This is an amazing way to explore the countryside. We thoroughly enjoyed the 3-day walk. There was enough challenge so you know you have done a bit of hiking. Accomodation, showers etc was all very comfortable.. Follow the advice Shaun gives (clothing, footwear etc) and you will have a great time. Shaun and the team will look after you well. Could not fault it at all.

We were impressed with the facilities, foodie treats and comfy accommodation with showers.
Shaun does an amazing job looking after his Groundhog day stream of walkers. There are lovely areas of regenerating bush. Hut locations are great.
Downsides? First day track needs some improvement, the last day could do with shade in places.

Friends
Friends had organised this trip months ago. Food and footwear, sleeping bags and appropriate clothing packed, us four gals headed for the hills. Literally!
Day One. Stopping at the Hurunui Hotel for dinner and drinks an absolute must before you bed down for the night at ‘The Cookhouse’, Island Hills Station.
Greeted by Shaun, aka ‘The Janitor’, we were shown to our rooms and amenities for the night. Upon meeting this guy, you just knew you were in very safe and knowledgeable hands. He’s quick with a joke and you just know you’re in for a few gags during your stay.
Day Two. 11.5 km walk ahead, Shaun gives us a 20 minute briefing before we get into the 4 x 4 which takes us to the start of our walk. A very knowledgeable guy, our Janitor gives us the run down on ‘Mean Manuka’ and ‘Kind Kanuka’. (You will jolly-well have to book a stay there to find out all about that).
Off we go. Not arduous at all. A very beautiful and relaxed way to walk 11.5 k’s through some of the most beautiful flora and fauna you will see. I’d be a bit nervous if I was allergic to bees as there is literally a ‘truckload’ of them flying around near the many hives you will encounter along the way. But what a buzz to see them (excuse the pun).
We arrive at Valley Camp ready for a cold one and a hot shower. Not disappointed on both counts. Bless the Janitor! He’d also left a little surprise for our girl gang of eight (with two husky dogs in tow). Not mentioning these treats either so if you haven’t started booking enquiries, there’s a bit more inspiration.
Day Three. Two gals completing the full 18.5 k to finish and our ‘husky girls’ alas, pulled the pin owing to a sprained knee. They shall return.
And then there was four! Off we go on what was a very easy 9 km walk to the iconic ‘Bush Hut’. Scenery once again, breathtakingly beautiful and before we knew it, there we were, sinking another cold one and settling in for a read, scrabble around the fire and generally talking rubbish. The shower...the best yet!
Day Four. Sadly. 9.5 k’s only and the end of the road. More open spaces, easy paces and the occasional Keruru, grunt of a pig (not the Writer) and another lovely treat awaiting us at ‘The Cookhouse’
If this place doesn’t get on Country Calendar, I’d be bloody disappointed.
Thinking of going? Please don’t give it a second thought. You absolutely won’t be disappointed.

We walked the track over three days with our 9-11 year old children. The track was well marked and in good condition, and the accommodation was clean and comfortable. A pleasantly surprising variety of terrain and views for a shorter tramp. Great to have the luxury of the pack carry and we felt very well looked after.

Fabulous track, accommodation and host Shaun. Every little detail was thought of. Huts toilets and showers were extremely clean and comfortable. Shower was hot! Track was very well marked. Lots of extra touches made the whole experience very enjoyable. Would highly recommend. Island Hills manuka honey very tasty and good value too.

This private walkway exceeded our expectations. The Track is very well marked and maintained. Shaun provided some lovely surprises that we have not had on other walkways. The accomodation was excellent and very clean.
We did it in 2 days staying the first night in the Cookhouse at the start which allows a early start on the first day. Shaun and Hailes took us to the start of the track.
The hut on the track was excellent and we had to ourselves a group of 4 and walking through mainly bush was very enjoyable. The 3rd day which we did on day 2 has some farm land to walk through all very varied.
Shaun has thought of many little extras which adds to the enjoyment that you don't usually get on walkways.
Its a hidden gem that we highly recomend. Superior to many other walks/ hikes we have done.

Highly recommend this guided trip-Kiwi value non-stop and memories forever.! You will learn things you did not know about the NZ bush and wildlife and have such a better experience of the land!! Just carry a daypack and enjoy every minute. Super clean historic huts, toilets, showers (hot at every stop!!) Really well-organized..Plus awesome meals, wildfoods, treats and surprises-don't miss out! This one is a MUST DO even for experienced trampers-over gorgeous country with the Best Guide Ever (you can find the track yourself but you will miss half the experience without Shaun Monk with you!)--book it- you will NOT regret it. Plus if you're into hunting, teaching your kids to hunt-he is your man. Super thumbs up all around!👍😊👩‍🦯🐮🦅🐑🦌🐾🌿🍾⛰🛏💯🚶‍♂️

With my brother and his two kids (16 & 12) visiting NZ for the first time, I was keen to be able to give them a proper NZ hunting adventure and for them to have an experience that wouldn’t normally be available to them back in Wales. With the amazing topography and scenery that Island Hills offers and the wealth of knowledge and experience Shaun has it was a perfect option for them to be booked in for a two night trip.

Shaun tailored the trip to them perfectly offering them the opportunity to learn about hunting and the bush. This included first leaning how to shoot hares and trap possums and then ending with the highlight of successfully getting a deer and the excitement of getting a pig.

When the three boys arrived back from the trip they were all exhausted but with huge smiles and an eagerness to retell all that they had learnt, and they had some fantastic stories to tell.

All in all they had an awesome trip out in the wilds with the luxury of a nice warm hut and a hot shower. I would highly recommend a trip to Island Hills Station with Shaun to anyone, regardless of experience levels, as the flexibly offered will cater for all.

This was a really awesome trip, Shaun really goes all out to accommodate for all types and makes the trip exciting all the time.
For me it was amazing to see my son, who doesn’t like dirty hands, get in and up to his elbows gutting a pig. Shaun really did amazing at getting a town kid involved and for me it was amazing to see.
The accommodation and surroundings are amazing. 100% recommended
