Neighbourhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The temple is called the Golden Pavilion as it has two floors covered with gold foil on lacquer. There's a tea house, the temple and some other buildings among the wooded, manicured area. An enjoyable place to visit.

This was an amazing site. The Gold Pavilion is absolutely gorgous. There is a Budda Hall which obviousley contains a Budda. It is Gold foil on lacquer on the upper two lefvels and a shining Phoenix stands on top of the shingled roof. You can go up to the top and see the Phoenix closer. There is lots of tourist but that because its well worth seeing.

The Golden pavilion and Rokuon-ji Temple are really very beautiful and it is too bad they are ruined by the mobs of tourists. The last time I visited was 15 years ago--in the rain--and it was a memorable experience. of course, there were no hoards of tourists. Last month, I returned. The sun was out and so were literally thousands of tourists josteling for space. With all the wonderful things to see in and around Kyoto, I will never return to the Golden Pavilion--except maybe during a typhoon.

The Golden Pavillion is a Buddhist hall containing relics of Buddha. You cannot go into the Pavillion.
The site originally a villa and owned by a statesman was acquired by a Shogun of the Muromachi period (14-16 Century) in 1397.
The surrounding gardens and buildings centered on the Golden Pavillion.
Gold foil on lacquer covers the upper two levels.

The Rokuon-Ji Golden Pavillion is one of the most impressive sites in Kyoto - a city full of beautiful attractions. The building is stunning and, yes, it is actually painted with real gold.

The Golden Pavilion was very beautiful but you may not visit the Pavilion only look at it at distance. The Garden and the surrounding nature was also very beautiful. We had a nice stroll around the garden and the ponds the only annoying thing was that it was very crowded.

Good to see the golden pavilion but way too crowded to really enjoy at all. Go early if you can.We were sandwiched with several hundred people around and it was unpleasant the whole walk through.

Rikuon-Ji Temple The Golden Pavilion was a good attraction to see and different from other temples although you do not get to go inside. The surrounding gardens were really lovely and an enjoyable stroll. The gardens are just as impressive as the temple so take your time to look around and let the crowds run ahead of you.
Interestingly the souvenir shops located near the exit were well priced so don't hesitate to purchase from here as you will struggle to find cheaper.

This is not an old building being rebuilt after it burnt down in the 50's. Still an impressive temple even on a bad weather day and a very popular attraction, overflowing with tourists, local and foreign.
I believe becoming a bit to commercial for it's own good/future.
