About
We are a volunteer run heritage railway established in 1997 and open to the public since 2011. We have been closed to the public due to Covid restrictions since December 2019 but reopened on Sunday 25th July 2021 from 10am - 4pm. We will be open Sundays from July - December and then reopen Easter 2022. We are currently unable to operate trains but have a museum, restored Station Master's Office and plenty of rolling stock including historic the Victorian locomotive 910 which is part of the National Collection. We will be offering guided tours of the site on open days and have a fully stocked shop with a wide range of model railway items, books, childrens toys, Gibsons puzzles and much more. Our catering facilty is currently unavailable until our toilet refurbishment is completed. From Easter 2022 we will have fully accessible disabled toilets and apologise that we cannot provide full facilities until then. We plan a Christmas Fayre for Sunday 4th December 2021.

As always you get a great welcome. Things have been difficult with Covid etc but starting to get back to normal. All the staff and volunteers have worked really hard while sticking to the regulations.
The shed tours are very informative whether you are an expert or just interested.

What a gem, great to see that so much of the best of the history of this country (its railways and the accompanying ingenuity and craftmanship) now has so much future potential to be appreciated

Thank you so much for your kind review and we are now open to the public again after the easing of lockdown restrictions. We are open on Sundays from 10am - 4pm with shed tours on the half hour. We are not currently running trains as we need to get our locomotives recertified. Please check our facebook and website for the latest news.

We went on a booked tour of the sheds and current carriage restoration projects. It was lovely to be able to go round again and even lovelier to catch up with all that has been going on. Staff are so welcoming, knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about the railway. What makes it is their desire to share this railway with all those who visit rather than seeing them as an annoying requirement. We look forward to seeing you all again soon 😀

Worth a visit: amazing project run by volunteers with passion and knowledge. A real feel for what the station might have been like all those years ago before the line was dismantled. Lots to see and learn: restored carriages and engines, museum, shop, buffet carriages. Very worthwhile initiative to support, thank you.

Excellent guided tour of the railway maintenance shed to view the work being undertaken on various wagons and coaches. The museum and shop were also interesting. Altogether a great visit.

Every visitor is welcomed and invited to look around. Questions about the site, locomotives etc are encouraged. Barras the station cat is usually around and appreciates a stroke.

Worthwhile tour, knowledgeable and friendly folk, really interesting to learn about the history and restoration of the rail, coaches, engines and station, tied into the local area too.
Very good social distance procedures and a trip out come rain or shine.

Had such a lovely visit to Stainmore Railway Company today, the locomotives themselves are such incredible machines and so lovingly cared for by the expert staff. There are some exciting restorations afoot so we are very much looking forward to returning when they are fully up and running again!
