We made a couple of trips between Upolu and Savai'i but found that the Online Booking system had a few issues. I made enquiries more than 6 month prior to travelling but was told that you can only book from a few days before your month of travel, and then it turns out you just make an expression of interest. Word of warning: Make sure you get to farry terminal early and get your tickets to get a spot on the day if travel. The Online Booking system needs to be fixed.

We travelled to Savaii from Upolu and return. Staff at both ends are unhelpful and rude. You are made to line up like cattle in a area very similar to a cow shed. No one helps you load or unload your luggage, when you debark you fight traffic leaving the boat to get to your bags, very dangerous. Terminals at both ends are disgusting, not a nice experience all round.

These people seem to have the monopoly of transport over the strait but impossible to get ANY reservation unless visiting fr a month or so. ar, no problem, but ordinary passengers seem a no-no. Single-handedly shooting Samoan tourism in the foot!

This is the best way to go between the two large islands. Only takes aout an hour and a quarter each way, sailing between the coral and the reefs. Comfortable seats and plenty of them. If you book for a car you need to be there early or trust to luck that there is room for you. If you have scooters, motorbikes or push bikes there is alway room squeezed along the sides.

Travel across Apolima Strait from Upolu to Savaii, return, was best on the Samoa 11 from the point of speed, less roll, facilities and safety. Samoa Express is smaller but a thrilling ride in a 2m swell if in a car. You are supposed to stay inside the vehicle on Samoa Express. A swell has the suspension going through "full travel" if up the front of the ferry and the water coming through the gaps in the "on ramp" when out at sea with some ending up on the car windscreen. Memorable, especially if diagonally onto a swell and with a roll. Ticketing and marshalling was easiest at Savaii int he absence of good signage. Upolu staff had contradictory messages for vehicles and passengers. Best to ensure that tickets and travel is confirmed. Travel can be terminated if sea is rough. Entrances through reef would provide little leeway in a heavy sea.
