A necessary part of every visit to Moorea. The view is stunning. You can do it via truck, ATV, or on foot. Start your hike by 8 AM if you want to avoid trucks / ATVs--which I recommend. The view at the top is truly stunning. The last few hundred feet are on a very narrow and steep path which has rails / ropes on only a few places, so if you are prone to feat of heights, as I am, you may find it unnerving.
The staff at the bottom sell truly wonderful tropical smoothies at a reasonable price. After a steep hike on a hot day, you deserve one.
After the first few hundred yards you hit a loop. The right path is short and steep. The left path is less steep and longer. I wanted to go left, but the group chose right. I think they made the right choice. It was a slow slog, but going down that way would have been hard on the knees. Of course, you could do the less steep way in both directions, but FOMO kept us from doing this. Really though, having done it, we would not have missed anything going the flatter path both directions.

You can not leave Moorea without hiking to this view point. If you are not into hiking the owner of the land will be happy to drive you for a very small fee. They have the fruit juices stand at the entrance of the hike and I swear to you I have never tried such delicious juices! Their home made jellies are also amazing! Michu and Rahiti thank you so much for such wonderful memories!

We went up to magic mountain on an ATV tour through top-jet/ top-quad Moorea (which was excellent by the way, highly recommend them). I wasn’t sure what to expect, as we had been to the Belvedere lookout several times during our trip and assumed it was the same thing. Man was I wrong. On the sunny day we had, the view was easily the best on the island and you could see for miles. The road up, while a bit jarring at points closer to the top, wasn’t all that bad.

Eye opening tour…. The driving and more importantly the reversing skills are to be lauded.
This was a very interesting trip, going up magic Mountain, the views are stunning, short 300m walk at the end on a steep path was worth the view.
Smoothie bar at the bottom was delicious.
On to the pineapple plantation and it’s not like your Hawaiian style plantation, very interesting.
After we saw massive freshwater eels 😧…..
We saw an archeological area and learnt about the Polynesian beliefs briefly.
A very quick distillery visit, small amounts to sample but enough to feel the effects and then on to the Albert owned pearl shop….
That’s also where you pay for the experience…..
Good tour, enjoyable guide but the over priced pearl shop was not necessary….
Seeing the number of 4x4s heading all in the same directions doing the same excursion…. Not a unique tour.
Would be nice for one of the tour operators to offer a flora and fauna tour,… A more informed tour of the discovery of the Islands, history of the Polynesian people etc. A cultural experience
All the same I would recommend this tour, going into the valleys very picturesque, a change from the beaches. Just be aware of the commercial aspects.

This view cannot be beat. If you stay at Moorea this is a must see. You are able to really appreciate both of the bays of the island and see why the mountain is called magic mountain. The hike was not too difficult and there is a great juice place at the bottom that I would highly recommend.

So very nice hike. It is paved essentially the whole way with somewhat uneven concrete. If you go in the afternoon, it is mostly shaded. I think we would’ve cooked if we were in the sun in the hallway. So pretty hike up to mango groves. The left turn is slightly easier than the right turn a third of the way up. My favorite part is probably the three concrete benches about 3/4 of the way up on the left or a slightly easier route. I could’ve sat there for a while. Definitely worth they may be our 15 minute round-trip.

So there are 2 ways to get to this viewpoint: one is through a jeep tour where you climb up the final steep 300m. We did the DIY option of parking at the base at a smoothie bar and paying 200cfp per person to access the path. I believe this is 3.3km round trip. There are some reviews that describe this as an easy hike but it is not. It is very steep all the way on uneven terrain. There is shade most of the way with a few scattered benches. My teenage sons described it as moderate. As a 50yo healthy adult (not an elite athlete but work out 2-3 times a week), I was drenched in sweat by the top. I discouraged my 80yo FIL but he was determined, and did make it to the top with frequent rest stops. The view at the top is magnificent. We all felt it was worth the effort but be prepared for a challenging hike, not a stroll through a shaded garden. We thought the view was better than Belvédère Outlook, which was still beautiful but not quite as impressive as Magic Mountain. The smoothies at the bottom were delicious and refreshing. They also have a very clean restroom which was a pleasant surprise.

We did this twice during our stay in Moorea. We were so blown away by the views the first time, we had to come back. The hike is steep but it doesn't take long to get to the top. Both times it took us about an hour and a half round trip, including time to take photos at the top.
As others have noted, it's 200xpf per person to park in the lot. It's worth it for the views!

We parked at the bottom at the shop just on the main road. The parking fee was 200XPC and walked 30 minutes upwards for spectacular views over the lagoon on the north side of the island. Partway up the path splits in 2, we took the left path which is easier and return via the right path.

Short, very steep hike to the top but so worth it! The view was simply stunning...360 degree views. We did the ATV tour to get here so only had to hike the final trail to top. Not sure how long the hike from bottom would take but you should be a fairly good shape to take it on.

We rented a car yesterday and tried to find pineapple plantation but couldn’t. Where exactly is it? And do you need a 4 wheel drive to get there ?

Hola.Somos una pareja de adultos mayores. Nos recomiendan la excursión??? Estaremos a mediados de abril en Polinesia.

Can you drive via 2WD to the top, or is a 4WD car required? Can you just walk along the road to the viewpoint? We're not interested in a ATV tour. Thanks!

Definitely cannot drive a regular car up the mountain. Walking is possible but steep and somewhat precarious. Highly recommend a half-day open-air truck tour. We saw things we never would have seen otherwise.

how far away from magic mountain is the cruise ship port?
we are cruising the South Pacific beginning February, I would appreciate any info about the islands
without having to pay crazy excursion prices.
Written 13 January 2017
The base of magic mountain is about a 25 minute drive from the Marina. Some cruise ships anchor in the northern bays of the island, so much closer if this is the case for your cruise ship

Hi Roger,
We are thinking of booking a tour with Eyes of Moorea. Do you recommend? Thanks.

Je voudrais savoir à quel endroit précisément il faut prendre la piste (à pied, 4x4 ou quad); cela semble pas loin du belvédère mais je ne vois pas trop le départ de la piste...

I would like to know if it is easy to get to there and how long it would take from North West of the island. Also, how hard/long is the hike? We are visiting the island with two toddlers.
Thanks in advance.
Written 21 February 2016
I would not take toddlers on the hike from sea level. Even if you had them in back packs, the hike is very steep, hot, with minimal shade. It would be incredibly tough. I'm not even sure if I would suggest a tour on a truck. It would be bumpy, the road is narrow, and has lots of sharp switchbacks. Maybe check into renting a car for the day and ask them. There aren't any restrooms or facilities at the top and you would want to keep them close as the lookout area has steep drop offs. It is so beautiful at the top though.

Our cruise ship arrives on Sunday April 5. Your calendar shows that no tour is offered on Sundays. Please advise
