Neighbourhood: People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place is situated along Nanjing Road East which is a pedestrian filled with people.
The foodhall is situated in a multi storey building with each floor dedicated to certain products. There are also numerous restaurants in the building which serve delicious and reasonable price dishes.
You can shop and take a break for a meal at one of the restaurants and continue to shop when your stomach has its fill.

The #1 Food Hall is a great place to visit. It's a four story food emporium of many different vendors organized by category. There's an international section, a tea section and many candy sections. You will see foods you've never seen before, yet can't identify because the writing is in Mandarin.
The upper floors have a good court along with sit down restaurants. McDonald's is one of them.
Every time we have been there, the place is crowed! Wall to wall people! It has a high energy level. It's lots of fun!

This is not intended as a review. Just a correction. For Tripadvisor staff: I think it's supposed to be "foodmall"

The First Food Hall is in a prominent position on Nanjing Road. It is always crowded. It's the Chinese version of Harrod's Food Hall in London with many, many more people.
It's spread over three or four floors. One section has sit down restaurants. Another has counter style food service with a central seating area.
The supermarket portion is setup in areas. There's a huge area for candy and snacks. There's a deli area. There's frozen seafood. There's meat.
Although it's popular with tourists, it's not setup for Westerners. You will pass basket after basket of mushrooms. Unfamiliar looking foods too. All the signage is in Mandarin. You will still have s great time.
There's an international food section with western brands. There's a wine shop. Generally speaking, English is not spoken. You make yourself understood somehow.
If you are a foodie, this is a place that's worth a visit!

Great spot for Chinese food shopping and to grab lunch. From classic wonton soup, soup dumplings and Macao’s style food.

When my wife and I recently visited Shanghai, we looked for some nearby restaurants and luckily this one came up. We decided to give it a try. This is essentially a 4 story mall, host to different restaurants and food shops.
My wife wanted to try a dumpling stall, but as nobody spoke any English, we failed to order. We then decided to give another stall a try. It was hardcore Chinese food, but the people working there sported a shirt stating " real Italy taste" (or something similar, and yes it was ITALY instead of Italian...). My wife enjoyed the food and a bonus was that the whole meal was less than 4$. It was not very cozy, but that was not what we were there for.
The rest of the mall offers different things from cheap souvenir-worthy rice wine to nice locale cuisine and finally to extremely expensive imported sweets from Europe.

In China, if you want real traditional food and ingredients you go to the small local markets, if you want fancy imported food items you go to a fancy department store.
Here they have traditional Chinese food but not a very good selection nor the real thing, and the imported foods were limited. It was an upmarket food shop that's neither here nor there.

This place was buzzing when I arrived around 9.30am. Shops along Nanjing road don't normally open until 10am so at least people can have a look around in this place. They sell all kinds of food like biscuits, nuts, lollies, yoghurt, meat etc. upstairs also has food and a McDonald's.
