combo. The horses were amazing and owner Debs and guides Jo and Rachel ensured a memorable end to a wonderful day.

We had a great afternoon trekking with Black Country Saddles in Cardrona. I really enjoyed the Appaloosa horses - originally a mountain bred horse apparently - and that cope with the conditions of the Cardrona Valley. They had a calm temperament and steady footing which meant I could relax and enjoy the ride out, as well as the beautiful scenery. The people running the stables were very nice, laid back and professional, and we managed to fit in a refreshing drink at the nearby Cardrona Hotel garden beforehand too.

It was a sunny day but cold, the mountain was covered with snow. We were all beginners but we enjoyed the 2 hours ride very much. The horses were well trained, walked or jogged as we kicked them. We walked up a slope and then down hill, the scenery was perfect. We were excited and very tired after the ride.
We highly recommend Back Country Saddles to anyone!

We signed up for a 1pm ride via the official website, and the online reservation process was simple, straightforward and really easy.
We arrived much earlier so we spent time enjoying the scenery and snapping away. The experienced Stacy showed us to our horses, and made sure we all were aware of what to do with the horses. Stacy was AMAZING...she happily chatted with us along the way, and kept a careful eye on our youngest (7yo) who was riding for the first time. We arrived at the top for the most beautiful shot and trotted back across pretty little creeks. All in all, we truly enjoyed ourselves and wish we can be back!!
