You don't exactly think visiting a church while in Costa Rica. It's all about the beaches. But if you are like us, among the Christian faithful, or you just appreciate beautiful architecture, you should go. In addition to the simplicity of it's design the sense of reverence is profound. It is serene. And you will need all of that serenity to recovery from the Limon traffic and to prepare for your drive back. It is certainly worth the effort. There is an open gate to get into the grounds (which are beautiful) and into the church. You can park inside the gate or on the street.

We had planned on a morning shore excursion but cancelled it when they changed it to late afternoon. We decided to explore on foot instead. My husband spotted the tower of the cathedral from the port and we walked towards it, not knowing a thing about it. On the outside it is not like any other Catholic cathedral we've ever seen. It is blocky concrete with almost no defining details. But inside, we were blown away by the beauty of the many stained glass windows. The light coming through them made the colors come alive. There was a very unique sculpture with three images of Jesus overlapping, representing the moment he passed from death to resurrection and light. The front doors are worth mentioning also. This was well worth the walk from the ship.

This is a very unique cathedral with a very spectacular interior. It is very different in its interior design, which is worth a look.

The original church was severely damaged by the 1991 earthquake and replaced by this one dedicated in 2010. Only the old tower survived the destruction. It stands a bit apart from the colossal brutalist style structure next to it. From the outside it does not particularly look like an inviting place, but don't be put off and go in. The ceilings almost look like curtains and light permeates the central hall through stained glass windows. Quite a spectacle.

In the centre of the town, we approached this church with low expectation as it looks tired with an exterior of blackened concrete. Inside was a complete surprise with pretty stained glass windows. There is a small section that has remained from the early build which survived hurricane storms.

We asked our tour driver to stop for pictures and he was happy to do so. The Cathedral is likely the most beautiful place in Puerto Limon and well worth a look. Although it was well after Christmas the elaborate manger display was still up. Free but you are welcome to donate.

Dropped by today with a friend and spent way more time than I thought I would. The architecturere and natural lighting mean that each angle renders a whole different perspective. Don't miss the beautiful side chapel.

This is a recently completed cathedral. It has a dramatic exterior. The crystal shaped spire is beautiful.

We were taken here on a guided tour of the city. This is a really stunning church and a huge contract inside to out.

Very modern architecture on the outside, but inside is stunning. The windows are large and spectacular. Very powerful place.
