- Pippa HLondon, United Kingdom87 contributionsWorth a stopWorth a stop if you're driving past. There's loads of parking. Would recommend doing the 15 min or so walk down the track marked on the side of the carpark to see the falls from a bit of a distance downstream as it's less crowded and you actually get a better view.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023
- whitey7230 contributionsVery dramatic falls an well worth seeing.Visited Oct 2023 This is a must do, the colour of the water is stunning and the sound is amazing. We did the Huka Falls jet boat which I will write a separate review for but thats well worth doing as well as it takes you right up to the falls and then right the way to the dam at the other where they filmed the Hobbit. If touring the area, it's well worth stopping to see.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 November 2023
- AcinetoAuckland Central, New Zealand23,312 contributionsPowerful wavesWe came by the Huka Falls and the viewpoint to get pictures of some family doing the jetboat ride. We drove the back roads from the Huka Falls jetboat and went to the Huke Falls parking (not the lookout area). This way we actually crossed the bridge and was able to experience the crashing sounds of the voluminous current before it headed down the falls. The blueness of the water was amazing, as was the views of the falls. The walk to the Falls wasn't too far from the car park and it did look like there were a few walking trails around here. It was a nice vantage point if you are looking for someone riding the jet boat.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 February 2024

- Julia @Scrumptious SolentSouthampton, United Kingdom4,298 contributionsA stunning stop with free parkingYou can just pull up in the car park and walk a few hundred metres to see these falls which are simply stunning. If you want you can also do a boat tour down the river or a high speed jet boat which circles very fast next to the falls themselves. Plenty of options for walkers (to go right down to the nearby Aratiatia rapids) or cyclists to follow a similar path. Toilets are situated in the car park and there’s a cafe at the top of the hill by the lookout which you can drive up to (or walk a mile up a steep hill).Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 March 2024
- MouzourisDetroit, Michigan2,095 contributionsWorth stopping byIt was on our way to Taupo lake after we did the jet boat tour. Worth stopping by to take a look. It’s about 5min walk from the parking lot cross the bridge which we missed the first time and we had to drive back after looked at the map on our phone.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 April 2024
- TheLeongOhanaUnited States7,505 contributionsStop On The Way to TaupoAfter Aratiatia Dam we drove over to see Huka Falls. Maps directed us to a small parking lot for an overlook above the Waikato River. This location afforded us the the best full view of Huka Falls albeit from a distance. The second stop was the main parking lot and it was almost half full when we arrived around 11AM. A short bridge allowed us to cross over the river and head to the viewing area. The path was a bit muddy from the recent rains. It was amazing to see and hear the river flow by, get squeezed through the narrow banks and go over the short fall. The water was a unique icy blue. However we could not find any full view of Huka Falls as bushes lined the edge and we needed a selfie stick to lift our phone higher. Overall we spent less than half an hour across both viewpoints.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 June 2024

Great photo opportunities of the birth of the great and mighty Waikato River. Plenty of tourists but plenty of space. Flat and easy walk to see this beautiful waterfall pounding into the river below. Clean and clear waters. Great place to visit for all ages. No charge. If you want, you can do a 2 hour hike through the bush as well. Time to view approx 30 minutes.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 September 2024

The Huka Falls are unique and for any water watchers, you can gaze for hours at the raging waters.
This is one of the ever-decreasing free destinations in NZ. Over the years, they have installed ticket offices and they like to bite hard on your pocket.
The Thermal Park, nearby has a free warm water stream to lay back in - that's also free.

My wife and I stopped by to kill time before a dinner reservation in Taupo. We found the rapid channel bit more interesting and mesmerising than the actual drop, though she couldn’t remember if she’d been there before or not so dare I say it’s not super unique. The toilets which were formerly pay toilets and are now free which is definitely a step in the right direction and makes you feel the country is getting back on the right track. The Car park is right nearby, it’s flat but the path is rocky so not sure if it’s wheelchair accessible but great if you’re lazy. The water has a blue quality to it. Not like blue in a toilet, just a tinge. Sorry I keep mentioning toilets but this place has that effect on you.

My parents live in Taupō and I grew up here. Used to come here a lot as a kid, it is always changing depending on when the lake gates are open or not. Currently due to all the rain the North Island has been having Lake Taupō is extremely high so they are keeping the gates open for longer. The amount of water going over the falls at the moment is just awesome to see! So much power. Easy to access and free.

Did a rafting tour over the falls and
Guide really knew what he was doing, you paddle to move raft but he knew how to position raft to go over some of the bigger falls. The 20 foot drop on the last waterfall was very fun and only a little bit intense though one girl fell out of our raft when we landed (she was fine). You get great pictures going over the 20 foot drop.

Huka Falls is simply a natural wonder, a peaceful environment. The enthusiasm of water in silence. Spectacular. If you are passing through Taupo, you must leave the main road and take only three minutes to reach “Huka Falls”. You should witness the flow of 200,000 liters of water per second. The enthusiasm of the water will give you peace. We definitely recommend it. have a good time…

My wife and I went on a very leisurely and informative boat ride to the falls as part of a 10 day group tour of New Zealand. The captain provided a lot of information about the area and the plant life along the river. When we got to the falls, he spun the boat around quite a few times so every couple could have someone take their photo on the back of the boat with the falls in the background, or take a selfie from the front of the boat.
The reason I said this is was a leisurely boat ride, is because another company provides a jet boat ride up to the falls. It went very fast and even did 360 degree turns at high speed. Definitely not for the faint of heart but great for thrill seekers.

When we were planning our two weeks in Taupo the one thing people said to us was, you must see the Huka Falls. There are so many options for walking along the river, and lookouts from which to see this incredible masterpiece of creation. The power of the ice green water crashing through the gorges. The noise. The beauty of it all, in any weather. When they open the dam gates the contrast from stream to raging torrent is jaw dropping. And all for us to enjoy without any charge. One of the top highlights of our holiday.

If you are in the area, you cannot miss the Huka Falls. The water is so beautiful and powerful. It's an easy walk and park right next to the bridge.
The water is forced down a rock valley and over a fall into the river below. That much water in a small space makes for a spectacular view of gorgeous water.
Once, you look at the water from the bridge, make sure you do the short walk down to where you can see the actual falls. It's really awesome.

This place is too crowded and over-hyped. It's surely nice and unique - I have never seen more light-blue water in my life. But at the same time, it's something where masses of people come and stand behind every centimeter of the fence from the river's side, to take a look at the immersing foamy water. So you can surely enjoy the place, but count also with the crowds.
Connected to the crowds, there is a problem with parking at the times when the damn releases the water from its reservoir. People were parking really everywhere, and a lot of cars were just circling around to catch some free spot after someone who was leaving.

Huka Falls is a memorable sight and is not to be missed. The falls are located on the Waikato River - New Zealand's longest - at a point where the river is funnelled through a narrow gap in the rocks. While the drop is in itself not that great, it is the massive surge of water that is so impressive. There is a lot of foam and a lot of spray and the air bubbles in the churning maelstrom give the water a brilliant aquamarine hue. The sign says about 200.000 litres of water plunges over the falls every second, enough to fill five Olympic pools in a minute. We took the track through the bush from the carpark above the falls, which was quite an easy walk and took about 10 minutes each way. It gave us additional viewpoints from the other side of the river to those at the falls itself. Lots of birdlife along the way, too.
