Neighbourhood: Nishijin District
A district with a long textile heritage, ancient Kyoto is still alive in the Nishijin District. Studded with its weaving factories, tea houses, and onsen, the neighborhood is charming and peaceful with a self-possessed air. Less traveled than other parts of the city, it is a district where you can take it at your own pace. Visitors can explore the many weaving and cloth houses, the free kimono shows, and the many shops selling traditional clothing and goods. Showcasing architecture with sloping roofs and wooden reliefs dating to decades past, the streets in the Nishijin District transport you back in time, making them a joy to wander.

We went today and loved this market- one of the highlights I haven't seen mentioned were the several stalls where you can fill a plastic bag with kimonos/yukata/obi for 2000 yen - we managed to fit 5 pieces in (they don't seem to care if they are spilling out as long as they sort of fit). Great deal and huge selection. I saw several stalls doing this. I almost bought a kimono before this market and I'm so glad I didn't!
We also got all sorts of other things from tea to tools to tsuba. One trick is to use the calculator on your phone to ask for the price if you don't speak Japanese, some stalls will have their own so they can show you a price, for others can hand them your phone with the calculator loaded and they will type in a price. You can negotiate somewhat - try asking for a discount or showing another price on the calculator on your phone.
You could pop in for a quick look or a bite, but it is huge so if you really want to look for bargains plan to be there a while...it's addictive!

Plan your itinerary such that you will be able to visit the market on 25th of the month. Be early even if the weather is no good. We arrived around 9.30 am - stalls were up though there was a drizzle of rain.
Old toys, porcelain, glass and lacquer ware are worth buying. There is one stall selling life-sized insects carved out of wood. Though they are quite expensive (2,400 yen for a pair of dragonflies), I know I will not be able to find them anywhere else in Kyoto.
It is true you can get a kimono for 1,000 yen but these are mainly theatrical sort - more suited for costume parties, and do not come with the obi. I did not see any yukata (the cotton ones provided in ryokan/hotels).
There are many food stalls so you can basically have your lunch there but is no dedicated space with tables & chairs.

On 25th of each month there is an assortment of some antiques and handmade ceramics (overpriced for quality and appearance), to cheap pottery and fabrics, and some used kimonos (not very many with nice patterns though). We went because it was recommended, but it was very disappointing. Also sad to see a monkey dressed up doing tricks on display in the shrine area to get donations. Really felt only like a tourist trap compared to what it may have been in the past. Better quality and selection elsewhere for sure. If antiques is what you are after, then search for places that specialize. As for quick food, go to Nishiki Market. Although I have my review for that as well.
There are plenty of other beautiful temples to see instead, so I do not recommend it!

You will be greeted by dozens of food stands selling local food - most of the people are Japanese locals, so the prices are modest, and the food is authentic - and really good.
Thats a true flea market with hundreds of local elderly traders selling their treasures - some of them are authentic, unique masterpieces which you will not get anywhere else, and some (maybe a bigger "some") is plain trash.
If you enjoy this type of treasure hunt, thats a place for you. Remember that the market is only at 25th of each month. Its not only a morning market, as we were there at 12:00 and it was in full swing.

If you are the type of adventurous art/craft/cultural/antique seeker or you just want to get a sense of the "informal Japanese", go and visit every 25th of the month a huge market and lots of street food that I would encourage you to taste.

It was actually pouring down rain the day we went to this flea market but we still had a great time. There were tons of booths with lots of interesting and different things to purchase at a reasonable price. There were also lots of food booths.

This is a proper flee market with lots of junk to look through and the odd bargain to catch your eye.
Great fun to see all of the ‘antiques’ on sale and barter for a good price.

We love flea markets around the world. Always fun to explore things from the past. During our visit there were lots of people, crowded. We enjoyed the flea market at To-ji temple more.
