Aitutaki island is very small but quaint. It does not have many restaurants and you must reserve if you want to eat in them. It does have fast food available around the island. The island itself is okay but it is the motu’s (small islands) inside the Aitutaki reef and away from the main island that are most fascinating with better snorkeling, white fine beaches on small islands and amazing colours of the waters that change in depth and the coral that you must maneuver around to get to these many small islands. To get to these motu’s you must hire a boat with guide and it is usually $100NZ minimum for each person for 5-6 hours. We went with Matriki Beach Hut Lagoon tour and Mathias took only 4 of us out for the day and it was fantastic with the trip that included swimming with giant trevallies, huge clams and many colourful fish. Went to one foot and honeymoon island and Mathias knowledge of the area and birds was outstanding. We stayed 9 nights but felt we could stayed less as we saw everything in a week.

It seems obligatory to visit this island on the Lagoon Cruise. One Foot Island Beach is the highlight of a pristine islet of Aitutaki lagoon. This beach is supposed to be one of the best beach in Australasia. It has powdery white sand, warm azure water and swaying palm and coconut trees. There are many theories about how the name came about but on map it looks like a leg. There is a legend that a chief forbade his subjects from fishing here, then saw a man and his son fishing from the rocks. He ordered their death and they fled to the island and hid in a coconut tree. When the father was captured, he swore he was the only one who had been fishing. After a long, fruitless search, the chief decided that it was just the rocks they had seen. The father was killed and the son was left wandering the island alone. Since then it has been known as footprint. The crew of Bishop’s cruise claim to be descendants of the survivor and hence they have a building on the island where they serve lunch. On this cruise you can wade across the sandbar to the nearby islands at low tide or put on snorkelling gear and drift along with the currents as you watch tropical fish darting about. One of the buildings is the post office, where you can have your passport stamped, a bit of a novelty but as we did not have many pages left in our passport we didn’t do so.

Absolute hoot of a trip, laughed and learnt from start to finish, and the lunch was unbelievably good on a remote tropical island. Saw some fabulous fish and felt like Robinson Cruiso when we were dropped off on a sand dune to make our way across to One Foot Island. A must do!

Beautiful island but the experience could have been better. We were unceremoniously dropped off by a boat on an excursion arranged by Paul Gauguin cruise. The captain instructed us to take the plastic chairs from the boat with us. On shore there was a rather disorganized, crowded lunch of grilled fish, hot dogs, fruit and salad. Tables were reserved for Bishop excursions and we were left sitting on our plastic chairs for 3 hours. Lunch was rushed. On to the next group. Free water. One bathroom and you had to request the key. Workers seemed grumpy. Beautiful water for swimming and snorkeling. Three hours was a bit too long. Bring water shoes as the coral is sharp for walking.

We visited as part of the Aitutaki Day tour, spending the last part of the day walking and swimming round the island. It is simply amazing. We had great weather. The lagoon water is very warm, blue, and clear. We loved it. Sunblock is essential.

This is a case where the destination is beautiful, but it is the trip around and to the island that was fabulous! If you want to get your passporte stamped, well, the boat vendors have the stamp!! It's a nice place after a day or time out on the lagoon to just float around in the water and enjoy the water and the scenery. DO snorkel out to the buoy marker by the island as there are some really HUGE giant clams right there. Actually, you can see them without snorkel gear, swimming in about 12 feet of water. Otherwise, this really ISN'T a snorkeling destination.

How the island got its name is a great folklore tale. Certainly one I will remember for ever.
Aitutaki lagoon is so impressive as a whole rather than the sum of its constituent parts.
Can't wait to find out if my mail makes it home from the island's Post Office!

Just experiences one foot island last week and it was amazing. I walked around the entire island and every corner looked like those photos you see on a calendar of the best beaches in the world. I actually stood in front of the palm tree pictured here! Great day of snorkeling, swimming and just relaxing on the beach.

We took a small boat cruise out to this deserted paradise... walked along the beach and was rewarded with the cutest stamp to my passport. Super sunny, brilliant white sand, tons of fish for snorkeling off shore by boat. We felt very safe and would recommend this spot to our friends.

We went with a tour to this beautiful island 1 foot island. The tour organised us a beautiful barbecue at the post office. We shared our lunch with the cat and chickens. And after lunch I got my postcards cancelled with a beautiful postmark. We had a wonderful swim with the big fish and lots of other sea life. It’s well worth the journey. Yeah would you say

I will be in Aitutaki for 2 1/2 days. One day I am doing the Teking Tours of the lagoon (including time on One Foot Island).. Is it worth it to take a boat (Bishops Cruises) for a day to spend on One Foot Island or should I just stay on Aitutaki and snorkel from there?
Written 11 February 2020
For the whole day you would need to pack lunch and take heaps to drink, personally I would just spend a few hours there unless all you want to do is lay on the beach, read and hop in the water, could be a very long day out there other wise. Doesn't take long to walk around the island. It is lovely out there, hope this helps.

Hi I will be staying at Raratonga, are there tours from Raratonga to here?
Written 16 January 2018
Heya,
They have the day trip to Aitutaki which you can book through Air Raro, from memory it’s $500 which includes return flights, a tour around the island and then the day cruise to One foot island on the “vaka cruise” which is amazing and in my opinion the best cruise. The cruise includes a BBQ lunch and lively entertainment from the tour operators. Definitely a must do if you are visiting the Cook Islands.
Taa and Ali are amazing hosts on the cruise.
