The Hobbiton Movie Set tour is an essential stop on the itinerary for all visitors travelling through New Zealand, offering an interesting and entertaining experience incorporating the famous film set as seen in The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

Fall in love with the Alexander family sheep and beef farm, just as acclaimed director Sir Peter Jackson did, as you journey through the village, with the mighty Kaimai Ranges towering in the distance. Your guide will then escort you around the set, showing you the intricate detailing, pointing out the most famous locations and explaining how the movie magic was made. You will be taken around the 12 acre set; past Hobbit holes, the Mill and into the famous Green Dragon™ Inn, where you can indulge in our exclusive, specially brewed beverages to conclude your own Middle-earth™ adventure.

If you are a die hard Lord of the Rings fan, this is a must see. It is really cool to see the set from the movie, and hear all about the behind the scenes occurrences regarding the location, build and filming.

Our family loved this tour. I know it’s touristy, but it was such a terrific experience. Our guide, Kelsey, gave us plenty of time to take photos outside the 44 different hobbit holes and was very knowledgeable about the property and the LOTR films. One thing to know is that they are very punctual with this tour. Tours leave from... More

We made the effort of travelling to Matamata from Auckland as a day trip to see the Hobbiton movie set and boy was it worth it! We were impressed by the slick and well run operation of the experience and the wonderful guides that show you around. We had the wonderful Heather (from Scotland), and her care and knowledge kept... We booked this tour at the Rotorua office and opted to drive. We chose the 830 slot and drove about an hour and arrived. You check in at the main office and then your group are put onto a bus then taken to the site on the farm. We've all watched the movies and the boys (7 & 9) instantly... More

I booked this online and everything went very smoothly. We were picked up by bus from the i-site and we were off on our great adventure. The tour guide was very informative and we learnt a lot about the sets and the making of the movies. The only thing is, I was disappointed with the speed of the tour itself.... More

After many years of "we must go and check it out" we finally got around to doing it. $197 later for 2 adults and an 11 year old we book in and go for it. We were told to come 15 minutes early and it would take an hour from Hamilton. It took less than 40 minutes so we ended... More

If doing this tour, definitely book ahead. In peak times, it can sell out, though there is a stand-by line. Six of us went on a great sunny summer day (might not be fun if raining), and our guide Josh was fantastic. TONS of photo-ops and a free drink at the Green Dragon toward the end.

Started out in Rotorua with the bus driver name ov Danny and for the little over hr ride to get to it he kept us well entertained with little tidbits of the area and his funny wit. When we got to the set we had a guide by the name of Emily who was well versed on the set up... More

This tour is very well organised and run. It was really interesting walking around Hobbiton and recognising the locations seen in the movies. The tour guide was helpful and informative and the pace of the tour was nice and easy. The beer at the end was a nice bonus. There is also a nice cafe that makes good coffee. Just... More
