From Nagasaki station take the line 1 tram towards the temple/shrine (not Akasako). Go past China town, get off at 33 Kanko dori. Cross the street and you’re there. I was lucky because some people had set up vendors selling ceramics, which I collect. Many...More

Japan's shotengai - long covered shopping arcades are quite something - stretching for hundreds of metres in different directions, often decorated wiht local emblems and colourful banners. Hamamachi arcade offers a large variety of traditional and modern shops and restaurants, while staying warm and dry.

The arcade provided cover from the sun and there were breezes felt throughout the promenades. I ended up buying some fabric, per an Internet recommendation, and an obi. I also tried samples of Castella. I ventured into, my favorite, ¥100 store and another discount store...More

We didn't have the time to travel to Arita or Imari or any of the other pottery towns, but fortunately found the shop "Sha-Sha" in the arcade that sold a good selection of ceramics. So glad that a local sales Shiseido sales clerk at the...More

With a long arch-shaped roof above, this shopping street in itself is really not much different from the other shopping streets that I got to like Nakamise in Tokyo, Tanukikoji in Sapporo, Teramachi in Kyoto & Shinsaibashi-Suji in Osaka (the best one for me is...More
