Totally stunning meal and service at St Vincent's Friday bistro. We had an absolutely delicious meal in this lovely restored church. The meal was of world class in Takapau. Thank you to Will and Bianca and team. A lovely family occasion to treasure. Highly recommended.

What a fabulous visit. The high tea in itself was great but the overall experience was magical. I especially enjoyed being able to wander around the house and grounds. The owner showed our group a Slide show of the history of the house which was really enjoyable and interesting. Such good value. I will be taking friends back to enjoy this wee gem.

My parents and I booked in for high tea at Orua Wharo and the visit surpassed our expectations. The homestead is very grand and a real eye-opener into a lavish lifestyle from 140 years ago. Lots of NZ history associated with the homestead too as Peter gave up lots of his time to tell us about it. Loved Dianne’s scones too which were world-class. Ran out of time to explore the grounds fully so will just have to return again as would be nice to see it in summer. A really lovely afternoon overall.

This is truly a labour of love and I admire the owners for opening their home. A lovely old homestead and church in spacious grounds. The woodwork inside is amazing and tea on the verandah is a delight. Great choice of teas and i will definitely buy more! Highly recommend the delicious scones too.

If you are travelling State Highway 2 through Central Hawles Bay then definitely make a booking for the visit and high tea - it is just a short detour off the main highway and absolutely well worth it. Peter and Dianne have undertaken a major task to restore this large house with years of work already completed and much restoration still to be done - but the outside and inside the house is stunning, there is some great colonial furniture, and interesting to see it as a work in progress. The hosts provide a fascinating history of a significant property whilst providing you with high tea (and a very worthwhile break in your journey through Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa).

We experienced a lovely high tea seated in a beautiful lounge room with the most amazing wood work. Gray and her grand daughter Savannah greeted us and made us very welcome. We enjoyed our club sandwiches and delicious scones with home made jam and cream. We were then given a guided tour around the home and can see what amazing dedication and hard work is going into restoring this grand old homestead. We were also able to buy the leaf tea that we had sampled. We also looked at the beautiful chapel located on the grounds. Whilst there is no signage on main road with directions it’s not too difficult to find.

This visit was the absolute highlight of our wedding anniversary!
We were met at the homestead by hosts Peter & Dianne who were attentive and charming.
We were privileged to get an audio visual presentation on the history of the homestead & church on the grounds.
We were treated to high tea on the verandah to the sound of beautiful classical music from a discreet source in the gardens.
The sense of nz history is amazing and we were provided with reading matter as we relaxed in the beautiful atmosphere.
The homestead was saved from demolition when Peter bought it in 2000.
It has been a labour of love in restoration.
Orua wharo is situated about 2kms from Takapau village which is just north of Norsewood in the hawkes bay nz.
Well worth visiting if you love nz history.

Historic homestead in Central Hawkes Bay - well off the regular beaten tourist track. Beautiful countryside and weather. Accommodating hosts with a vast knowledge of the homestead's history. If you are interested in traditional carpentry or woodworking - this is a must visit destination. The homestead also hosts High Teas. Fascinating to see a huge restoration project in progress and how the early wealthy colonists lived in New Zealand in the 18 and 1900's.
