Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I know Cumbrae is a small island but I wouldn't call this place museum/aquarium. We found the place closed even if it said reopen 13.30 (was 13.45), so we had a look around and we got chased by staff and at that point we could get in. Paid £2.50 to see two rooms, one with nothing much but a good film about sea life and the other with few fish tanks. Not a lot of variety, lovely creatures, ok, but the place is not great.

Visited as part of a nostalgia trip to the island.
The original site has been carefully updated with a small display of the history of its key players and their role in developing marine biology as a science.
The live displays are well kept and interesting in their own way with a good balance between adult and child-friendly information.
Excellent (and v cheap).

Everyone likes to see the fluffies of the world, but the undersea creatures displayed here are amazing, as well as showing the exceptional history of exploration from Millport

The welcome at the reception is very friendly. The shop has nice souvenirs and drinks/ice cream. Everyone is very keen to help youngsters learn more about the sea and what lives in it. The Museum and Aquaruim are really interesting and there are "hands on" sinks with crabs, starfish etc to be examined.

Having not cycled around Isle of Cumbrae before, I decided to take my son during his school break. We dusted off the bikes, packed a lunch and headed for the train to Largs to get the Loch Shira across.
I spent a bit of time researching things to do and with my son having an interest in nature and wildlife I thought this would be a good place to visit during our time on the Island. Disregarding the negative reviews of the aquarium and museum I had read, I wanted to visit all the same, I knew he would love it!
It's not a fancy aquarium with high tech equipment and tropical species. Instead it's a perfect representation of marine and aquatic life found in and around the Firth of Clyde, it truly is a local education of nearby sea life. It's informative and educational. There are activities to try out and learn more about fish of a wider species and the constraints on fishing globally, where some of our fish come from and what's good practices of fishing and not.
The museum is centred around the life work studies of David Robertson who gave much to the study of the local marine aquatic life and displays certain artifacts of his expeditions.
It wasn't expensive to get in £3.50 for me and my son. I enjoyed the hour or so we spent there and my son enjoyed it more.
So long as you are not expecting an all singing all dancing aquarium but instead want to know more about the history and analysis of the local marine aquatic life, definitely pay it a visit.

This is a little gem, well worth a visit. We saw it on the visitor's map but had difficulty finding it. There needs to better signage on the island. It used to be called Robertson's Museum & Aquarium but has recently been renovated and is still undergoing modernisation. It only cost us £2 each for both the museum and the aquarium, both of which are interesting. The aquarium's aim is to show the indigenous marine life around the island and this is being built up gradually. There is a small shop too. The lady at the reception was particularly helpful and friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Would recommend (if you can find it!).

This museum is undergoing renovations, but the accompanying accommodations are up and running. The rooms are clean and all offer on suite bathrooms. Many of the rooms are new and more are being built. The facility offers classes and has wonderful well equipped meeting rooms and work spaces for families and group visits. There is a well stocked library, and a lovely art gallery stocked by an artist in residence. 3 meals a day are served in your very reasonable room rates.

I have been coming to Millport since I was a kid but I always make time to visit the centre as I find there's always new attractions and something to take away from each trip. If I bring any guests to the island I recommend that they too visit as it is a different experience from these larger aquariums, more personal and intimate.

we found this almost by accident. Girl on reception, very bright, cheery and helpful . Grandson loved doing the light hearted quiz on way round and got his face painted for a £1. Entry is only £2.50 for adults and £1 for kids. ITs not a big tour, but enjoyable

Hi, Are dogs - Yorkie - allowed in when we carry him?

There is a service bus that drops you off and picks you up right next to the aquarium and museum. The service bus runs both ways, so you can stop on your way from the ferry or on the way back from the centre of Millport. The bus service connects to the ferry and until the end of August will run every 15 minutes.
Hope that helps!
