About
We are a cultural business incubator and market in the Cook Islands and to bring together the community. Te Ara features a fantastic visual display about the story of the Cook Islands from pre-colonial times, independence in 1965, through to the present day. It also houses a quality gift shop and cafe selling only locally produced crafts and food. We are happy to take group bookings, tours, schools and other interested groups.

Lovely location. Off street parking, really nice cafe & interesting visual displays plus movies. Well worth 2 hours plus
Second visit this trip, so much to read & love the various movies that roll over on the rear wall. The shell memory map to navigate from is intriguing & can easily be overlooked. Great blown up photos & information. There is a souvenir shop & great cafe, with good food selection & really nice coffee. More an adult & teenager museum than for young kids, as not hands on.

    Historically and Culturally Fascinating Museum
On our list for a rainy overcast day, we visited Te Ara-Cook Islands Museum of Cultural Enterprise. Entry was $15pp. It was a fascinating lesson in the history and culture of the Cook Islands. The display is so professionally and artistically displayed, it's a pleasure to experience. Take your time in this lovely cool space to read and absorb all the information on offer before exiting through the gift shop and cafe for a great coffee.

A walk through history—entertaining and informative!
We throughly enjoyed this informative museum. It’s full of historical information presented in very interesting/engaging way. Take some time to look at the artifacts and listen to diverse voices in the short film clips. This is one of the best “museums” I have ever been too and a highlight of our trip (when not in the lagoon)! We sampled the food: veggie quiche, butter chicken pie, fresh lemonade and fruit smoothie. All were excellent and priced reasonably. Ari, was especially kind and informative. We highly recommend this for anyone wanting a little history of the Cook Islands.

    An important stop!
Every visitor to Raro needs to visit this museum. I learned so much about the Cook Islands and I'm so pleased I took the time to stop by. It's not very big but it's very insightful. A nice place to get out of the sun. Great iced coffees at the on-site Cafe too.

    Best coffee on the Island
It wasnt until we were a day away from leaving this tropical paradise that we had the good luck to ‘find’ coffee was available on a public holiday! (Constitution Day). Oh wow .. the best coffee we found .. along with the warmth and charm of the barista and his team!! If youre a ‘coffee snob’ like we are … you wont be disappointed with both the coffee and the ‘treats’ on offer’ ..

an excellent few hours can be spent here. the museum is interesting, with a stick map, a short history of the islands, there is also an aquarium. Usually a member of staff escorts you to answer all those awkward questions. You get wi fi, good coffee & snacks as welll

We walked past this several times before working out what it was- a social enterprise that has an excellent museum attached. Unlike the govt museum that focuses on post european settlement , this interactive museum included pre European settlement and doesn't pulling punches in the story telling. Having Dan to help with interpretation is a real bonus.
Excellent photos and story board, supported with a large list of video's.
Very professional presentation that anyone who wants to look beyond the booze and the beach should see.

Awesome visit to the Te Ara Cook Island Museum of Cultural Enterprise. We took a group of 22 12/13 year olds for a visit as part of a school trip to Rarotonga. Stan was our host and great. The first part of our visit was spent across the road at the local beach where we learnt about the formation of Rarotonga, marine life and celestial navigation. This was followed by a tour of the museum learning about the Great Migration across the pacific and more about the history of the Cook Islands. And we finished with a session about the impacts of pollution and plastics in our seas and a cool art project out of recycled plastic bottles. Awesome learning experience.

I thought I knew quite a bit about the Polynesian voyages around the Pacific but there was a LOT that I learnt at this museum. Much of it thanks to Stan who could not possibly have been more helpful and informative. So thanks Stan! This is Freddy and Carol - somehow i could not log in to my Trip Advisor account.

We really enjoyed this lovely museum. It gives you very good overview of the Polynesian migration. The setting was very beautiful I also like the statues in writing back to fishes. If you have some time it’s worth having a look.

A great little stop on a rainy or windy day in Rarotonga. It was quite a small room with not much for kids to do on the inside, however husband and I really loved reading all the history and information inside. There was a big screen on the one side with videos playing which entertained our two kids (8 and 10) while we walked around reading information.

The cafe was a bit slow but food was lovely. If they have the butter chicken pie - I highly recommend it!

One of the best experiences on the Cook Islands. The museum is fantastic, to understand a more realistic view of what the history of not only Rarotonga but the whole of the pacific. We were so lucky that Stan was present at the time of our visit and he was willing and enthusiastic about answering any questions that we had. Even if Stan isnt there, it still is a great tourist attraction and well worth the money. Great to go to a museum that portrays the local culture with the mana it deserves. Soooo interesting the pacifics past, present and future. Its not just a museum, it a cultural, social, business, community and environmental education centre. Please support this place because it is community based. Well done to the people who started this place.
