Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have just finished the West Coast Wilderness Trail with Cycle Journeys and had a ball.

The team at Cycle Journeys could not have done a better job. We were a bit of a complicated group and they handled all our requests with no issues. The team at the base were super friendly giving us our daily overviews, fitting our bikes, answering all our requests and having plenty of laughs with us. The drivers were brilliant, sharing many stories of the region with us. The accommodation partners were great, as were the tourist partners at West Coast Scenic Waterways.

The West Coast Wilderness Trail is magic. It’s a combination of bush tracks, roadways, swing bridges, board walks and gravel roads providing lots of variety to suit everyone.

I will recommend Cycle Journeys to everyone and we are already looking to see when we can do A2O with them. Thanks for providing this group with an awesome holiday.

The whole experience was one to be savoured- the weather was beautiful, the company great and the WC Wilderness Trail is a wonderful ride, not too physical but the forest is beautiful and stunning, especially round Lake Kaniere which is a scenic reserve and if you go there do the Kahikatea Walk, beautiful original trees and birds singing all over the place.
Cycle Journeys were helpful and their bikes are mint and beautifully maintained. The crew at Cycle Journeys looked after us and we'd thoroughly recommend them. Great folks.

We did the Big Day Out and it was one of those experiences we will always treasure. The ride gave a taster of all of the best of the variety of NZ terrain: bubbling streams, man-made races full of gold mining history, rivers, weirs, bridges, different rain forests, mountain meadows alive with wild flowers, a stunning lake, coastal views, and all in the shadow of NZ’s majestic mountains towering overhead. Cycle journeys made this not only possible, with limited time in NZ, but highly enjoyable. The bikes came with everything we needed and were in top condition. We were given a quick and informative tour of the area while we were taken to the start of the ride, which also gave us a starting elevation that we didn’t need to ride. The Big Day Out is designed to encompass one and a half sections of the wilderness section of the West Coast track and making use of e-bikes meant we could fully enjoy the ride. We loved dipping our feet in the river, and swimming at Hans Bay which was just stunning! The ice-cream van there was a bonus! We had more than enough battery to crank up to full for the last part when we were tired. (Although most of the section from the lake was downhill back into Hokitika), and rode along the coast a little way at Hokitika before returning the bikes. Overall I couldn’t rank Cycle Journeys more highly!

I have cycled around much of Te Waipounamu as a young adult in the late 1970s. Revisiting some of these places through riding the West Coast Wilderness Trail was awesome! The Trail is beautifully constructed following upgraded existing features - a disused railway line, tramways, bush tramways for log extraction, water races, and little used farm roads, as well as being built from scratch in many places. The bush, shrublands, wetlands, coastline and mountains are stunning. The gold and coal mining and timber extracting history is fascinating. The storyboards and signage is great. We thought that cycling the Trail in the winter was like the West Coast's best kept secret! We wore several layers and were prepared for rough weather, but the weather was great. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful experience.

I booked the West Coast Wilderness Trail with CJ as part of a larger trip. I had my own bike but noted their rental fleet was a good mix of quality 'ambient' and e-bikes. The trip and logistics were handled perfectly, great staff with a wealth of local knowledge and a few off-trail excursions added a great deal of value to the short shuttle legs. Their accommodation partners were brilliant, and I stayed with one pre/post trip.
The trail is easy riding with fantastic scenery and packed with history. Don't let the relatively short daily distances deceive, there is so much to experience you will have no problem filling the day.

We have just had an amazing four days cycling the Wilderness Trail, booked through Cycle Journeys. Shuttles, information given to us, accommodation, all superb. The tour to the Hokitika Gorge is a must and the Tree Top Walk is great also. We had fantastic weather - blue skies and not much wind. Everything was organised, and booked so all we had to do is hop on our bikes. Cycle Journeys even put on an extra shuttle for us down to Ross, to accommodate our arrival time into Hokitika.

From the first point of contact the CJ team were so easy to work with. Our preferences were listened to and the itinerary was a perfect fit. The recommended ‘add ons’ (walk through Hikarika Gorge and the Tree Tops walk) just topped the whole experience off. The Shuttle drivers were all so friendly and engaging.

Cycle journeys organised our cycle trip along the Westcoast Wilderness Trail. And it was really good. Great trip planning maximised our down hill cycling which I thoroughly appreciated; Mike, our driver, was great at telling us stories about where we were going through, and their accommodation choices were superb. A 20 star trip
