About
Torii are gates or arches of stone that traditionally form the entrance to Japanese temples. This one in Nagasaki stands on only one vertical pillar or leg because the other was blown away by atomic blast that destroyed most of the city in 1945. The...more

I fail to see the need to make this a major tourist site! It survived the bomb, but that is all the good you can say about it. You will see far too many gates in Japan that are far superior to this one in...More

It’s a lasting reminder of the atomic bomb. I’m not sure of its exact distance from the hypocenter. Interesting to see but there isn’t anything else there.

Not much to see here, but an interesting survivor of the atomic bomb. We were nearby so we diverted to see it.

Not sure what can be said about it, easily found. Just beyond it, if you are coming up the steps, are a couple of benches and the remains of the other half of the pillar.

In that it is a place of reverence. Not really close to the other attractions, walk up, up, uphill and then a climb up the stairs. Kind of tucked out of the way. You'd never see it unless you chose to visit it.

It's interesting that it's there and it survived the bombing but it's just a Torii. You can do a lot of Nagasaki in a day and it's small enough to walk between most places. Use the readily available tourist maps and see this passing by...More

We walked the few blocks from the trolley station to see this. You can get a photo from the bottom of the many stairs or make the climb. I would call this a must see site but it is unique.

Youll see the photos in the museum so worth going to have a look at this monument now surrounded by the suburbs of Nagasaki.

This was close to my airbnb, so I ventured out to see this unique landmark. One thing I'm MOST impressed with, about Nagasaki, is their use of signage to point out various landmarks. In all my world travels, no city has been more informative than...More

This was my final stop before leaving Nagasaki. It was a fitting end to a day of sightseeing in this city of an awful past, but one that is strong and has its eyes on the future. It is not pretty...it's half a concrete torii...More
