Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Second time to have visited the forest.

Two options, 3km or 9km walk.

Both walks are amazing with beautiful views of the forest. The sounds of all the birds and animals are amazing to experience.

It was great to spend time in nature amongst the majestic trees. We did the 3 km walk. It is a safe area and a very refreshing time in nature.

The walk was beautiful. We only did the 3k as we were short on time. Incredibly serene and calming.
The road to the entrance was quite bumpy so take it slow in your car. We had a small vehicle and it was fine.
The walk was a little bit undulating and slippery in places so best in trainers and so may not be suitable for older people.

Circles in the Forest trail is magical, capturing a small part of Daleen Matthee's book, and bringing back so many childhood and early adulthood memories of hikes in the Outeniqua mountains. SANPARKS does an excellent job in maintaining the trail, it is well marked and not a single bit of rubbish was to be seen. It was a special day sharing this part of my history with my 3 teenage kids.

R 50 permit fee. A 9 km hike through the Knysna forest. You are surrounded by majestic trees, birdsong, luscious ferns, creeping vines and tiny jewels of flowers. It is a magical place which everyone should wander through at least once in their lives.

The Pros:

I read the book in Afrikaans class in matric. I remember little from the book, but it’s really cool to hike an area a book is based on and where elephants may have wandered.

I’m not sure if it is allowed, though the same permit can be used to do the shorter Drupkelders hike.

There are several spaces along the way, most of which are close to a water source (stream or river), that are absolutely mesmerizing. Moss, ferns, towering trees and trickling water makes for an enchanted forest experience.

There are opportunities for swimming in the river and natural pools!

The paths are well-marked. We knew where we were and felt safe at all times.

There is a braai area at the parking space.

The Cons:

The 9 km route can get a bit tedious at one point, especially towards the end. Here the path widens and the forest canopy opens up. You no longer feel as though you are in the forest as such.

Such a beautiful walk through the forest, not too challenging either. Most amazing half way point at the waterfall. If it wasn’t raining I would have taken a plunge for sure.

We weren't planning to do a hiking trail so we weren't dress for hiking. But when we heard the Circles in the forest trail was here we decided to do the route because we love the book and the writer Dalene Matthee.
The route wasn't to hard. We've walked the shorter version and my two kids managed it quite well. The youngest is three.
The forest was amazing and beautiful, covered in moss and different coloured mushrooms and beautiful trees. Even though we walked half of the route in the rain, we still enjoyed it.

We chose the 9 km trail, (rated moderate) as we are reasonably fit 65 year olds. The trail takes you down into a deep ravine where a lovely waterfall into a deep pond surrounded by beautiful ferns can be seen. After that, there must have been a very steep uphill hike for at least 2,5 km. Some of the footpaths running high above the ravine are dangerous as they were subsiding and there is nothing to stop a deathly vertical fall into the ravine. In one place a tree has collapsed, and you really have to be careful to climb over it without slipping. This a worthy hike for very fit people, but some simple maintenance is needed.

I did this walk with my two elderly parents who are used to walking but find some hikes challenging - this one was perfect, just the right level of challenge, cool because it's in the forest, and there's water (you can swim if you like) - a liittle river runs through it. If you've read any of the books that are associated with it, then that makes it more interesting. Apparently there's a (shy) elephant who still lives here and we thought we saw evidence of that - trees pushed over and stripped of bark - but didn't see the elephant at all. Superb walk and highly recommended (we did the 9km one).

The walk is beautiful. Those big, old trees are just beautiful.
Remember extra water. Very humid in the forest. Was also very wet when we walked. Our shoes a bit dirty afterwards. We didn’t pack a picnic basket, but would definitely do it next time.
After this walk we went to Jubilee Creek for another walk. Swam at the small waterfall. Very refreshing.
Yes, there is no rangers in the forest, but it is well kept.
