Best Township
Jun 2018 • Friends
This is one of the best townships in South Africa, the place is always vibrant and alive. The streets are full of life, and joyful locals. Love the spirit of determination and devotion, people are doing things for themselves, the place is filled with entrepreneurial spirit also. This is a hidden gem just waiting to be seen.

Get someone local to take you round
Jul 2017 • Business
The most densely populated part of Sandton. Every one is sending money back home and spending as little as possible in Joburg - so its not beautiful, but shows a better view of how most of the people in the country live than the guesthouse, hotels, restaurants and shopping centres do.

Nice experience, thank you VWSA!!
Oct 2017 • Business
This was a very nice experience to drive through the township.
Was amazed by all the narrow little roads.
The tour-bus operator had to maneuver a few times very clever to get around some corners.

We ended up at a sports field for the VWSA Blue Bike handover and this was a very humble experience.

Well done VWSA..................

Big vibrant township
Jul 2017
Township with close to a million people, tucked inbetween two highways in the middel of johannesburg. We had a guided tour in a van, visited a orphanage, buthcer, bar, made a walk through the area with the smallest shacks and played football with the kids. Very inspiring to hear the stories of the struggles and crimes, but also entrepeneurial spirits despites the extremly difficult circumstances.

Home to luminaries: Hugh Masekela and Nelson Mandela!
Feb 2017 • Family
Once known as the Dark City because it had no electricity, Alexandra Township, as most locals call the informal community that sprawls between the posh suburbs of Sandton. As a
A peek into the history of Alexandra reveals that Alex has been home to many luminaries including world-renowned jazz maestro, Hugh Masekela and former president Nelson Mandela. Young man, Nelson Mandela rented a tiny room from the Xhoma family in Alexandra.
The area was proclaimed a 'native township' in 1912, escaping the territorial apartheid of the Natives Land Act of 1913 and remaining one of the few areas where black people could own land under freehold title in urban areas

Interesting to see where Nelson stayed when he came to Johannesburg

I had a guide with me who showed me Alexandra and the heritage site. Interesting and very different from Soweto.

Not worth a visit

Recommended but fails to live up to this. The food once again is OK, the salads are atrocious - an explosion of lettuce with little else

The real thing
Aug 2016 • Solo
Unlike Soweto, this is not a tourist area - so here you see the real thing. It is also poorer than the more well known Soweto.

Before going to Johannesburg, I got tons of warnings which all said different variations of "whatever you do, don't go to Alexandra". Supposedly it was the most dangerous place in the supposedly dangerous city of Johannesburg, and if going there I would for sure get killed, or if I was lucky I would get away with just being robbed - that was the common opinion.

Well, of course I went there. And I survived. I didn't get killed, I didn't get robbed - not even when I took up my wallet to pay for the fruit and snacks I bought from one of the tiny roadside shops that were everywhere. The only thing that happened to me, was that people smiled and treated me like a normal human being.

The place was lively and vibrant, I arrived at daytime, and left slightly after dawn - never feeling unsafe at all.

Pass Through

Alex is a large township situated right next to Sandton, the financial capital of South Africa (and Africa). There is no reason to go to Alex. You can drive through it on London Road and it is a safe and well lit road but prone to pot holes and police checks.

Due to the not-too-good stories my colleagues and I had heard, we wanted to feel and experience Alexandra! We dressed up as locals with some well known funky 'thug' hats and bounced around THE Place :-)! Shopped around while taking in the views! We had a nice time there. Though we were a bit scared of course :-)!
