Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Spectacular old cathedral, far exceeded all my expectations; it is a must visit. And the visit to the tower with Jennifer (the Guide) was didactic, enjoyable, endearing... a real luxury. Visit to repeat. Without crowds and to enjoy listening to the very good explanations of the audio guide and be overwhelmed by the beauty that this cathedral treasures.

This cathedral must be seen. The audio guide is also worthwhile. The “blood” granite gives the nave a very special atmosphere. You can admire early medieval art, Renaissance - it's really impressive. The defensive structure has been redesigned more and more, so that the church even gets something light inside. A must!

The visit exceeded my expectations, to enter you have to pay and payment is fully justified, go on time. The architecture and artworks are impressive, I had no doubt it would be a beautiful place to visit but what I saw completely exceeded my expectations. Very educational

The visit with audiophone allows to observe the building with curious red sandstones. A secret passage connected him to the Royal Palace. Several recumbents in the different chapels. Cloister where the pyramid pinions seem to have been imitated by Gaudi at the Sagrada familia.

It was a last minute decision to do a pitstop in Avila befire heading back to Madrid. This cathedral and the city walls (which yiu can walk on top of) are just astounding. While some reviewers have said that this isn't as grand as some other cathedrals in Spain, I found it massive and most beautiful, filled with exquisite artwork and interesting interior. It was moving and sombering to see some of the sculptures as one can only imagine the amount of talent needed to produce those works. Definitely recommended to visit.

As many have said, a beautiful building and well worth the visit.

I had one quibble with the audio guide… Tomas Luis de Victoria, one of the great renaissance composers, was a chorister here. Yet, the audio guide is mostly Beethoven and Handel. Whyyyy?????? Even in the choir stalls, Victoria doesn’t get a mention.

A niche complaint to be fair, but my choir nerd heart was a little bit broken :(

We bought tickets online to visit it at 17:00, no one warned us that today it closed at 17:45. In fact we could have bought them by 18:00 and found the cathedral closed as happened to other people we saw on the way out.
When we complained that we had not had time to see her, the solution we were given was to return the next day, as if we lived there.
It seems that someone forgot to communicate to the portal the entrances that closed much earlier today.
The attitude of the two people in the post, which other users have already described, very little desire to collaborate or offer an apology, as if the problem were not with them. Total that we have paid 8€ per person to be kicked out after 45 mins.

Visits are prohibited during Mass on Sundays and the cathedral opens at 12.30 pm. We saw several obviously tourists like us come and go from the cathedral during Mass, so we asked for passage as well. I didn't lie and say we weren't going to Mass, and we were denied entry. Besides, unpleasantly. I understand that you do not enter during a Mass but not that there are different rules for both. I can only say they lie if they want to come in and say they can do Mass. To tell you the truth they were rude and it has left me very bad taste in the mouth of the city.

It is a beautiful temple whose some details worsen my assessment. The façade has two towers with different heights, and in one of them and part of the façade they have added a lump of brick to the height that spoils a beautiful view. The cloister is covered in glass and does not allow you to enter. But the choir, the monstrance and the main altar of Berruguete, among others, as well as the fact that it is the first Gothic cathedral (it is Romanesque-Gothic) in Spain, are more than enough reasons for a visit.

Although the Cathedral of Avila is usually compared with the tomb of the French kings of Saint-Denis, it reminded me of the fortress churches of southwestern France, in which it is also difficult to distinguish is it a church or a fortress? The apse of the cathedral is built into the most vulnerable eastern wall of Avila. The 40-meter bell tower can perfectly perform a defensive function. From the outside and less from the inside, the cathedral has a Gothic appearance and is considered the first Gothic cathedral in Spain, the predecessor of the Leon Cathedral and the Burgos Cathedral from the UNESCO list. This is associated with the name Girald Fruchel, who began construction in the XII century. The interior of the cathedral is certainly set by Gothic proportions, but eclecticism reigns inside: a Renaissance altar, a choir in the style of Plateresco and chapels in Baroque and even classicist style. A common thing for European cathedrals. The three-tiered retablo of the main altar was created for 13 years by three artists: first Pedro Berruguete in 1499, then Santa Cruz, and only after their death in 1508, Juan de Borgogna completed a long workThe cathedral museum has painting by El Greco, but I didn't get there because of lack of time... I looked at El Greco in abundance in the Prado. I liked the choirs performed in the Plateresco style and date back to the XVI century. The choir chairs are made of walnut wood and decorated with filigree carvings. But the main masterpiece of the cathedral is located behind the altar. This is the tomb of Alonso Fernandez de Madrigal, Archbishop of Aquila and advisor to King Juan II. He was considered a noble polymath and theologian, therefore, post mortem on his tombstone depicted him immersed in reading. However, under a long name, he is not remembered because they called it El Tostado, which means "toasted" because of the swarthy skin color.
