After initially emailing Outdoor Samoa to get bike quotes and a guidebook and I got quick replies from the "Chief Enthusiasm" and "Chief Reality" officers I knew i was about to start a fun and easy trip!
I used the very useful guidebook provided to loosely plan the trip and Ross and Frances answered my other questions. When we arrived the bikes where ready for us to go, we packed our bikes, put our belongings into the storage provided. We started smiling like fools when we left the base with our very minimal packs and didn't stop till we arrived back.
Amazing Scenery, 5* Accommodation (for those who enjoy open air sleeping and can manage a little noise) and a wonderfully simple and laid back trip. I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to ditch technology and read on the beach either solo or with a partner.
We felt very safe all trip, food was often a bit heavy (lots of fried stuff) but was clean and safe enough and the locals where very friendly and where lovely to speak to and ask questions.
We where often riding by 6 am to avoid the heat, which was a lovely time to ride and then we would arrive at our accommodation, book bed and breakfast and have tomorrows paid for breakfast there and then, as it wasn't served till 8 and we where long gone by then. Sometimes we had dinner at the Fales, sometimes we got roadside BBQ or something from a cafe for a change of scenery and if it was cheaper. We also had picnics often to avoid fried foods. Fresh bread, Tuna, Bananas etc...
Use public transport, hitchhike, trust the locals, try the food and enjoy.
Thanks for a memorable and probably unique trip.

After traveling for 30+ hours from the US and spending a night at a hotel, we had 7 hours before flying to Pago Pago. We decided on the giant clam snorkel with a one-way e-bike ride and a van trip back to the hotel.

Jill picked us up and could not have been nicer. My favorite part of the trip surprised me: it was simply the coastal bike ride past typical villages with kids in uniform lavalavas walking to school. I’ll agree with some other reviewers that the “hill” is pretty substantial, even with the e-bike. To be fair, I was crazy-tired from our travels and jet lag, but Jill was there to pick me up and take me to the top when I just couldn’t do it…and she was incredibly kind during my embarrassment.

The clams were impressive, and I was glad to see so many “small” ones (only the size of a football) ready to take their place in the sanctuary. The freshwater pool at the put-in site was very interesting, and the fresh oranges and breadfruit chips after the swim were great too.

Jill’s commentary on the drive back was exceptionally helpful in helping us understand Samoan culture, and I hope her gentle coaxing of the young man who rode with us as a “guide” rubs off. He needed to be more forthcoming.

The only real downer was that the same young man, after telling us in front of the villagers who run the sanctuary not to touch the clams or stand on the corals, did precisely that multiple times. I base my choices on what to see and do in a place on sustainability and education. He was young, but I do think it needs to be impressed upon him that respect for the natural world is why folks like me come. It matters.

Finally, a special thanks to Ross for helping us navigate what we thought would be a real problem: Samoa’s “requirement” that those coming from Pago prove their measles vaccination status on arrival. As it turned out, nobody in Samoa seemed to care one bit about our vaccination status, but we had considerable proof just in case, and if it HAD actually been required, we were all set thanks to Ross.

I wish we had booked another excursion with Outdoor Samoa on our return trip. I highly recommend them.

Fantastic place to hire quality bikes and get the best lowdown on where to go and stay.
We cycled around Upolu and had the whole place to ourselves. Hardly any tourists around and all the locals where super friendly and welcoming. Some fale stays are only just opening so it was a matter of playing it all by ear but didn’t get disappointed once.
#conservesamoa was one of the highlights as was snorkelling among the giant clams.
Beautiful people, beautiful country.

Booked a 1 day kayak tour. Communication was excellent during booking. Day out was amazing. Ross and Jesse were wonderful guides, adapted well to different levels of experience in our group and were super friendly, fun, patient and knowledgeable. The day was absolutely perfect, we saw sooo many turtles and had the whole area to ourselves. Will definitely rebook.

My friends and I had two tours with outdoor Samoa, a mountain biking trip and a kayaking trip to see turtles, both of which were fantastic! One friend was unwell because of the hot weather and a prior operation but the team took great care of her. Lulu, Tua and Tino were wonderful and we had lunch with them under the fale at Outdoor Samoa after the biking trip, talking about culture and life in Samoa. Two of my friends are from Africa and they had their first kayaking experience with Outdoor Samoa! They were really afraid of the sea, but the Outdoor Samoa team were really encouraging and supportive, not to mention confidence-inspiring! It was an experience they will never forget, and we really appreciated the humour and patience of Perry and Tino! We highly recommend Outdoor Samoa to all travellers!

I did the 9 day tour of Savaii and it was the perfect way to be immersed in Samaon culture and see the countryside at a slow pace. The beaches were amazing and the riding was always scenic. Ross and Frances do a great job of making sure all the details are taken care of and the supported ride makes the whole vacation worry free.

We recently booked the Giant Clams Cycle and Snorkel trip with Outdoor Samoa and it was brilliant. Ross and the crew were friendly and extremely helpful in organising the trip with patience for our limited internet and mobile reception.

They were patient and kind to my youngest son (who has mild autism) and helped him select a bicycle that would suit him. Despite only having booked a 'limited' support option for the ride, Tino was happy to give the youngest a lift when his legs ran out of oomph before we got to the hill.

The ride itself had some of the best scenery on the island, and that is saying something. We were blessed with a sunny day and a gentle, mild breeze. The beach at Lefaga is an amazing, white sand and turquoise water 'no filter required' beauty. The clams are worth the cost- huge, fascinating creatures with shimmering, iridescent spots. Whilst the surrounding coral has suffered from bleaching and extreme weather events (like all coral reefs around the world) there is still plenty of good snorkelling to be done and seen.

The major part of the ride is on the flat, with a steeper section just before Lefaga. Even as a regular rider and runner, I was grateful for the e-bike assistance up the hill: even if you are a committed triathlete, unless you are used to training in 30* heat with high humidity then just go with the e-bike: it turns a hard ride into a pleasant and slightly challenging one. The eastern side of the hill has a more rough road section, reminiscent of an easy MTB trail, so for less experienced or nervous riders, take it easy. Don't worry- all of this will be outlined in your briefing, along with where to buy ice-creams to break up the trip!

I elected to ride back to the base, but the rest of the family (husband, 10 year old and 12 year old) took the van back with Tino. It was not a problem for me to do this, Tino was happy to oblige. Again, with the e-bike, this turned what might have been a challenge into an easy ride, with me beating the van back home by five minutes, even stopping to take many photos!

They are not wrong when they say you may get a sore arm from waving "Hi" and "Bye" to the village kids! On my way back home, kids walking home from school also lined up to High Five me on my bike riding past. It Is also totally probable that you will have a sore face from smiling so much.

I can honestly say this was one of the best day trips I have ever done, anywhere. It remains a highlight of our Samoa trip, which has turned out to be the best family trip ever. Cannot fault it. The ONLY slight hiccup was that an e-bike to suit my youngest couldn't be found- AND that is more to do with his ASD rather than the fault of Outdoor Samoa as child-sized e-bikes are very hard to come by. A few step-through but adult-sized bikes were available, but since my son was not familiar with the height this was a problem- for him, not the company, which made all efforts to accommodate him. For kids without sensory or balance issues, the e-bikes available may be completely suitable. In the end, with the wonderful support, it turned into a complete non-issue, with Tino taking my son in the van when he tired (he's not a very fit boy).

Completely recommended. 6 out of 5 stars!

Two families - 4 adults a 4 year old and two almost 2 year olds - seems like a good plan to go on a cycle holiday in Samoa! It certainly is when organised and supported by Ross and Frances and the amazing team at Outdoor Samoa. We just finished an 11 day bike ride around Savaii, and can't really think of anyway that it could have been better as a fun family holiday. From the beautiful fales right on some of the most gorgeous beaches I have ever seen, the friendly hosts, interesting sights and sounds of Samoan village life, gorgeous scenery and the welcoming nature of all the locals, particularly towards the children, we all had a blast. The biking was fun, nicely spaced over the whole trip with no particularly onerous days and several rest/beach exploring days and the support van with Lau and Jesse as the super obliging drivers/tour guides was there to lug our gear, keep us hydrated, take us to all the best attractions, and give the kids a chance to take a wee break when they needed a snooze. We had more options than we needed for the kids on the bikes including bike seats, trailers and a tagalong, and they were always happy to swap this for that and take breaks with us whenever needed to keep everyone smiling.

Particular highlights were the beaches at Manase (Tailua), Vaimoana, Falealupo and the best beach ever for families Satuiatua (go there, you'll see what we mean!), as well as several great snorkelling spots, many sea turtles and other cool marine life seen, the sea arch and blowholes, and just generally what a fun time all the kids had. Logistically everything was so well organised and made a trip to a very special but not highly touristed part of the world so easy for us. Was particularly impressed with Frances and Ross's patience with all our many questions when we first got in touch with them.
