Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A wonderful experience of historic values as well as a historic store. I bought some beautiful hand crafted items and enjoyed a cup of tea and cake and a friendly chat. You’d need a heart of stone not to love this place.

Great store with lots of old memorabilia for you to browse through. I was very happy to find they made flat whites with oat milk and I ave to say this was the best coffee I had in the five days we were in the S.Island. The owner was very welcoming and the overall experience was very pleasant.

Talk about a trip down memory lane. The store has a collection of history you just don't see anymore. Including a catalogue the quite possibly was left by my father in the 70s.

The owner was a wealth of local knowledge and general information on the stores origins. I had stopped for a cold drink 5 minutes I thought. But ended up spending a very enjoyable hour or so

This was a real trip back in time. Most likely any memory of general stores like this was on family holidays in years gone by, in rural area. So much reminded me of local town shops. I love that Gilchrist's serves as a store servicing the local area and as a time capsule.
Kids these days would have no comprehension at all.
I did get the sense that the owners would rather it was just a local store, as there were no attempts to engage, which was a little disappointment.

We called in for a look and ice cream. The owner is friendly and informative regarding the history of the town. There's a fabulous lolly selection too.

Don't miss the classic Tip Top ice-cream in a cone while you gaze in wonder at the shelves packed with memorabilia from times gone by. Great community asset and a wonderful gent packed with stories and passion for the region.

This place is worth a visit. We called in during our bike ride on the trail and had a pie and a drink. Stayed for a while looking at all the old stuff.
