Another nice church in Portugal but this one you can pay to go behind the scenes and see up close the "black Madonna" and some creepy prosthetic limbs. Who knew? Not your average church attractions.

Sheriff Dom Fuas Roupinho (and perhaps a Templar too), was chasing a deer up a hilltop in 1182, when the Madonna saved his life... .

Very nice old church right in the middle of the old town square. The ceramic frescoes and the altar are absolutely amazing. Parking is possible in the small street near the church with a bit of luck. Bring a good camera for the visit.

When in O Sitio, its worth stopping here. A well preserved old church on a huge open square. Inside, it is very ornately finished, and looks stately. There was an entrance fee to go upstairs, but we did not do that

If your in the square in the upper village of Sitio take a few minutes to enter the church and marvel at the ornamentation. Like many in Portugal, lavish devotions have made the interior of this small church a feast for the eyes. It has...More

Inside this church is so ornate and even on busy days only a few tourists ventured in. It is worth taking the time to explore.

This is the great thing about Portugal; every town has a beautiful church with lots of history, ornamentation and religious significance to show off. Stop in to admire the art and the devotion. No need to stay long or to make it a specific destination.

It is centrally located in the main square so easily found. I wish I'd had more time to explore the interior but tours sometimes don't allow it.

I was devastated seeing so much decorations, gold, and all those unnecessary ornaments. It all seemed to sparkle. Church is a place you can pray, have a chat with God and this place made me overwhelmed so I had to leave fast, I was unable...More
