About
We bought a building in Central Lower Hutt to be our new cat cafe and caretaker residence. It is just taking longer than expected to get it built. We do have a tenant on the ground floor, Cafe Soleil, which serves delicious Mediterranean influenced freshly-cooked and counter food (including vegan and gluten free options), and barista made coffee with a friendly smile. support for them is support for Neko Ngeru.

The cafe was not what we expected at all. It wasn't just the decor that was grey, the cafe has no personality and the people were grey. We were being watched the entire time as though we were going to bundle a cat into our bag. There were hardly any people there (which is a good thing for this kind of experience) and yet the atmosphere was sterile. We were given a little sign which has a time on it for when you are due to leave. Ours was 10 minutes short of the hour (we had booked an open arrival time as we were getting the bus). Unfortunately this wasnt explained to guests and at one point the security guard host seemed convinced that someone was in the room who should have left at 2pm (and apparently this was likely us as our coats happened to be near an anonymously left sign). we couldn't relax whilst we were there. You need to have a level of trust with your clients that the kind of people who want to pay for the privilege of sitting with some cats are not out to harm them. standing above people whilst they are supposedly chilling on bean bags is not conducive to a nice atmosphere. Also the fact that the rules are shoved down your throat at every opportunity..on the tv screen, at the door, by the security guard host, in the menu. It's really not necessary! Fair enough intervene if someone is acting inappropriately but hawking over people is not pleasant. We won't be recommending or coming back. A shame as a cat cafe should be a fun, rewarding colourful experience, especially when you've sat on a bus for 45 minutes.

I stopped in briefly yesterday to grab a coffee while my wife visited the cats. It was our first time and was greeted with great service and coffee. We might go again today.

Went to find a last minute Christmas present for our kitty Jasper and fully admit was looking at all the kitty options with no real clue what to get when one of the owners very helpfully came to my rescue and pointed out a feather chaser. Jasper loves this thing.
He possibly loves it too much as every morning he is miaowing at me to get up, not to feed him biscuits but to play chasies with the feather toy. Admittedly this may be my fault as I think I was the one who first one morning played a couple of games before work. Anyway, he absolutely loves his toy, so a very big thanks :)

This unique place is great if you like cats and would like to help contribute to their wellbeing and future. Lovely friendly people run this place. Glad they exclude children under 7 as most frighten the cats too much in a small area. Nice food.

My partner and I are Wellington based but frequent the cat cafe on a semi regular basis. The cafe is broken in two sections. The cafe counter with a couple of tables, and a double door system that leads to the main play/cat room with more seating. The double door system helps stop you from accidentally letting a cat out of the play room, and also allows you to use hand sanitiser on + wipe feet prior to entering.
--
Plenty of cat toys in the play room to try and catch the attention of the cats, fans + drinking bowls in the corners to keep them cool, and plenty of natural light from the front + side windows + skylight overhead, as well as climbing shelves + sleeping boxes around the walls for the cats to explore.
--
The food is predominantly snacks/light meals, as well as a range of teas + the usual coffee/cold drink options, but not a full kitchen service with brunch/lunch etc, and booking (12hrs in advance) on their website is recommended, but if they've got space you can often just drop in and ask, ring, or message them on Facebook to enquire.
--
Some cats are worker cats that live there full time, and others are available to adopt. If you fall in love with any of the cats up for adoption you can apply to adopt, although applicants are vetted for suitability to ensure they go to a good home. On the way in you can also view range of merchandise (pretty much all cat related/themed) that's available to buy.The cat window beds in the play room are also available to buy, and popular with both of our two cats. The second of which was actually an adoption from them, but we still go back to visit and spend time with the cats anyway. :)
Also make sure to read the booklet on the table - it gives you a history of the cafe, as well as detailing the rescue organisations they work, as well as giving you a bio on the cats that are in the cafe. ;p

Thanks so much for this detailed review. It should really help people know what to expect from the cat café! We always love seeing you and hearing about how Salem is doing.

We live close to this place so I get to see the cats through the window when passing a lot. When I went in over a year ago I was quite surprised at how little it had to offer, outside of beautiful, beautiful cats. I did kind of expect it would be cafe life. But really the coffee/tea and pies (yes pies when we went!) aren't really what you'd go for. You have to bear that in mid. Just go to chill with some cats for a while. It's pretty clean, and they really are lovely!

We liken our visit to a session of detention at school
Our kids were excited and talking loudly. The lady was rude and very forceful about asking one child to lower her voice - tried to insist she practice her ‘inside’ voice before entering the room. ‘No you can’t get the hand sanitiser, your mum must do it'... the kids would probably do it better than the adults because they're taught such things at kindy and school!
Everything we did was wrong, we couldn't relax and if we have to be really picky, the coffee was lukewarm - I would have ignored this had the staff been friendly. No marshmallows with the fluffy's! (ok not a biggy but it seems to be a practiced tradition in Lower Hutt)
Eventually the manager left (I assumed she was the manager because the accent on the phone matched the person) and was replaced with a much nicer person....
I hope you keep that staff member because you need her, some niceness to smooth out the abruptness.
We get that you have a business to run, some courses in Kiwihost might help your attitude. It was almost like you thought we were going to be trouble because we had children with us and that is really disappointing.
An hour was long enough, we couldn't wait to leave.

We won't be back - and we wouldn't recommend.

We went to the cat cafe today with a group of friends. What a great place, comfortable, warm, friendly, clean and lovely cats to be purred.
The coffee was great, and the kids enjoyed the pies.
The hour passed by too quickly so I will be back to spend more time hanging out with the cats.
Lovely people.
