Cape Town has Table Mountain, but also a brewery. HPCA has THE HIMALAYAS. We had tickets in the southern stand, and in between every ball you would just look up at this massive range of mountains, right on top of the ground. Our tickets were in the "Club Lounge", right on top of the Southern Pavilion. Loads of seats with good legroom. Behind the seats is a glass-fronted and -backed room, maybe 8 metres deep which runs the width of the seating. For £20, there was, in addition to your seat, tea, coffee and biscuits all day, a massive buffet lunch which ran for a couple of hours, which then became "High Tea". Both had a wide range of excellent Indian and Western food. Soft drinks, complimentary. There was a bar selling beers and spirits. There were signs on the wall saying when each form of sustenance would be available. Not sure why, because they weren't even vaguely adhered to. The queue at the start would be massive, but I found a separate table with fantastic dips which had very few people near it. Then I would fill up on lunch proper an hour later. No regular stewards in the Club Lounge: sophisticated young ladies in bright saris and a bloke straight out of Bollywood central casting. Unfortunately, they were all under instructions not to let a single morsel of food, or centilitre of beverage into the seating area. And they took their jobs very, very seriously. Bit silly really.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 March 2024
- RonakHVAhmedabad, India49 contributionsIndia vs England: Test Match" March 2024If you are that Cricket lover who likes to go to the stadium to watch the game live, this is a must visit stadium for you. I have been to this venue twice, first in 2013 and now in 2024. I bought Pavilion Terrace tickets for the 5th India vs England Test (March 2024) recently and the view I have had in over 50+ matches I have seen live from various stadiums. This is not a huge stadium like that of Ahmedabad or Kolkata so it never gets crowded, The stadium is good 7 odd KMs from Mcleod Ganj where there are many options as far as hotels and hostels are concerned. You can get the buses or cabs from Mcloed to HPCA Stadium. Cab typically charges 400 to 600 Rs. Buses don't have best of the frequencies but costs a lot less at about 25 Rs to drop you at Dharamshala Bus Stand which is about 3 KMs from the stadium from where you can walk or take another cab pr a bus. Staying in Dharamshala is the best option but hotel tariffs may be higher during match days. The best ticket to buy is surely of a Pavilion Terrace. It gives you a straight view and is just above the players dressing room. Since the stadium is small, you feel being very close to the action. My personal recommendation would be not to buy tickets of seating in North and East directions as you won't be facing the mountains. So Pavilion Terrace (in South) or West stands are the best. Also day matches are the best to watch as watching night games won't make sense as you can't see the beautiful backdrop it has to offer. Also late night going back to your accommodation can be challenging and expensive. You can go and eat some Maggi, Omelette outside the stadium to avoid paying huge amount for having substandard food in the stadium.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 March 2024
- Jane C3 contributionsBrilliant stadiumViews amazing! Fantastic ground. The staff need to be mindful of people needing sunscreen. Far too many people cutting in front of you wanting to sell, chai, crisps, ice cream, samosas and whatever else they could. It wasn’t just every half hour it was every 10 minutes.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 March 2024
- Chris WPenarth, United Kingdom379 contributionsGreat Location for Cricket.Amazing location to watch cricket. The backdrop of the Himalayas is stunning. I went to watch England get thrashed in their final test match in India in March; the view made up for the disappointment of the cricket result. The vendors in the ground who come into the starting area to sell you drinks and snacks etc are too numerous, constantly in the way of the viewing experience. Other than that, it was fantastic.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 29 March 2024

What a place , did not visit to watch a match but just to see the stadium. Beautiful is the word to describe the place. They give you access to one of the stands at INR 30 fo few it is worth few selfies for me it was lot of emotions and hope that I will get to see an international match at this stadium one day.

The backdrop of the stadium is something which you will carry forever. The amazing experience of watching nature and cricket at the same time will be enchanting for most Indians. This can be a great mood enhancer for someone who wants to feel better.

Came here to watch the cricket. Yes it is possibly the most beautiful rocket ground ever but…. Stupid rules at the gate meant we had our sun cream taken off us and there was none available to buy inside. They wouldn’t even allow us to apply cream as they had confiscated it. Even if we had pre applied it would have been insufficient for a whole days play in the sun with no shade. We ended up standing in stairwell for shade. Also no essential water allowed in and you have to rely on and trust water fountains which is a huge no no for tourists.

To develop a venue which can host IPL matches is great that too if it is in the hills. Wish had gone there to watch a match not as a tourist. A must visit though you may feel that the ground and boundaries look much smaller than what one sees on Television screens.

The stadium is surrounded by beautiful snow clad mountain peaks. The clubhouse / media center / Galleries are very tastefully done. Though a small stadium, but it's beauty scores very high.

Situated at almost 7000 feet above sea level and having snow-capped Dauladhar range of Himalayan chain in background, HPCA stadium is the highest and most beautiful cricket ground in India. It makes Dharamshala a must visit during the IPL season.

As soon as I entered the stand from Gate Number 5, I witnessed an impeccable sight with lush green grass, multi colored seating and a stadium which promises the best view ever. The Dhauladhar Mountain Range on 3 sides and great weather makes it a picture perfect place. I started imagining the IPL matches and cricketing legends who have played here under lights.

The best way to reach is to land at Dharamshala, However the flights are via Delhi and the ticket from delhi to dharamshala is really very expensive. Alternatively you can land at Delhi and take a Night service Volvo bus from delhi to Dharamshala.

On a no-match day, what is the procedure for getting entry into the stadium? What are the near-by points that can be covered in the same day?
Written 23 May 2018
I stayed at Mcleodganj and covered these places in one day (although I spent another day at Naddi and Stadium ):
1. Naddy view point
2. St Jhon in Wilderness Church
3. HPCA Stadium
4. Gopalpur Zoo
5. Norbulingka Institute
6. Palampur
7. Saurav Vana Vihar
HPTDC Restaurant at Palampur is a nice one and you can have food there. On way we also visited Jai Matadi Temple.
Yes , stadium is open to all except during big matches like test, IPL etc and you have to walk about 500 meters from the parking place.

Which stand in HPCA has the best view of the pitch and himalayas?
Written 27 November 2017
All stands I believe offer stunning view of the snow clad Himalayas but as a match spectator only you may have access to all. For the tourist, only one stand is open but it too offers fascinating views.
