Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I went up Mount Maungapu. It's a nice walk up there and you're up there pretty quickly since it's only like 130m in elevation. The walk up there feels a bit like walking through a jungle, lots of green. I did it on cloudy day so you could tell the humidity just hanging in the jungle. Up there, you have a really nice view and you can literally see entire Aitutaki, the airport, the lagoon, everything. It's a nice thing to do!

We did the trek to the top in between rain showers. ADVISE: Do not do it in those conditions. the last part of the hike was very steep and on slippery small gravel, like walking on marbles. Coming down was a bit on the scary side.
The view was almost a 360 degree one. Tall brush in one sector blocked the view.
Well worth the climb.

If you are staying on Aitutaki, take the time to visit Mount Maungapu and take in the glorious views. The road to walk up is opposite Paradise Cove Resort, is signposted, and takes only about 10-15 minutes. It gets slightly steep at one point, but nothing most able-bodied people cannot handle. The views from the top are breathtaking and help you to really take in the sheer majesty and beauty of this amazing atoll, Aitutaki. It's well worth taking the time to walk up there.

Most people dont come to Aitutaki for land activities... some just even come for a single day just to check out the lagoon and leave... but I think this was the nicest land activity we have come across during out 5 days on Aitutaki and I would say it's a must for everyone who is staying for 1+ day plus on this beautiful island, and in particular if they rent a car (which I would also recommend for a single day as that way you can get to see it "all").
I am trying to leave here a lot of helpful hints via trail/error we did and my markings on the google maps as the actual roads aren't correctly marked or visible at all;
1. You don't need an SUV/AWD - we drove a small passenger car and made it perfectly fine - you will go through some steep and uneven terrain at times but nothing dangerous or hazardous - once you make it to the "final flat" terrain is where any type of car has to stop either way as from here it's a short, yet very intensively steep, walk/hike - people with mobility issues or young children are discouraged from going - we are perfectly fine couple in mid/late 30s and we were very careful as you do slip easily from the gravel/dirt, especially downhill - it's nothing extreme but definitely requires due seriousness...
2. You can do it from either east or west side of the island - we did it from the west, literally there is a sign across the street from the Paradise Cove hotel, you take that road up the hill and here is where you want to find my directions on the blue arrows - see the blank version of it vs. with my markings for the actual road difference via google maps
3. Do wear comfortable shoes, absolutely no flip flops - that last hill is slippery and steeeeeppppp - yes you can prove me wrong that you can do it with flip flops on but it's absolutely not worth the risks
4. The views are 360 and it's awesome, a great spot for a picnic, to go lunch, chill - we had it to ourselves, we havent bumped into anybody at all whether driving or walking here :)
5. Take your time going down! Lastly... take your time going down... it's very steep and slippery!
6. Like I said before you can go east to west or west to east - we went west to east and it felt almost that we were going through someone's private property (the last picture with brown road, you can see farm animals) towards the east side, the road wasn't as "official" but it's definitely less hilly/steep, yet traction isnt't as great so after the rain maybe not the best idea.
TIP: on the way here you can go to Piraki Lookout - you will ultimately merge into the same road that leads to Maunga Pu on my directions, it is a bit adventurous at times but again nothing I havent seen in the past, nor anything that would damage the car.

Great views from the top - definitely worth the short hike. Still quite challenging in the heat as quite steep and a lot of bugs at the top!

Walked 6.53 miles of this trail. However, do not recommend when it's very hot outside. I would suggest doing this hike during the winter months or before the sun comes up.

It's definitely worth making this trip up to the highest point on the island if you're reasonably fit and can handle an unsealed and steep track. The views from the top are fantastic and it gives you a great idea of where everything is on the island, because you can see it all, so good is you're looking to see where to go at the start of the trip, or where you've been at the end of your trip!

Only a 30 min walk mac from main road opposite Paradise Cove. Must do activity to see view of whole area. A bit steep at top but okay.

We drove on roads which seem to lead us to the Mount. We did have a map , and just followed the road to the other lookout point, and carried on, took the correct fork in the road which steered us westward with what it seemed like a valley parallel to the lookout weather tower. We persevered and 10 mins later, we arrived at the spot to park you car or scooter. You have to walk the steep gravely path up to the look out which has 360degree view and is a MUST. Do not try to drive up as it is 45 degrees at some spots and coming down, be careful as its loose gravel. We took photos, and drove on (not backtracked), get to a T junction - turn right, and you then hit the main loop road, (TV on the ground - a marker?), turn right or left depending on where you want to go. You can get to this Mount from Paradise Cove location. There is a sign pointing to a road. Not sure how far it is to walk up or if you can drive up.

Hiked Manga Pu which is highest peak on Aitutaki. Only took about 20 minutes to climb somewhat steep hills. At the top where some kind of radio antenna was located was great views of both West and East side of Aitutaki lagoons. You could also see a few Motu's on south East side. Going down was a bit tricky because of steep slope and slippery gravel but made it down without incident.

How long does it take to walk to top from main road?
Written 24 September 2017
Depends how fit you are - it is a very steep climb - I would say about half an hour
