Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Located a few steps from the walls, near the visitor service center. Its exterior is already quite different but inside we find curiosities such as the tomb of a Jew and the cenotaph. The polychrome of its decorations and the stone in which it is built give it a very particular personality.

Basilica de San Vicente is in fact the older Church in Avila, dating back to 11 cent. It's built on a place where Vicente along with two another martyrs were executed in 4th c.
However, being outside the city walls it's overlooked by the famous Avila Cathedral.

In the Basilica of San Vicente, Avila, there is the crypt of the Virgin of Soterraña. You go down some stairs near the transept in the nave on the left. It is in the central chapel and is the patron saint of Avila. Saint Teresa entrusted herself to her before undertaking the reform of Carmel, taking off her sandals to become a barefoot nun. It has a Romanesque carving, although it has been restored to reconstruct its original form.

We were a bit jaded from seeing so many cathedrals and churches in Toledo and Barcelona. Also paying multiple admissions, although not expensive was becoming tiresome. Our guide suggested we see this so we did, The different styles of architecture were very interesting. The inside was quite impressive and beautiful. We were glad we went.

This beautiful building (despite some scaffolding for repairs) was a real surprise. Thanks to the audio guide included with admission, I learned all about the long history of 1,000 years on that spot where Vicente, Sabina, and Cristesa were martyred in the 4th century. The cenotaph with a cartoon-strip like set of carvings telling their story — including their torture and execution — is one of the most remarkable pieces of religious art I have ever seen, but far from the only remarkable moment is this stunning monument. Absolutely a must-see in Ávila.

It is a Romanesque beauty, with a Gothic part, that you cannot miss a visit. It is made of a special stone that produces a decorative effect based on rust stains. The main altar, although baroque, is a marvel. The main doorway or the fantastic cenotaph are other reasons not to miss this visit.

This is one of those European churches which has been enlarged and changed so many time over hundreds, actually, over 1000 years and now has elements that span so many different eras. For me, the most impressive element was not even the building itself but rather the ornate tomb which includes intricately carved and colored figures. It was a bit annoying that everything in Avila required a separate ticket. I did not mind at all paying for the upkeep of these treasures but a package ticket would have been nice.

My wife and I visited Avila on a day trip from Madrid during a visit this past spring. Our guide took us to the Basilica de San Vincente at the end of our tour of Avila. It is very impressive on the interior of the basilica. The gold plated altar is beautiful and the carvings on the martyrs’s tomb is very colorful. The Basilica is not to be missed when visiting Avila.

It is difficult to appreciate the size of Ávila Cathedral as it is in the town closely surrounded by many buildings. Not so Capilla San Vincente, completed in the 14th century it stands alone as an imposing structure in red brick. Internally it is equally imposing with huge pillars so familiar of this era. It has a very ornate altar-piece with many icons and gilted woodwork. Unusual is the burial place of the martyrs Sabina and Cristeta Martyred in Roman times taking up the centre of the church in front of the main altar.

Visited the Basilica on a short visit to Avila. It is closed for lunch between 13 30 and 16. We had to wait a little past 16 until someone opened the door. Entrance costs 3 euro regular price and 2.20 for students. You can see everything quickly. There is an audio guide QR code for phones. There is also a subterranean chapel.

I went there in the morning and it was open. As per their website it is open Monday to Saturday 10 am to 6:30 pm during the summer season (April to October) but tourists are not allowed in during ceremonies. Best to check with them to be sure.
