Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a lovely place to stop for a couple of hours. There is a nice park at the bottom and the road to the castle is fairly easy. However, do not drive a motorhome up to the castle. Even though there is parking at the top, the road gets fairly narrow and there are a lot of overhanging trees.

This place has some of the best views in CT. You drive up to the "castle", its a tower. The tower you walk up these metal stairs a few flights, then it opens up to some amazing views. The tower sits along a steep cliff. This is also in Hubbard Park which is a beautiful park. Great place to visit anytime of year. If you are visiting the area and its in the cooler months bring a coat.

Second try. I was here in July on a Monday at noon -the gate was closed & I waited an hour and a half to see if it would open so I could drive up . Nope. No sign, no explanation. I drove over an hour to get here; I have a heart issue so I can’t walk over 3.5 miles up the road to the castle.
Today I thought I’d try again. I’m a photographer & really wanted to see the view. Gorgeous weather , thought there’s no way they’d do it again. Sunday, noon, gate locked. So disgusted with the state or whoever is in charge of this park. You could put up a sign saying is it just today or what!!
Don’t bother unless you’re young & healthy.
I won’t be back because there’s no way to find out if the actual road is open. The castle is open but that doesn’t help me. I can’t get to it.

We went this morning with my kids and my niece and nephew (Ages 2, 4, 4, and 6) with the intent of playing on the playground for a little bit and then driving up to the castle. My son loves castles and was really looking forward to seeing the castle. Playground was great - lots for the kids to do. However, when it was time to go visit the actual castle, the road was closed and we could not go. When we first arrived, I called the Parks and Rec department of the town to ask where the road was to go up and what time it opened. The road was right by the playground, but it was not open at 10 like she said. We played until 10:40 and the road was still not open. A disappointment for sure.

Castle Craig can be reached by road inside Hubbard park. The winding scenic route takes you past a reservoir and then gently climbs to Chaucer Peak. Once at the summit you can enter the midevile tower and climb the winding stairway to the top.
The views from the top of Castle Craig are breathtaking and on a clear day you can see Long Island Sound and even Long Island NY!

I've been walking, hiking, and running here numerous times. It's especially nice in the spring and fall, summer can be a bit too warm for my liking. The road up to the Castle is 3 miles one way, it gets pretty steep halfway through.
The annual Castle Craig run in January is a blast! I highly recommend it if walking/running in the cold is your thing (yes, I'm one of those crazies who wants to get fresh air and sunshine even if I risk losing some extremities).

We took the Metacomet Trail which starts from route 71 all the way to the castle. The trail run cross a couple reservoirs, and is quit challenging at some part. But the view and the exercise we got totally worth it.

Took about 15 min to drive to castle, there is a split almost at top of hill that is unmarked - go left (not straight). Nice reservoir, playground, pool, pavilions, etc at park below. Short climb up the castle and great views all around - worth visiting.

What a perfect place to go hiking! If you'd like to drive up, the views are incredible and there's plenty of parking closely to the castle. The views are beautiful. When we visited, there was an Italian ice vendor, so there are definitely treats to be had. Definitely climb to the top of the castle (it's not that many steps). Dogs are allowed to climb the castle too!
I've lived in CT forever and only visited for the first time this year. It's definitely a sweet spot and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a nice, outdoor activity.

We drove the road to the castle. If you are going to hike it bring lots of water, it's a trek. Great view from the top. Nice parking area at the top. Not a lot of space to have a picnic but still a neat location.

Planning head to Hubbard park this month and wanted to ask how steep the white blazed trail leading up to the tower is. I'm less concerned with it being too strenuous and more concerned with my own fear of heights. I don't mind being at a high elevation, I just tend to get fearful of narrow trails that have large drops beside them. Anyone have insight into that white spur that shoots straight up? If it is a "scarier" ascent, are there any trails that can be done up top if parked at the tower itself?

Hi. Planning to go there, does anyone know if I can take a small dog with me? Is that park dog friendly?

Not really sure about the question but it is a very nice place to go and see the fall colors. Be prepared to walk almost 2 miles up as they closed the gate I believe last week of October or 1st week of November. You'll be better off checking the website.
