Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I enjoyed coming in here, it offers more exploration and wonder than many museums as it’s set up as almost a school activity/ investigation center. It has things they encourage you to touch, drawers you open, places to explore and little info boards that open up. Even has a creative coloring in section for if you have a young one who gets bored.

I was impressed by this little museum. Well put together with a remarkably balanced view of life and history in the area. Well curated.

It has a bit about both the natives & local colonialization of the area. Rather complete about the local area. Not a must see but worth dropping by.

Lots of displays and activities catering for a wide range of ages. Activities kept children interested and involved and they were learning even when they didn't know it. Good to see new displays. Somewhere to spend a little time or a lot.

A well set out museum of interesting artifacts and information bringing our history to life. Great to see lots of young people showing a real interest. I will be back to delve into the archives to research my ancestors.

Dioramas, samples you can touch as well as see, drawers of fascinating collections, exhibits you can walk through, multiple Moa skeletons, taxidermied creatures, and it’s all fascinating and there are good information panels.

It was a real treat to visit a museum that reminds me of childhood trips to the British Museum in London.

Our 5 yo once found some bones on the beach, and unsure of what animal they belonged to, we encourage her to take them to the South Canterbury Museum and see if they could provide some insight! They helped her figure out by looking at the animal's teeth that it was a horse (not a cow, like we though!) and the history of WHY those bones may have ended up on the beach! We appreciate the staff encouraging our girl to learn about the world around her!

We went to the museum on a wet afternoon in August with few expectations. We came out stunned by the displays that gave us a real appreciation of the area and how this part of NZ developed from its earliest days. The information on the wildlife past and present was very accessible and we saw young ones being excited by what they saw.

A must visit!!
