Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is where you see the films you can't find anywhere else. Also, the popcorn is fantastic and local.

Athena Cinema is a great little three screen theater that focuses on independent and art house movies. There staff is always friendly and the snack and ticket prices are affordable.

This theater tends to show some of the more eclectic movies that get missed at the Athena Grand, which means it is your only option for seeing some releases in Athens. That said there are some major issues with the theater. The seats have no head rests and are very hard and uncomfortable. If you have neck or back problems you will find it very difficult to sit here. (For me, with problems at the base of my skull, I really need to be able to rest my head on the back of my seat to watch a movie comfortably, so it's very hard to watch a film here.) Doors to the theaters are heavy and difficult to open. If you use a mobility device, such as a cane, you will find you may have issues. They don't have any carriers for popcorn and pop (also a problem if you are trying to get into the theater with food or a drink.) There is very little leg room between the seats, so if you are the least bit tall you will probably be uncomfortable. Screens are also not very big. Finding a place to park near the theater can also be a problem.

A very clean, and amazing theater to take grandkids! Alittle expensive for treats when you have 5, but well worth the money to see the shows they want to see.

Went for a Sunday matinee which turned out to be a private showing for a quirky indie film. Comfortable and clean.

We happened upon the Athena after visiting art museums and dining in downtown Athens, and enjoyed a film we had wanted to see, one that is unlikely to come to our more commercial theaters. The theater originally opened in 1915 and has shown films continuously since then. Ohio University purchased it in 2001 and it is now operated by the College of Fine Arts. It is well worth checking the schedule for current offerings.
