I joined a BWV trip with 14 people and had fun on the Mendocino Coast & Albion River. Utterly superb 3 days in mid-September. We were shown how to stay safe while heading out through the (small) surf at Van Damme State Park and then paddled through a series of sea caves and archways, timing it with the swells. Some of us nailed the "pour-over", riding our kayaks through a seaside rock garden sloshed by the backwash & incoming waves. (A quick salty variety of whitewater.) Tons of fun, even if a few kayakers capsized and most (like me) just watched and encouraged th others. There were pelicans, cormorants, oyster catchers, otters & seals sharing the sea. We camped in tents at the riverside, under clear skies that revealed the Milky Way, and were awakened by the smell of brewing coffee and a yummy breakfast. Then we paddled with the tide upriver and observed river otters, seals, and multitudes of birds, and took a picnic with us. The trip's naturalists were all well informed and enthusiastic. I appreciated learning new skills in the kayak, getting individualized pointers, and always felt safe. The staff is very professional and alert. Kim, a veteran water woman, is calm and unflappable. And she has a sense of humor! She anticipated all our needs and was careful to accommodate people's dietary requirements and quirks: gluten-free, keto, Vegan, whatever.Dinner was delicious. This was a well-planned itinerary and the group was eclectic & enjoyable. Cannot wait to sign up for another kayak trip. I have explored Elkhorn Slough twice with BWV in a sit-on-top and a sit-in, a single and a double. This is a first-rate experience. Highly recommended.

We had a group of 11 for my husband's birthday. Luke was our guide. We're a fun group so glad Luke got our humor. He was very informative. Shared some great stories of things he's seen. We got to see a baby otter sitting on his momma's belly. Saw an otter hitting a shell up against a rock to open it. It was a great overcast day. I was told the slough is not as rough so that's why I picked it. Only a couple wakes from boats coming into dock. We had the longer heavier kayaks that are a lot more difficult to tip over. Better than the shorter yellow ones we saw. I'd definitely like to go again just to see the cute sea otters and the sea lions.

This was my second trip to view the incredible wild life in Elkhorn Slough and Monterey Bay with Blue Water Ventures. I enjoyed the first trip so much that I wanted to include my family this time. Our naturalist and guide, Kim Powell (also the owner) provided an awesome trip. We saw otters with their young, sea lions, harbor seals, as well as many birds. Kim provided facts and information on all of the wild life found in the Slough. She is an awesome guide. She also has a trained team of guides that work with her who are knowledgeable and very safety conscious. We really enjoyed our day and highly recommend Blue Water Ventures for Kayaking in the Slough as well as whale watching trips into the bay.

We recently can back from a magical trip from Baja with Kim’s company and I am still reeling with all that we saw: flying mobula rays, dive-bombing pelicans, shy turtles, curious sea lions and their pups, and most of all the magical gray whales!!! The last half of the trip was like whale watching on steroids. The campgrounds and food provided by the outfitter, Mar y Adventuras, was superb. Kim is such a fun guide and knowledgeable naturalist. Nellie and Roman, the other guides, were also super knowledgeable and friendly. The 10 day trip to Baja was very well organized and all the meals were provided. You didn’t really have to plan much of anything. Just pack what you need and go. Baja is a very special place and we were very lucky to see and experience what we saw. We were fortunate to have Kim and her crew navigating us through this grand place. Check out this trip and her other local kayaking excursions!
