Yoga & spa oasis in the heart of downtown San Jose
Jun 2011
After a very enjoyable trip to Granada, Nicaragua, I spent a couple of days in San Jose, Costa Rica before heading back (on another bus) to my home in Puerto Viejo, Limon. The bus ride from Managua to San Jose is 9 hours long (Ooof!). I am a yoga-studio seeking person anyway... Kasasana is a beautiful and small yoga studio with massage, tea and vegetarian food. The studio itself is clean, peaceful and well equipped. Wood floors, mats, bolsters, blocks. Class started right on time, and the instructor, an Ashtangi, led a beautifully balanced and strong asana practice. My kind of teacher! The class was in Spanish, which made it more fun. Fortunately, he used the Sanskrit names of the postures in his sequence, but made all of the commentary in his native tongue. Downward facing dog? Perro abajo. Si' maestro! The person working at the front desk was bilingual, and made getting there a lot easier. Everyone took time out of their work to greet me and make me feel at home. The studio is located in Barrio Escalante, which is a fairly upscale neighborhood in the city proper. Many people fail to see beyond the immediate when in San Jose and make frequent derogatory comments about San Jose. I love the city, and even more so because it is *not* on most tourist's agendas. The neighborhood is in close proximity to a lot of Costa Rican cultural centers, parks, universities, shopping, dining, etc. This is a real Costa Rican experience, not some manufactured tourist attraction. A yogi will certainly fall in love with this place...

Not friendly at all... Try another yoga studio
Apr 2014 • Friends
I tried this yoga studio with friends and we were really disappointed.

We attended a lesson to try the place before signing up for regular classes (thank god!) and from the start we were received by unfriendly staff. We ended up paying for the try out lesson (which is regularly free in any other yoga studio) and were completely ignored from the start. We were lucky that a friendly student told us were to go, change, etc. Also, although the professor was helping other regular students during the class with their postures we were completely ignored by him.

The class itself was ok and the place is averagely clean (weird smell and dusty floors). If you are interested in doing yoga in San Jose, thankfully there are many other good places to try (Lamat, Mandir, Krama).

Also, fyi, the vegetarian restaurant mentioned in other reviews (which is actually very good) moved location. Look for "Mantras".
