When looking into Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan) it is certainly overwhelming. This is a vast land mass with many things to see. Nila made seeing it all seamless! From the planning phase through to the execution, Nila was active in recommendations and helping to build a trip that we would love. She worked for months with us iterating on itineraries to make sure the price and activities aligned with what we wanted.
We worked our way from southern Kalimantan through to the East. From the beginning we were picked up from the Airport by a very professional guide and a driver. The guides throughout our trip were a wealth of knowledge who were very personable, spoke excellent English and are very genuine people. As we travelled to different provinces we met new local guides from each area that all had a unique knowledge of the region. The guides that we had through out were all amazing people and we learned so much about the culture and the way of life as well as experiencing it first hand with them. It would have been impossible to travel the full route without their expertise.
Kalimantan has a aged infrastructure that has been overused by many industry vehicles leaving behind rough tight highways. Nila had arranged transportation throughout the trip. Each driver was confident, calm and collected along the drive. It takes an experienced driver who knows the roads day and night to travel the major distances. We felt safe in the hands of the drivers that we had.
We also enjoyed 2 sleeper boat excursions where the crew was friendly welcoming and all around great to travel with. They all had strong relationships with Nila and took great care of us.
Overall we really enjoyed the experience of Kalimantan. We could not have seen this part of the world without the hard work of Nila and her local guides. We would recommend her company to anyone wanting to experience such a different and important part of Indonesia, and can’t wait to do it again!

I contacted Kalimantan Tour Guide (KTG) with a travel request:
Could you please organise a tour up the Sungai Mahakam (River) as far as possible for a period of less than one week?
Nila Warti (KTG) came back very quickly with a suggested itinerary in a very professional manner.
My tour guide AJ (Awang Jumri) was fantastic! Excellent english and a true ambassador for his region and country.
The tour visited a number of villages including Maura Muntai, Tanjung Isuy and Ujoh.
I had many, many memorable experiences during my six day tour and I was impressed with how KTG also utilised local village guides to further extend my knowledge of the local area, foods, customs. A special call out to Randy (Renddiy) who looked after us at Ujoh.
I thoroughly recommend you contact Kalimantan Tour Guide before considering all travel within Borneo. Excellent, professional outfit with great guides.

Met with Nila - a good and kind person who helped arrange a two night trip from Samarinda into the forest to see river dolphin, wildlife and birds. Your guide Innal was patient and knowledgeable - and has friends everywhere who were lovely to meet. Also met with some of the team of ykrasi.org - definitely worth supporting. You can be confident to book your trip with Kalimantan Tour Guide and you can trust Nila and her team absolutely.

We’ve had 5 amazing days around Balikpapan and on Mahakam river, arranged by Nila and guided by enthousiastic guide AJ.
We were supposed to go to Kutai NP for 2 days first, but because the ranger station was suddenly unavailable for tourists, Nila arranged several tours in the area north of Balikpapan. We visited a beautiful longhouse in Pampang village, had an amazing boat trip on Black river, spent the night in the beautiful Samboja Lodge, visited Orang Utan and Sunbear sanctuaries, walked in the Wain river protection forest and made another beautiful boat trip at the mangrove centre. After these 2 days we went on a 3 days/2 nights river cruise with a lovely houseboat on Mahakam river. So much to see as the houseboat takes you upstream. Delicious meals were cooked and served along the way. The tour in a motorised canoe from the colourful village Muara Muntai to Ohong creek and over lake Jempang was a really nice experience and the longhouse in Mancong was beautiful. On our last day in Kalimantan, Nila took us to a local market and let us taste all kinds of fruit and showed us many other ingredients of the delicious dishes we tasted during our holiday. Thanks Nila for all your effort and for the wonderful 5 last days of our holiday in Kalimantan.

We asked Nila for a tour just two days in advance and it still was amazing and we got to see everything we asked for. The organization and the tours were perfect.
We asked to see the mangroves and the jungle. For the mangroves we went to the mangroves center at Balikpapan and did a boat tour, we even saw some proboscis monkeys. Afterwards we went to the Kutai Nationalpark and stayed at the ranger station for two nights. There we did four jungle treks with one of the rangers. All four were amazing, the late afternoon into night time trekking was really special. Everyone at the camp was really helpful and nice, the food was good too.
We didn't asked for it, but Nila gave us a trip through Balikpapan too, showing us the markets and the harbour and afterwards we went to the jungle close to Balikpapan for a short track there too.
Overall we had a great time and Nila was there to help with everything. The guides and rangers were very knowledgeable and we saw and learned so much.
The price was, compared to other providers reasonable and since they work with local communities which take care of the mangroves and the jungle, the money is well invested.

Our trip to Kalimantan, really exceeded our expectations. We were immersed in the beauty of nature, from the Black (mirror) River, to the Mangrove area, the Fisherman village and Fish markets and Forest. They were all so different and all stunningly beautiful.
Because we were unsure about what was available for a short 2 day trip , we left the organization up to Nila and her team, trusting local people with their expert knowledge to show us the best. Evin, Yusa, and Nila we had a fabulous time. Makasih !
We left Kalimantan, having sponsored a baby Orangutan, and in complete awe of the Orangutan Sanctuary, and with a renewed drive to protect nature for human survival.

After reading reviews on Trip Advisor, I decided to contact Nila to arrange two 2 day tours. Nila was very easy to deal with and quickly responded to any questions. Our guide for the 2 days was Evin. Evin is such a great tour guide - fun, easy going and very knowledgeable. We did a city tour of Balikpapan which included a trek at Wain River Protection Forest and a boat trip at the Mangrove Center. The trek was great and the trek guide was very informative. The boat trip was also great and we say several proboscis monkeys. The tour for the next day we went to Samarinda. Here we went to a Mosque and Buddhist Temple and also to Pampang Cultural Village.
We thoroughly had a fantastic time on both day trips.
Thank you Nila for organising and a big thank you to Evin!
I certainly recommend using this tour company.

Excellent one day tour to Samboja lodge with Nila and her team. I contacted Nila several months out to reserve the tour as we had a specific date in mind. Nila was very responsive on email to questions / requests.
The tour itself was great getting to see orangutans and sun bears up close in the wildlife rehabilitation centre. This was followed by a primary forest hike in the Borneo jungle for about an hour or so and then a boat cruise in the mangroves where we able to spot the famous proboscis monkey.
Pickup was at 6:30am and we were back at our Baikpapan hotel by 18:30pm so it was a fairly long day but very doable and well worth it if you do not want / can’t stay overnight at the lodge.

Nila organised for us an amazing tour to Kutai National park. The contact with her was very fast and easy. The reason we preffered Kutai National parc is because you can really see the Orang-Utangs in the wild and it's more of the beaten path. And the long journey for the two days in the jungle was so worth it. Nila organised the day before a nice tour in Balikbapan. She took us to a local sate place, which was amazing. The sunbear sanctuary wasn't really for us but we did like our boat tour through the mangrove.
The next day we went to Kutai.
Its a long bumpy journey to get there, but our guide Iwan and our driver Yunos tried to make it as comfortable as possible
Eventually in the jungle we were the only tourists staying at the ranger camp with Heri and Ipe our hosts. Ipe cooked amazing food and sambal and Heri was an amazing ranger. Besides the great vibe there was around the camp we saw so many orang-utangs from up close. Because the camp is build around fruit trees you even have the chance of seeing them around the camp if you're lucky like we were. I think Awang told us we had a absolute record of 17 encounters in two days. We were very lucky and we realise you can't plan nature! That said the jungle is still an amazing place to wander through and to wake up surrounded by the sound of rain and the birds in the jungle. Heri showed us special tries, mushrooms and all kinds of insects and other animals that he spotted. He is truly a great ranger and Awang is so fun as your guide. The whole trip was amazing!
A big thank you to Nila, Awang, Heri, Ipe & Yunos. It was a trip of lifetime!

Hi! I am wondering about traveling to Kalimantan to learn about palm oil production. I am an economics student studying the effect on local economies. Would you be able to arrange something like that? If so, what are your rates?

Plan to spend 5 to 6 days in Balikpapan. Interest in photography and eco tour but age is a barrier to trekking. Any day tours with nice scenery and minimum trekking ?
Written 9 November 2016
We did the one day tour and according to my phone we did a total of 10km gentle walking during our 12 hr day out. We did the orangutan sanctuary, jungle trek and the mangrove forest in one day. You do not need to be fit to do this but there was uneven ground.
