- Ankita152014New Delhi, India131 contributionsMust visit in KolkataIf you are in Kolkata you cannot miss a visit to this place. It is massive with a total area of 62 acres. Amazing gardens and the property is made of the same marbles as Taj Mahal. Just one tip not to visit on Mondays. The building is closed. But you can walk around the garden area on that day. It also has a beautiful lake with ducks. And the street food outside is amazing. Do try the Bhel PuriVisited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 October 2023
- Sonal AgarwalBengaluru, India383 contributionslargest monument to a monarch anywhere in the worldI was amazed by its beauty and grandeur. The entire white marble building stands in the middle of a lush green garden, surrounded by fountains and statues. The memorial has art galleries where one can see beautiful and old art pieces. They have displayed portraits, coins, pillars, arches and sculptures. You can also some of the personal belongings of Queen Victoria which were used by her. It is one of the landmark and signature locations of the City of Joy Kolkata. It is a must-visit place for all. It represents majestic British architecture. There is a huge park inside and it takes around 1.5 hours to visit the whole palace. One can spend time sitting in the park with the family and kids. The ticket price is 30 (keep a change) and weekdays are less crowded. Ticket Counter closed at 5 PM. There is availability of drinking water inside. In the evening, they also have a half an hour light show which starts at 6.30 pm and the ticket price is 100 per person. The ticket window opens at 6 p.m.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 November 2023
- Charles_and_SusanNottingham, United Kingdom7,329 contributionsCertainly impressive whatever your views on the RajI was thinking a statue to Victoria - wasn't expecting this. Yes, there is a statue to Victoria in the grounds but the white marble building accompanying it is so over the top. Apparently made in the same marble as the Taj Mahal. You can wander around some of the rooms and there are displays. Our guide who was Indian did explain about the mixed feelings of something so grand celebrating Victoria and the Raj. He did say though, you need to balance out the good and the bad of Victoria's Empire. Can't help but be impressed though with the building and the gardens.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2023

Beautiful building that the architect was influenced by Taj Mahal (used same source of marble) and Parthenon in Greece with the curved pillars, etc. You will get a nice free tour if you go ask for the guide. Getting a ticket at the entrance is a whole another story. You have to be part of the mob at the ticket counter elbowing your way. Some things never change in India.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 January 2024

This is a popular tourist destination and there is a lot of history here, but it is incredibly crowded. There is very little breathing room, making it hard to see some artifacts. If you are visiting as a foreigner, I recommend getting a guide to help shortcut the long lines and to highlight the important artifacts.

Go early to beat the crowds - we were let inside the park before ten, so were some of the first visitors inside and could appreciate the beautiful building itself and also the painting gallery and interesting exhibition of the history of Kolkata. Highly recommend this place. Walk in the park was also very relaxing, it is an oasis within the chaos and noise of the city.

This is something else again. A time machine that takes one back to the years before the First World War although only built in 1921. It is a tribute to its eponymous dedicatee. Extracted nay blackmailed into contributing, India was generous in its tribute to her. The building is instartlingly white Indian marble. Ornate and rather elegant. Once past the bronze of Victoria Emperatrix , one steps into a vast echoing hall surmounted by a galleried cupola. The first sight is a beautiful statue of the young queen. The ground floor is full of loot, portraits of the dignitaries of Victoria’s India, watercolours by her sailors, cannon, a wonderful black marble table mounted on four bronze howitzers, weapons of the period of British rule.
Upstairs I found an exquisite exhibition of Indian miniatures that took me a full hour to see properly.

Had a splendid experience walking around the monument and learning about it's construction, the British era and the history of India between 1700s and 1950. The monument is grand and surrounded by beautiful lakes with some amazing Flora and Fauna. We also spent some time through the galleries depicting images from the bygone era and some regal paintings by British artists. It's a must visit for those who are interested in art history, architecture and the city of Kolkata.

The Victoria Memorial is an iconic structure & is synonymous with Kolkata! Even the rain couldn’t dampen my excitement of visiting. For the Victoria Memorial, two kinds of tickets are available – one for the gardens (INR 10) & one for the gardens + museum (INR 30).
The pathway is flanked by gardens on both sides. A statue depicts Queen Victoria in her later years sitting on a throne.
I absorbed Netaji’s life stories, ideals & beliefs in the Irrepressible Subhas gallery. You'll ponder how less we know about Netaji.
The Royal Gallery on the ground floor consists of oil paintings from the British Raj. The other set of paintings I liked were by the Daniell duo; they traveled across India & documented what they saw in their paintings.
As you exit the Victoria Memorial building, go to the first floor to see Biplobi Bharat Gallery. It contains aspects of the Indian freedom struggle that haven’t been given their due importance in the mainstream narrative (Revolutionaries & Armed Resistance). Take your time reading through contribution of Naval Mutiny, formation of significant associations etc.
Drive around the Memorial at night; it looks even more marvelous with its illumination.

This grand monument to Queen Victoria is a beautiful building in Kolkata. The gardens surrounding the building are also lovely. Inside is a mish mash of museum type displays and artwork. The artwork is not my style but locals were snapping photos all round. The building is huge and really lovely~ a white beacon amidst the chaos outside.
Entry cost 500 rupees.

Kudos to the authorities for the maintenance of this mammoth structure and the calming well maintained gardens and water features around it. One can purchase a ticket to enter the garden area only and enjoy the duck ponds, shady trees and benches. The flower beds are beautifully maintained as well. The structure looks fresh and almost brand new, the inside exhibition was well put together and in theme (we visited around 15 August). Pick a map of Kolkata and postcards from the seller, to send to family and friends on your way out of the gardens.

Victoria memorial is a widespread estate with a musuem surrounded by a huge beautiful garden. There are ponds, green lawns, trees all over. The museum has life size stautes carved in marble if most if the British viceroriys and governors. The biggest attraction is the worlds largest painting of oil on one piece canvas size @ 7meters x 7 meters. Its a treat to watch. Its a must visit on your list. Enjoy the tour. It takes twi hours for the museum tour so go with amoke time on hand. Enjoy!!

Smoking is not allowed anywhere dear.... it's just that some people don't want to understand that and tend to ask such silly questions as if they don't know that they are not only harming theirselves but also other people around them .......well, best of luck on your tour.👍
